Freshman Defensive Player of the Year - Leonard Williams, DE, USC: Williams, a freshman from Daytona Beach, Fla., has been a key contributor on a USC defense that has managed 3.58 sacks per game this season. He registered 7.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss during the regular season, ranking second on the team in both categories, and his 0.62 sacks per game rank ninth in the Pac-12. Williams is sixth on the team with 50 tackles (30 solo). He has an interception, which he returned 24 yards, two fumble recoveries and three pass breakups on the year. Coach of the Year - David Shaw, Stanford: Shaw, who was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second straight year, is the fourth coach in Pac-12 history to earn the award in consecutive seasons. He led the Cardinal to a 10-2 regular season record and a berth in the Pac-12 Championship. Stanford notched wins over ve ranked opponents in 2012 and has turned in three straight 10-win seasons for the rst time in program history. The Cardinal, which boasts the nations top rushing defense (71.33 yards per game), is tied for 11th in scoring defense (16.92 points per game), ranks 19th in total defense (328.75 yards per game) and leads the FBS in sacks (4.42 per game). Shaws defense has been particularly stringent on third-down, holding opponents to a 29.53 percent conversion rate on the year, a gure that ranks eighth in the FBS. Several of Shaws student athletes are in contention for national awards, including tight end Zach Ertz (Mackey Award nalist).
In addition to individual awards, the Pac-12 coaches selected the 2012 All-Pac-12 Football Team that follows.
NOTES ON THE 2012 ALL-PAC-12 FOOTBALL TEAM Selection Procedures: The All-Pac-12 Team is selected by the Pac-12 head football coaches. By School: OREGON and STANFORD placed the most players on the rst team with ve selections each, followed by OREGON STATE with four. By Class: Of the 26 rst-team selections, 14 are seniors, ve are juniors, six are sophomores and one freshman. Unanimous: Only one player was named on the rst-team ballot of all 12 head coaches--WR Marqise Lee of USC. Two-time Selections: Two players are repeat rst-team selections from last year--DT Star Lotulelei of Utah, LB Chase Thomas of Stanford. All-Academic: Two players were named to the rst team on both the All-Pac-12 Team and the Pac-12 All-Academic Football Team--P Jeff Locke of UCLA, OL Khaled Holmes, USC. In addition, OL Kevin Danser of Stanford, DL Ben Gardner of Stanford and Michael Clay of Oregon were named second-team All-Academic and second-team All-Pac-12.
