Stewardship Spotlight
STEWARDSHIP OF THE BODY
We do not see God, yet we come to know Him because He revealed and continues to reveal Himself in and through the physical world. The visible world, including our bodies, manifests the invisible God so that we may understand even in a limited sense the immense beauty of the Supreme Being. The mystery of God becoming man in Jesus Christ, or Incarnation, raised up the value of human dignity to the level of the divine. God became Man so that man may become like God. Mans dignity comes from these biblical truths: 1. Image of Godfrom the time of creation of the first man and woman, God already imprinted the value and dignity of the human body as the reflection of Gods image. 2. Redeemed by Christthe imperfection of man due to sin was redeemed by Christ when He assumed mans sinful nature in his death and raised it up in His resurrection. He introduced God as Our Father and we are His children. 3. Temple of the Spirittodays second reading reminds us that we are not the absolute owner of our lives. Our body is the dwelling place of God through His Spirit. 4. Holiness of the Bodythough we come from dust and unto dust we will return, God calls us to holiness precisely through our physical bodies, by honoring the divine in us and using this body to accomplish the will of God. Therefore, we must treat our bodies the way God wants them to be treated so as to glorify Him in our bodies. God demands that we take care of our bodies and those of others. We do this through proper nutrition, sleep and rest, avoiding abuses such as overeating, using prohibited drugs, inflicting unnecessary pain and committing suicide and avoiding sexual immorality. We also need to respect the life of others by not committing murder and abortion and by helping those in need, because our bodies and theirs truly belong to God.
