Australian Pine

(Casuarina equisetifolia ) Beef wood

Description Australian pine can be found in tropical areas throughout the world. It is a large tree that can grow to heights of 150'. In the past, these trees were brought to Florida and planted to dry up swamps, create windbreaks, and for their fuel potential. Today, they are considered invasive due to their ability to drown out neighboring native plants with the amount of needles that build up beneath the tree. Uses The strong, heavy wood has been called the king of firewood. Tannins derived from the tree have been used for tanning leather as well as for preserving fishing lines. A bark extract has also been employed medicinally to treat diarrhea, colic, and sore throat. A paste of the seeds has been applied to ease a headache. In times of need, drinkable water can be purged from the tree.
