SACRAMENTO — California’shealth insurance exchange led thenation in enrollments during itsinaugural month of operation, butthe 35,000 tentative sign-upsannounced Wednesday represented just a fraction of the eventualgoal.The first enrollment numbers tobe released under the federal healthoverhaul also raised as many ques-tions as they answered.Covered California, the agencysteering the health overhaul in thestate, aims to sign-up as many as2.2 million people by the end of next year, either in private insur-ance coverage or Medicaid servic-es for the needy. More than 100 volunteers deco-rated giant garland prototypesyesterday in the Filoli visitorscenter, one of the initial stepsleading into Holiday Traditions,Filoli’s largest fundraiser of theyear.Filoli in Woodside, the historicsite of the National Trust forHistoric Preservation and one of the finest remaining countryestates of the early 20th century,begins its holiday festivities Nov.29, the day after Thanksgiving.Its holiday events run for ninedays. The opening night premiershopping event includes livemusic, wine and appetizers. “It’s absolutely beautiful andmagical,” said event co-chairJackie Hasenstab, who also doesfloral design for the visitors cen-ter. The first floor of the house,along with the visitors center, aretransformed for the holidays bymore than 700 volunteers withdecorations, festive music and aholiday boutique. Decorationsthemselves go on sale, along withornaments and custom wreathes.Each room has a unique theme,including the dining room, whichlooks like a farmersmarket.

After updated Election Dayresults showed Russ Cohen as thewinner of the third and final sloton the Burlingame City Council,the final results have flipped againto show Ricardo Ortiz over Cohenby eight votes.The San Mateo CountyElections Office released updatednumbers from the Nov. 5 election4:30 p.m. yesterday.Ortiz formerly had 15.6 percentwith 1,644 votes and Cohen took15.5 percent with 1,634 votes,respectively. The vote then flippedwhen numbers were reportedFriday and Cohen led by 17 votes.Tuesday, the count revealed thevote difference had narrowed, withCohen still on top. Cohen took1,995 and Ortiz took 1,992 votes,according to Tuesday’s count.Now, according to the final count,Ortiz has 2,048 votes, while

Woman discusses forced exorcism allegations
STOCKTON — ACalifornia womanwhose husband and son are accused of kidnapping her to perform an exorcismsays they made her drink oil and toldher she had three devils inside her. Forty-one-year-old Blanca Fariastold News10 in Sacramento she washeld down in the backseat of a pickuptruck Saturday after being picked up inStockton.Her husband, 42-year-old JoseMagana-Farias, and son, 20-year-oldVictor Farias, are scheduled to appearin court Wednesday. It was not immedi-ately clear whether they had attorneys. Blanca Farias said she was taken to achurch, where the father and son and apastor bathed her in oil that they madeher drink.She said the pastor told her she waspossessed as she threw up. The pastoris not expected to face charges. She said she was able to text herboyfriend, and authorities were wait-ing when she returned home.
Council candidate loses support due to rap video
SAN BERNARDINO — ASanBernardino city council candidate isdrawing some flak after music videoshe recorded have turned up that criticssay promote violence and crime.The San Bernardino Police OfficersAssociation recently pulled itsendorsement of Anthony Jones who isin a runoff election for a council seat.The organization said it received themusic videos in which some of thelyrics focus on violence and a gunshotsound effect is heard.The 23-year-old Jones doesn’t regretmaking the videos, one of which wasrecorded two years ago. He said hewouldn’t make similar videos nowbecause he’s involved in local politicsand didn’t appear too worried aboutlosing an endorsement.Jones said he had been open abouthis past in the music business and thevideo had been made in collaborationwith others.
Bones of at least two people found in desert graves
VICTORVILLE — Authorities say thebones of at least two people have beenfound at what appear to be shallowgraves in Southern California’sMojave Desert.The San Bernardino County Sheriff’sDepartment says a motorcyclistreported finding skeletal remains onMonday near Victorville. Coroner’sofficials confirmed they’re human.Sheriff’s investigators returnedto the area Tuesday and Wednesdayand dug up what appeared to be ashallow grave. Authorities say theyfound the remains of more than oneperson but it’s unclear how many,nor their age or gender. Investigators say the remains appearto have been there for quite some time.The Daily Press of Victorville saystwo and possibly three shallow gravesare in the area near the Interstate 15freeway. Victorville is about 60 miles north-east of Los Angeles.

ELIZABETH, N.J. Aman whogained Internet fame as “Kai theHatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker” hasbeen indicted on murder charges inconnection with the beating death of an elderly New Jersey man.Union County prosecutors say 25-year-old Caleb McGillvary could face alife sentence if he’s convicted. Theindictment was handed up Wednesdayby a county grand jury.McGillvary is accused of killing 74-year-old lawyer Joseph Galfy, whosebody was found May 13 in his Clarkhome. Authorities say McGillvary andGalfy met in New York City andMcGillvary stayed at Galfy’s home.McGillvary was arrested inPhiladelphia several days after Galfy’sbody was found.The Canadian gained a measure of online fame in February after interven-ing in an attack on a California utilityworker in which he described using ahatchet to fend off a further attack.

Golden Gate Bridge officials eyeing toll hike
Drivers are expected to soon pay more tocross the Golden Gate Bridge.The bridge’s directors are set to considerseveral options to raise tolls at a meetingon Friday.They include a 75-cent increase to $5.75in April for drivers who use the FasTrakelectronic payment system and then anoth-er increase to $6 in July 2016. Drivers whodon’t use FasTrak would see their tollsincrease from $6 to $7 in April.Another option would increase tolls fornon-FasTrak drivers to $8 starting in July2016.The bridge district is facing a projected$142 million shortfall over the next sever-al years. Avote on any toll increase is not expect-ed until early next year.
Foster City Pedway to reopen
The grand reopening of the Foster CityLevee Pedway will commence with a ribbon-cutting ceremony 1:45 p.m. Nov. 20. The eight-mile pedway has a newsmoother surface and is wider. The cityundertook a comprehensive plan to recon-struct, repair and repave the levee pedway in2010. It is accessible from the corner of Port Royal Avenue and Cumberland Court.
