SACRAMENTO — The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association today announced that its political arm
is endorsing Meg for Governor.

"This is someone who knows how to balance a budget, knows the competitive pressure of the free
enterprise system and can bring those thoughts and ideas to the governor's office,” Association
President Jon Coupal said. “For those reasons, we're very proud to endorse Meg Whitman for
governor and think she'll be great at getting California back on track."

He added, "Meg is the taxpayers' friend and will fight for working families. The status quo, she
understands more than anybody else, is unacceptable.”

The association is the state’s largest grassroots taxpayer organization with more than 200,000
members. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association was founded in 1978 by Howard and Estelle
Jarvis, following the historic Proposition 13 “voter revolt,” and it has been championing taxpayer
rights for more than three decades.

“There is no organization that better understands the relationship between low taxes and individual
prosperity than the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association,” Whitman said. “I look forward to
working with Jon Coupal and the association to protect taxpayers. I am honored to accept their
endorsement.”

He called Whitman the strongest candidate to “take out the opponent who we think is going to be
coming from the other side, who will be part of the old guard mentality of pro-government and
more taxes. It's clear right now that Meg is the most credible candidate….Meg is well-positioned to
reach out to not just Republicans but Democrats as well who are fed up with the dysfunctional
nature of California government."

The taxpayer association has been the undisputed leader in the fight against attempts over the
years to weaken Prop. 13 and pass multibillion-dollar tax increases pushed by Sacramento leaders.
The association was a vocal opponent of last May’s Prop. 1A, helping to defeat the measure and
protecting taxpayers from $16 billion in new taxes. Meg also opposed the measure.

Coupal said he believes Meg is the only candidate, Republican or Democrat, whom Howard Jarvis
himself would trust to protect Prop. 13.

“Unlike other candidates, she has never advocated a policy that would weaken Prop. 13”, he said.
“When we're looking for some candidates who we have the highest level of confidence in protecting
Prop. 13, it really came down to one choice and that was Meg Whitman."
