HEALTH CORNER
WHOPPING COUGH IS ON THE RISE
Recent articles in the paper have noted that Whopping Cough is on the rise in South Florida. Also known as pertussis, whopping cough is a contagious respiratory disease that spreads when those with the infection cough or sneeze near others. The symptoms of it are cold-like symptoms (mild cough, fever) which show up a week after being exposed, followed by severe coughing after one or two weeks with coughing followed by vomiting at its peak. The infection lasts about six weeks and can be treated with antibiotics. For kids, teenagers, adults and the elderly, pertussis can merely be a bad cough. However, the risk of contagion is still high because it lasts for about three months. Some people try to continue their day-to-day life at school or work without realizing theyre putting others at risk. In some extreme cases, whooping cough can lead to pneumonia, seizures, shock, even death. Children younger than 1 are the most vulnerable.
Caregivers of infants under 6 months are encouraged to get a booster vaccine to protect the infants they care for from acquiring the disease.

There is a resurgence of the disease, perhaps, because more and more parents are failing to have their children vaccinated. We have quite a few young ones in our congregation. We need our parents to be careful around others who are coughing and take extra care to insure that none of our wee ones get infected.
