Major components Most IR consists of an upright frame assembly that is driven by two powered feet. The feet move the unit along a drill floor mounted cog rail assembly. The motorized feet and cog rail allow the unit to traverse between the well center or Foxhole/mousehole and the HOME position. The upright frame assembly supports a moveable main carriage unit and a telescoping spinning wrench carriage.

The main carriage assembly holds the torque wrench. The torque wrench assembly consists of two gripping jaws, which are utilized for all drill string connection make-up and break-out torque requirements. The gripping jaws are capable of operating together for standard joint make/break operations and separately for drill string backup and bit make/break operations. The main carriage structure is equipped with an interface for a removable bit breaker carrier (BBC), which is capable of bit make/break torque.

The torque wrench consists of two upper and lower clamping jaws. A 9" (229 mm) hydraulic cylinder located at the back of each jaw provides sufficient clamping force to apply torque without distorting the box and pin or allowing the gripping dies to slip. Two hydraulic cylinders mounted to the sides of the torque wrench power the upper jaw torque rotation. Full stroke is 28. Bolted to each clamping jaw are gripping dies, which consist of easily removable special tong die and die retainer. Die retainers must be changed when the pipe size falls outside of the size range of

pressure rollers

The spinning wrench has four drive rollers: two pressure rollers and two clamping rollers.

clamping rollers

Spinning Wrench Assembly The Spinning Wrench spins tubulars from 3-1/2" to 9-3/4" in diameter without requiring adjustment. A "floating" mount design compensates for minor pipe misalignment. The spinner rotates 5" diameter pipe at up to 150 rpm and produces up to 2,000 ft lb (2,700 N-m) of rotational torque. The SSW-51 contains four drive rollers. Each roller is driven by its own direct drive hydraulic motor.

Hydraulic Torque Wrench

torque wrench Holding Clamp

The hydraulic torque wrench is an open throat design eliminating all gates and latches. The torque wrench can make and break connections for 3-1/2" drill pipe to 9-3/4" drill collars. It provides up to 100,000 ft lb of makeup torque and 120,000 ft lb of breakout torque.

Pipe Size The IR can spin in/spin out and make/break 3-1/2"OD to 9-3/4"OD tubulars on drill pipe, smooth drill collars and spiral drill collars. Through the innovative use of its variable-position SW it can also handle lifting subs, running subs, non-magnetic collars, casing scrapers, navigator tools, drilling motors, pup joints, crossovers, liner hangers, safety valves, drill bits (Tricone & PDC), stabilizers, hole openers, core barrels, drilling jars, and pre-made BHA assemblies. Variable clamp force

Minimizes under-torque completions on thin wall tubulars where box deformation causes excessive thread friction losses. Clamp force is set by the torque setting, preventing excess scarring and box distortion by increasing the clamp force as a function on the torque setting.

The die retainers and the tong dies are easily removable. The tong dies and die retainers must be changed when the pipe size falls outside of the size range of the die set in use.

Tool Electrical J-Box

The electrical control system includes electrically actuated solenoids.

The solenoids control hydraulic valves for operating the unit. The electrical control system also includes a manual control station.
An operator can perform makeup and breakout sequences with the tool one function at a time.

Service Loops Hydraulic and electrical services to the units are provided by a hanging service loop system mounted to the frame and hanger bracket structure mounted in the derrick. The service loops provide hydraulic and electrical service as the unit travels to/from well center. Derrick Interface Panel The derrick interface panel contains the hydraulic filter, hydraulic flow switch, hydraulic shut-off, and electrical J-boxes.
