Canberra’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme
Consultation closes on 28 February 2010
The ACT Government has recently launched a major discussion paper in the
energy sector – the proposal to expand the electricity Feed-In Tariff Scheme.
The Feed-In Tariff discussion paper deals with a possible expansion to
include installations beyond the existing capacity limit of 30kW. Among the
issues outlined in the paper are how an expanded tariff would help reduce
the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions, its effect on the creation of jobs in the
clean economy and how it would impact electricity bills.
We welcome community views on this important topic that will shape
Canberra’s energy sector future.
Consultation on the proposal to extend the Feed-in Tariff Scheme closes on
28 February 2010. Copies of the discussion paper are available to download
from www.environment.act.gov.au/energy or for more information

Public information sessions – Wright and
Coombs, Molonglo Valley
The Land Development Agency (LDA) has engaged Cardno Young to
undertake the planning, design and documentation of the Wright and
Coombs residential estates in Molonglo Valley.
The LDA is also preparing a Riparian Management Strategy to conserve
and rehabilitate aquatic and riparian ecosystems adjacent to the suburbs of
Coombs and North Weston, while enhancing recreational opportunities and
improving amenity for residents and visitors.
The LDA invites the public to view the draft Estate Development Plan (EDP)
for Wright and Coombs, and provide feedback with regard to the Riparian
Management Strategy via two public information sessions to be held at St
Peter’s Anglican Church, corner of Parkinson St and Watling Place, Weston
ACT.

Pregnancy and H1N1 Influenza
Pregnant women have an increased risk of complications from H1N1
influenza because their immune system is naturally suppressed during
pregnancy and their expanded size can make breathing more difficult.
Although pregnant women are not more at risk of catching influenza than
the general population, the disease may progress quickly in pregnant
women, and be complicated by bacterial infections, such as pneumonia. This
is particularly relevant to women in their second and third trimester.
Pregnant women have been identified as a priority group for H1N1 influenza
and seasonal influenza vaccination. Both vaccines are free for pregnant
women.
To protect yourself if you are pregnant:
• get vaccinated against H1N1 as soon as possible;
• wash your hands regularly with soap and water. Alcohol-based hands
cleaners are also effective;
• cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze;
• avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
• avoid people who are coughing or sneezing; and
• seek medical advice early if you develop flu-like symptoms.

European wasp notice
Canberrans are reminded to keep an eye out for early signs of European
wasp nests in and around their home. Already this year, several people have
found European wasps in their home as a result of nests established in the
wall cavity and roof spaces.
If you locate a nest in your property a qualified pest control operator should
be engaged to treat it. Attempting to treat the nest yourself puts you at risk
of being stung.

Proposed temporary parking arrangements at
Canberra Hospital
To allow construction to begin on the new Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient
Unit at Canberra Hospital temporary parking arrangements will be in place from
mid 2010 until the end of 2010.
The proposed temporary arrangements involve hospital staff parking in
residential streets surrounding the hospital campus. Visitors and patients will
continue to park in areas closest to main hospital buildings.
ACT Health is seeking feedback primarily from local residents in Garran and east
Phillip directly affected by the proposed on-street parking arrangements. An
informal drop-in information session is being held at Canberra Hospital between
6.15pm and 8.30pm on Thursday 25 February 2010.

Maintaining safe nature strips
Canberrans are reminded to maintain private gardens and nature strips adjacent
to public footpaths and walkways to prevent potential accidents.
Grass should be kept short and foliage pruned to not cause a line of sight
problem for vehicles or pedestrians using an intersection, driveway or footpath.
Elderly residents and people with disabilities or mobility issues who are unable to
maintain their nature strip may be eligible for assistance from Home Help Service
ACT by calling 02 6287 3777.

not have access to the same health and safety services or work conditions as
