Preliminary Task Evaluation;

1- I think that the majority of our film uses continuity well, for example, the dialogue between the
two characters made sure that everything was in the same place as it had been before.
However, at the very start of the film, the first shot shows the male character sat at a table
talking, and in the next he is stood in the corner of the screen. This is because we filmed the
female character walking into the room first, and then we filmed the establishing shot,
forgetting about placements. This will need to be improved in our next assignment.
2- We set up our three cameras so that we could effectively make use of match on action and shot
reverse shot. We used shot reverse shot during the dialogue between the characters, and this
was effective because we could switch between their faces and show emotions. The 180-degree
rule was also good because it means you have a clearer perspective of the scene and you can
see both characters at all times. The match on action would work well in a scene where
someone was seen entering a door from one side and then shutting it from the other, because
you would need to make sure that if they opened the door with one hand, when you cut to the
next shot, the same hand was on it.
3- I think that our group worked well together although we did have to split into two groups for
the editing process due to being such a large group. During the filming, we took turns using the
camera and helped each other with camera placement and giving advice. In the editing, we had
to help each other get to grips with the software, and because no one person had an advantage
of knowing how to use it, we worked well together.
4- If we filmed this piece again, I would definitely concentrate more on the continuity aspect,
because it was very obvious and noticeable where we hadn’t paid it much attention. I would also
make sure that there were more takes of each shot, to ensure you had the footage you needed
for each shot. I think that overall, the piece was good for a first attempt but we will need to be a
lot more polished and consistent in work from now on.
5- We planned our video fairly well, although we filmed all the parts out of order, which probably
made it slightly more difficult for us. However, we did make sure that all aspects of the script
were covered and we had in mind how we wanted each part set out. We made a brief
storyboard before we started filming, outlining where we would use each technique and why.
However, if we had planned it all better, we would have made sure that we kept an air of
continuity throughout the piece.
6- We used a few transitions in the piece, fading one scene into another, we used these between
the establishing shot and where the female character walks into the room, and then again
between a mid shot of the two characters going into a close up of the male. I think that these
looked effective because it meant that the editing and cutting of the shots wasn’t as obvious.
7- During this task, I think that I learnt the basics of using the editing software. I learnt how to
import the media that I needed and how to cut and mix the footage. We also made use of
transitions and titles and credits. When we added audio to the video, we had to customize the
volume of each part, making the background music quieter in some parts so that the dialogue
could be heard over it. During the actual construction of the film, we had to learn how to use
the video cameras, not only to film with but how to swap the memory card over and how to use
the card readers needed to transfer files to the computer.
