PEER REVIEW

I have the utmost respect for peer reviewed publications because of the very peer
review process and because neither the authors nor the reviewers are compensated. Thus,
it is not about making money; it is about doing it correctly so we all can benefit from the
findings. After speaking with you and Professor Fiddler, I know that you both agree with
me that the integrity of the peer review process needs to be protected and that that process
begins with the researcher in the laboratory.

I feel strongly that coauthors, including academic advisors, should be able to defend
their work. Major publications, such as The New England Journal of Medicine, now insist
that all coauthors contribute significantly to the research and writing that compose their
work. The editors of this journal in particular became extremely vocal about this issue in
the 1980s after discovering scientific misconduct by John Darsee. M.D. Dr. Darsee
engaged in scientific fraud and included his colleagues as coauthors without their
knowledge. The result was that various journals had to retract Dr. Darsee's multiple
publications. See Miller OJ, Hersen, M: Research Fraud in the Behavorial and Biomedical
Sciences, John Wiley & Sons, 1992. My point is this: Can you and Professor Fiddler trust
the integrity of VOSTs work given that both of you are his advisors, not coauthors, and thus
are not integrally involved in his research and writing?
