CHRISTIAN BOASTING AND REJOICING
In our ordinary life, we feel proud and happy of the many good things we have: our intelligence, skills, talents, wealth, accomplishments, good looks, popularity and good name. Sometimes, feeling proud and boasting are perceived to be synonymous. This is a basic human tendency which may not be bad at all if done in the proper way. In the first reading today, Isaiah rejoices over the blessings of Yahweh to Jerusalem. In the second reading, Paul expresses his reason for boasting and rejoicing, but not in the way mentioned above. Though he has every reason to boast of his missionary and evangelical accomplishments, he boasts not for worldly reasons but for the honor of sharing the suffering and cross of Jesus Christ. His reason for boasting and rejoicing is the cross of Christ that brought him salvation and made him a new creation. The same theme is in the gospel today. The seventytwo disciples were sent by Jesus on a missionary work. Because of the power given by Christ, the disciples were able to subject the powers of darkness to their command, so they have a reason to boast and rejoice as they report back to Jesus their accomplishments. Jesus, while not ignoring the disciples good feelings about their missionary accomplishments, reminded them of the more important thing to consider, Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. Indeed, in life we have many reasons to boast and rejoice. But self-centered and egoistic boasting and rejoicing are considered negative values which are not compatible with Christian virtues. More than any perishable and temporary wealth, or any accomplishment we achieve in this life, Jesus wants us to focus on the thing that lasts forever, as He reminds us also, Rejoice because your names are written in Heaven. And this will make us rejoice with God forever.

Thank You!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parishioners for their hospitality during my mission appeal. (June 8-9) Several were very helpful in directing me to where to find the visiting priests, etc. You have a beautiful parish. The guest priests were very friendly and helpful, too. God bless, Janice England
