IMPORTANT WEEKEND WORK NOTICE

Roosevelt Island Aerial Tramway Modernization


Requires Lane Closures
June/July 2010

Starting the weekend of June 12 /13 2010, and continuing on the weekends through June and July (exception of July

3 /4 ) the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation will be removing and installing structural steel for the tram tower

located at East 60 Street between the Queensboro Bridge Approach Roadway and 1 Avenue. In order to perform this
work, the lane closures, ramp closures and detours as noted below will be in effect during these weekends.
Traffic Enforcement Agents will be stationed at critical intersections to maintain a smooth flow of traffic and Variable
Message Signs will be placed along major highways and local streets to alert motorists of the lane closures. PLEASE
NOTE: During these weekends, parking restrictions will be in place on critical corridors to ensure proper traffic flow in the
immediate vicinity of the work. Additionally, information will be disseminated to the media alerting motorists of the lane
closures and to encourage use of alternate routes.

TRAFFIC IM PACTS
Queensboro Bridge
• Queensboro Bridge North Upper Roadway carrying westbound/inbound traffic will need to be closed from 5:00 AM to
2:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. To accommodate peak westbound/inbound traffic flow during these hours, the South Upper
Roadway will be reversed for passenger cars only proceeding into Manhattan. The Lower north Inner Roadway will
continue to accommodate all vehicle types to Manhattan.

• North Outer Roadway: Pedestrian/bicycle path will continue to operate with the same entry/exit points in Queens.

Pedestrians exiting/entering from the Manhattan side will be routed to the north sidewalk of East 60 Street between the

Queensboro Bridge Approach Roadway and 1 Avenue. Bicycle access will change and be routed along the Queensboro

Bridge Approach Roadway between East 60 Street and East 61 Street, onto East 61 Street to 1 Avenue.

• From 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM Saturday and Sunday Manhattan traffic proceeding eastbound/outbound to Queens will be

restricted to the Lower South Inner and Outer (cars only) Roadways with access for all vehicle types from East 59 Street

and 2 Avenue, or cars only via the 1 Avenue at East 59 Street entrance.

• East 60 Street between Queensboro Bridge Approach Roadway and 1 Avenue: This roadway will be fully closed
from 10:00 PM Friday to 5:00 AM Monday.

• East 61 Street between Queensboro Bridge Approach Roadway and 1 Avenue: This roadway will be reversed from

westbound traffic flow to eastbound traffic flow to accommodate the Queensboro Bridge Lower Roadway exit. East 61

Street westbound traffic will be detoured onto northbound 1 Avenue to use either East 63 Street or East 66 Street to

continue westbound. Motorists who normally use the FDR Drive north 61 Street/Queensboro Bridge exit destined for the
Queensboro Bridge should take York Avenue southbound and follow the posted detour to the Queensboro Bridge.

• 2 Avenue between East 62 Street and East 59 Street: Motorists proceeding onto the Queensboro Bridge to Queens
will have two (2) designated exclusive channelized lanes along the left side of the roadway for access to the Lower
Roadway of the Bridge. Through traffic should keep right utilizing the through lanes.

WEATHER IMPACTS
In the event of extreme weather conditions during any of these weekends, the work will be rescheduled.
