It’s campy, it’s macabre and it’s justplain fun. These are just some of theways to describe “Little Shop of Horrors,” the 1982 rock musical pre-sented by Foothill Music Theatre. Based on the 1960 cult film by RogerCorman, the show is set in a run-downfloral shop on Skid Row in the early’60s. The place is owned by Mr.Mushnik (Alex Perez), who has twoemployees. One is the nerdy but endearingSeymour (Adam Cotugno). The other isthe sexy Audrey (Adrienne Walters),whose self-esteem is so low that she’swilling to put up with the abuse by hersadistic boyfriend, dentist OrinScrivello (Jeff Clarke). The shop’s fortunes improve whenSeymour brings in a strange plant.Named Audrey II (voiced by JamesDevreaux Lewis), it comes to demandunusual nourishment before growingever larger. Soon Seymour becomesfamous, but he also must confront amoral dilemma. Serving as a kind of Greek chorus arethree street-wise young women,Crystal (Lyn Mehe’ula), Chiffon(Melissa Baxter) and Ronette (MeganCoomans). The two-act show is full of bouncytunes by Alan Menken with cleverlyrics by Howard Ashman, who alsowrote the book. One of the more amusing songs, especially for those who recognize thereferences, is Audrey’s “SomewhereThat’s Green.” In it, she expresses herdream of marrying Seymour and mov-ing to a nice place like Levittown, where their children can watch “HowdyDoody” on their big-screen, 12-inchTV.
