CLEAN RIVERS PROJECT- DRILLING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
DC Water is exploring short-, medium- and long-term measures to mitigate street
and basement flooding in the Bloomingdale neighborhood. Among the long-term
efforts we are pursuing is the Clean Rivers Project, a 13-mile system of tunnels and
diversion sewers throughout the city that will help mitigate flooding and reduce
combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to Rock Creek and the Anacostia and Potomac
rivers.

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel and the Branch Tunnels (NEBBT), like other
projects constructed under the Clean Rivers Project, will be designed to collect and
convey stormwater runoff for up to a 15-year rainfall event (approximately 3.7
inches in 6 hours). For storms greater than a 15-year event, the tunnel will
significantly mitigate flooding. And at the project's conclusion, District sewer
overflows to the Anacostia River will be reduced by 98 percent annually, creating
long-term environmental benefits for the entire city.

Construction on the NEBBT will start from Robert F. Kennedy Stadium and extend
toward McMillan Reservoir. In preparation for the project, scheduled to begin
during 2018 or sooner, there will be field investigation and survey work starting in
December 2012 to further assess the project site.
