COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH July 29, 2012 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
BREAD OF LIFE SERIES - PART 1
Starting this weekend until Aug. 26, the Church presents in the Mass the Gospel of John chapter 6, or the Bread of Life Discourse. Since this is one of the biblical proofs and foundations of the Holy Eucharist, the Church divides the entire chapter of John 6 into five Sundays to look into the different aspects of the Bread of Life, the Holy Eucharist, the Source and Summit of our Catholic Faith. This weekends story about the multitude looking for Jesus to satisfy their need for healing and food and Christs multiplication of the bread and fish suggest many things about life and faith. First, this is a picture of basic human need for food, healing and security of provisions. This is true especially for the poor who have no wealth to provide for these needs and look at Jesus as the person who can provide them without cost. Secondly, the sharing of the loaves and fish from one of the crowd is a sign of human participation in Gods miraculous work. Sharing the loaf is also sharing the load of those who are in need. God uses human means to reveal his power and send his message. Thirdly, when God gives, He provides lavishly and freely. The God of heaven and earth has endless provisions for the worlds billions population. Fourthly, this is a foreshadowing that God will feed His people through Jesus Christ. He will provide not just answers to material and physical needs, but to all the deepest longings and desires of man. The Holy Mass is a gathering of people in worship, lifting up their concerns and petitions to God in faith and hope. Through the Mass, the people show their gratitude by offering the fruits of their labor and sharing them with the community, the Church. In return, God gives Himself to His people through the Body and Blood of His Son as the Bread that leads to eternal life.
