 SYNOPSIS

Short synopsis
Sweden in the early 1900s was a time of social change, unrest, war and poverty.
Maria, a young, working-class woman, wins a camera in a lottery and her
decision to keep it changes her whole life. The camera enables Maria to see the
world through new eyes but it also becomes a threat to her nearly alcoholic
womanizer of a husband as it brings the charming photographer “Piff Paff Puff”
into her life.

Long synopsis
In the early 1900s, Maria, a young working-class woman, wins a camera in a
lottery. Her first impulse is to sell it for grocery money but instead decides to
keep it, changing her whole life. Maria is married to Sigfrid Larsson, an unskilled
laborer, hard worker, lothario and periodic alcoholic. Already a mother, she will
eventually have seven children.

In an attempt to sell the camera, Maria seeks out photographer Sebastian

Pedersen, also known as “Piff Paff Puff," who persuades Maria to try the camera
at least once before selling it. Pedersen teaches her the fine art of photography
and Maria sees the world through new eyes while “Piff Paff Puff” sees Maria as
the beautiful, talented woman she is.

Maria and her family are weighed down with poverty and hard work. But in the
evenings while Sigfrid sleeps off drunkenness and the children are tucked into
bed-sofas and pulled-out drawers, Maria develops her pictures in the kitchen.
Neighbors, potted plants, the children in the yard, the cat all become vibrant and
immortalized in her photographs. Maria’s pictures begin narrate the reality in
which she lives. She documents poverty, change, the joys of life and the
outbreak of war, as well as a whole society undergoing transformation.

Her photography and her relationship to "Piff Paff Puff" open a possible path of
freedom and independence to Maria while also posing a challenge and threat to

Sigfrid. Still, the camera and "Piff Paff Puff" give Maria new strength and arouse a
longing in her Sigfrid can not stop. Violent arguments threaten to split the family
but also present opportunities for the family to grow stronger and develop.

EVERLASTING MOMENTS is an account of the great and fascinating fate of a

woman in the first decade of the Twentieth Century: a time on the verge of being
shaken into massive change. It is a chronicle of people with an impressive
capacity to survive through the infinite gift of invention and problem solving
without bitterness and the ability to enjoy everyday of life.

 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

“Every film is my last," Ingmar Bergman once wrote in his 40s. A good work
ethic, I think, because at almost twice that age, these words have assumed even
greater relevance for me. At my age, a person must choose very carefully how to
spend the last vestiges of his time and energy as an active filmmaker. His hand
must be turned to something quite extraordinary.

EVERLASTING MOMENTS is the result of an involvement that began as far

back as 1986 when my wife, Agneta, met Maja, eldest daughter of Maria, the
film’s central character. Maria was a poverty-stricken, working-class woman with
seven children who won a camera in a lottery and there after photographed the
life of her family and the life around her, through the rest of her life. Agneta
realized this could become a marvelous book and she interviewed Maja up to her
death at the ripe old age of 92.

I, too, realized this was unique material about life in Sweden at the turn of the
20th century. The description of the importance of photography really gripped
me, as I have been a devotee of still photography since the tender age of 14.
The fantastic Fellini-like gallery of characters also fascinated me, so did the
social perspective.

When I grew up in Limhamn it was still a working-class suburb on the outskirts of

Malmö, and even though my father was a dentist and I hailed from a different
social class than that of my playmates and therefore had an outsider’s
perspective, I have no problem recognizing the people and the milieu in which
the story takes place (even though the actual events took place in Gothenburg).

It was for many years a dream for me to make a film that takes place in precisely
such an environment as this, a film story that affords me the opportunity of
drawing on my own childhood feelings and memories.

CREW BIOGRAPHIES

Jan Troell (DIRECTOR/WRITER)

Jan Troell is without question one of the most important Scandinavian

filmmakers. The Swedish director is famous for his understated rhythms and for
writing, directing, editing, and shooting his own films. A former schoolteacher,
Troell made short films and worked as a cameraman for Bo Widerberg before
making his feature debut with the coming-of-age story HERE’S YOUR LIFE (1966).
After WHO SAW HIM DIE? (1968), he made his best-known works, THE
EMIGRANTS (1971), which earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Director,
and Screenplay, and its sequel, THE NEW LAND (1972), which presented a
sweeping account of Swedish immigrants coming to America in the 1840s and
was based on Vilhelm Moberg's novel Unto a Good Land. The films were hailed
collectively as the Swedish equivalent of GONE WITH THE WIND and were
notable for Troell's direct and humane treatment of his characters' plight. After a
couple of American film assignments, Troell returned to Scandinavia with THE
FLIGHT OF THE EAGLE (1982), and to Swedish history with A FROZEN DREAM,
the story of the failed 1897 North Pole expedition undertaken by S. A. Andree.
Since then, Troell has made SAGOLANDET (1986), IL CAPITANO (1991, won the
Silver Bear in Berlin in 1992), AS WHITE AS IN SNOW (2001) and the best
example of a true Scandinavian co-production becoming a hit in all its local
territories, the acclaimed HAMSUN (1996).
