THE GREATNESS AND COMPASSION OF GOD

From the first reading and the gospel this weekend come two stories with the same message: the greatness and compassion of God. God is great all the time. He is supreme, all-knowing, all-present, all-powerful. He is Creator, Lord, King, Savior and Master. He is the source of all life. Yet this great God chose to be with his lowly creatures and showed compassion by becoming Man (Incarnation). By becoming man, he was subjected to human limitations and evils and experienced hunger, tiredness, threats, rejection and even death, thereby being able to show compassion because he was truly human except in committing sin. All the works of Jesus are acts of compassion: the raising of the dead, healing of the sick, the preaching about the kingdom of God, all the signs and wonders he performed are for the good and salvation of man. In the stories of raising the dead in the Word of God today, God shows that He truly embraces the human suffering in death and He remedied this situation through His Son Jesus Christ who came to conquer death and give life (John 10:10).
