ERC Realigns Top Jobs;
Karish Becomes Chief Financial Officer;
Bennett Moves to Development Office

ERC International Inc. last week realigned the duties of two top executives to consolidate the
company's financial functions and create a corporate development office.
David A. Karish was promoted to chief financial officer and treasurer of the Vienna company,
succeeding Thomas Bennett, who moved to the newly formed corporate development office.
Karish and Bennett both joined the company in 1983.
The corporate development office will handle the company's long-term strategic planning, said
ERC Chairman Jack Aalseth.
"The appointments will consolidate the finance and administrative functions of the company,"
Aalseth said, "and, will enable us to have a more formalized capability in the areas of acquisition
and start-up companies."
Bennett, who remains a vice president, will focus on analyzing long-term company strategies and
potential acquisitions, Aalseth said.
Karish, the former vice president of finance and administration for operations who came to the
company from BDM Corp., will take charge of financial functions including banking, cash
management, tax planning and auditing. He also will oversee the financial operations of the
company's four business groups.
ERC, which has acquired companies at a steady pace since its inception in 1976, looks to acquire
companies that "fit" its scheme of services, Karish said.
ERC International, which divides its business between the private and public sectors, operates
four business groups in the areas of defense, energy and environment, computer systems and
logistics and facilities management.
Karish said the company usually incorporates subsidiaries into existing business groups. But,
when the acquisition of Appalachian Computer Services Inc. of Kentucky is formalized there will
be a fifth business group, Karish added. ERC signed a letter of intent in July to acquire
Appalachian.
Aalseth also said ERC invested "a substantial amount" in a $ 25 million venture capital group
that will work to develop technology and software for the defense industry. Aalseth, who called
the capital venture group ERC's "window to technology," said that under the agreement, ERC
will have the opportunity to work with selected start-up companies. Eventually, the companies
may choose to go public or be acquired, Aalseth added.
AUTOMOTIVE
Mid-Atlantic Toyota Distributors Inc. of Glenn Burnie last week named J.P. Brown president,
chief executive officer and general manager. The company, which reports annual sales of $ 1.1
billion, distributes Toyota vehicles to five mid-Atlantic states including Maryland, Virginia and
the District. Brown also will assume responsibility for the company's subsidiaries, which include
Crown Port Services Inc., Global Computer Services Ltd. and Atlantic International Insurance Co.
Ltd. William W. Bivens was promoted to executive vice president and assistant general manager
of the company. He had served as senior vice president.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
Century National Bank of the District elected Gene E. Godley as a member of its board of
directors. Godley, a partner of the law firm Bracewell and Patterson, had served as assistant
secretary of the Department of Treasury for legislative affairs.
Standard Federal Savings and Loan Association of Gaithersburg named former executive vice
president James A. Steele III president and chief executive officer, succeeding Marvin R. Lang,
who moved to vice chairman of the board. Steele had served as president of the association's
subsidiary, Century Mortgage Co. Inc.
Continental Federal Savings Bank of Fairfax hired local banking executives Dan W. Jeff as vice
president and marketing director and Vivian McGaw as vice president and director of personnel.
Jeff left a position as vice president and marketing officer for First American Bank of Washington
and McGaw had served as a manager at Government Employees Insurance Co.
Golembe Associates Inc., a financial consulting firm, formed a senior adviser group comprised of
James E. Brown, former president of Mercantile Bancorporation; Llewellyn Jenkins, former vice
chairman of Manufacturers Hanover Corp.; and William H. Kennedy Jr., former chairman and
chief executive officer of First National Bank & Trust of Arkansas. The advisory group will advise
the company on "products and services for the banking industry."
GOVERNMENT
Former associate editor of U.S. News & World Report Patricia Avery joined the Commission on
the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution as press representative.
The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry named Charles E. Harrigan to the newly created
position of assistant commissioner of the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Program.
Harrigan has served as interim director of the department since November of 1985.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Figgie International Holdings Inc. elected C. B. Robertson III and A.A. Sommer Jr. to its board
of directors, replacing John N. Dalton and Paul F. Hellmuth, who recently died. Robertson is
president of the Richmond real estate firm CBR Associates Inc. Sommer serves on the executive
committee of the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and on the boards of Consolidated Natural
Gas Corp. and Gould Inc. in Pittsburgh.
NONPROFIT
The D.C. Preservation League, which was formed in 1971 to save the Old Post Office and the
Willard Hotel, named Vicki A. Sherman, Patricia D. Wilson and Michael C. Quinn to its board of
directors. Each works in the District and has historic preservation background.
A. Hensel Fink, a former dean of architecture at Drexel Institute, joined the Annapolis
architectural and consulting firm of Lee-Warner & Associates as a partner and design consultant.
Mantech Advanced Systems International Inc., a professional services company in McLean,
promoted Gary B. Glisan, Charles E. Hayes and John C. P. McEachen to vice presidents of the
company.
Helen Robins, the former president of TAG International Inc., which is based in California, joined
the local consulting firm, Robert R. Nathan Associates Inc., as a principal associate in the
telecommunications practice.
Leon A. Farley Associates, a local executive-search firm, named Zbigniew T. Rurak a partner.
Pagan International, a public policy development group, selected Ronald A. Duchin as senior vice
president for issue management and strategy.
