About the Northeast Boundary Tunnel

DC Water is preparing an Environmental Assessment to evaluate potential environmental impacts of the proposed Northeast Boundary Tunnel project. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a component of the Anacostia River Projects. This is the portion of the DC Clean Rivers Project designed to: Provide long-term relief from flood events and sewer backups in northeast DC Control combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to reduce nutrient discharges to the Anacostia River. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel would be approximately 5 miles long, 23 feet in diameter, and located between 40 and160 feet below ground. Along the tunnel, diversion sewers and drop shafts would be constructed near existing sewers to divert CSOs to the tunnel when system capacity is exceeded. CSOs captured by the Northeast Boundary Tunnel would be conveyed to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. For more information about the meeting or for individuals requiring special or by email at dccleanrivers@dcwater.com.
