Gridiron Australia - 2014 AGL & WAGL
Gridiron Australia - 2014 AGL & WAGL
to announce the Australian Gridiron League (AGL) for 2014 will include full equipment women teams for the first time, along with the addition of the South Australian & Australian Capital Territory mens team in the male competition. The series will be played out over a six week period from March to May, and with another historic first for the sport, coverage of the series to be broadcast live via Ascension Sports. We have kicked a few goals this year as a sport, and to have the three womens teams competing for the national title for the first time in full equipment shows how well those competitions taken off, says Gridiron Australia spokesman Matt Steel. The level of competition is expected to be the best we have had for the men too, so we are really looking forward to seeing both competitions get started. With the series being broadcast live, it could prove to be a recruiting gold mine for USA Colleges who now have over 40 Australians on their rosters throughout America. Most Australians heading to the US College system have traditionally been AFL converts in the Punting position, but we are seeing more and more recruited for other positions on the field with converts from other sports such as Rugby League, noted Steel. Australians getting these opportunities just shows how much the sport is starting to take off and the quality of the coaching that now exists in Australia. In other Gridiron news, the newly appointed Executive Director of IFAF (International Federation of American Football) is Australian Michael Ryan. Ryan was the former Chairman of Gridiron Australia, and he will be given the task of overseeing the development of the sport in over 60 countries around the globe.
