Domestic dispute turns deadly

Man shoots himself, struck once by police outside Redwood City office complex

A series of escalating domestic violence
incidents turned deadly outside a Redwood
City office complex Tuesday when a man
allegedly shot himself after police respond-
ed to a report of him chasing his ex-wife
with a gun.
The 43-year-old man, whose name was
not yet being released, was shot once in the
chest by a responding officer before he
reportedly shot himself in the head, accord-
ing to police and the District Attorneys
Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Redwood City police said they had previ-
ously seized multiple weapons registered to
the suspect, who had an active restraining
order against him. The District Attorneys
Office took over the investigation into the
officer-involved shooting and a report is
expected in the coming months.
Tuesdays fatal incident began around
2:15 p.m. when the 44-year-old victim
called police to report her ex-husband
arrived at her work on the 400 block of
Penobscot Drive in the Seaport Centre busi-
ness complex east of Highway 101 and near
the Port of Redwood City, according to
police.
The man abruptly stopped his vehicle in
the middle of the parking lot and, when the
woman refused to talk to him, the man went
to his truck and pulled out a handgun. He
then threatened her with the gun while chas-
ing her and fired at least one shot into the
air, according to police.

A former San Bruno firefighter was arrested and charged

with two felony counts of grand theft after she allegedly
stole nearly $25,000 from a childrens toy drive benefiting
low-income families in the community.
Holly Kaye Nelson, 53, was arrested Monday for alleged-
ly stealing from the San Bruno Professional Firefighters
Associations toy drive in 2015 and 2016, according to
police and prosecutors.
It takes a special type of thief to steal from a childrens
toy fund. Callous is not adequate to describe that type of
conduct, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Nelson was employed with the San Bruno department for
more than 15 years and spent nearly a decade running the
firefighter unions annual charity, according to the associa-

College officials consider district elections

County community college district offi-
cials are slated to take a next step in the move
from at-large elections in the interest of lev-
eling the playing field for all seeking a seat
on the school board.
The San Mateo County Community
College District Board of Trustees will hold a
public hearing Wednesday, March 22, gather-
ing feedback on a proposed transition to by-
district elections.
The focus of the upcoming conversation
will be three proposed maps divvying the
county into areas determining districts where
candidates must live and would represent
should they be elected.
Though officials were reticent to offer feed-
back regarding the merits of each proposed
map before the meeting, they did express an
interest in ultimately adopting the by-district
election method.
I think this is pretty much where we are
going, said board President Tom Mohr. The
question really is which of the three scenarios
the board will decide is the best.
Trustee Karen Schwarz echoed a similar sen-
timent.
I think it could happen very easily, she
said. Hopefully we will get more diversity
on the board.
Shifts to the by-district system are often
brought by an interest among officials to
encourage civic participation in communities
commonly underrepresented on elected
boards.
The Sequoia Union High School District
recently adopted the change under the threat
of a lawsuit from a civil justice organization

claiming some residents of Redwood City and
East Palo Alto felt their best interests were
not being served by an all-white school
board. The South San Francisco Unified
School District has discussed a similar
change to protect against a potential lawsuit
as well.
No such legal challenge has been issued to
the community college district, said Schwarz,
who noted her hope the shift would invite
greater participation by subdividing the
county into smaller regions more manage-
able for someone on a limited budget to run a
campaign.
The merit is simple that you have a
trustee that represents one area that only has
to campaign in that area, she said.
Hopefully you get more people that want to
run for the board. Now, being countywide, it
is very expensive to run.
Mohr also lauded the potential benefits
offered by a departure from the current system
under which trustees must canvass an entire
county for a seat on the board.
Should the board ultimately go ahead with
the change, Schwarz said she harbors con-
cerns those elected would hold the interest of
their supporters above the entire districts
well-being. Such a reservation is common
among those identifying potential issues
with the by-district system, but Schwarz said
ultimately she is hopeful anyone seeking
elected office would keep an eye to serving all
county students equally.
I dont think you can help that not hap-
pening, she said. But we will see.
The board has considered a similar shift in
the past, but momentum dissolved after an
initial round of talks, said Schwarz.
There is no definite timeline for the board
to move ahead with the shift, should it ulti-
mately be adopted, as another public hearing
is scheduled next month. Schwarz though
suggested officials should consider making
the move concurrently with the transition to
even-year elections, which was recently
approved by the board.
Looking ahead to the upcoming meeting,
Mohr and Schwarz said they are hopeful resi-
dents and voters attend to share their perspec-
tive on the proposal.
We are doing this and they have the oppor-
tunity to ask questions, she said.
For his part, Mohr said he believed ramp-
ing up public participation in the district
could result in better educational opportuni-
ties for the entire community.
I think there is a genuine concern that we
provide a great opportunity to represent all
people of the county, and that all people of
the county have a stake in the well-being of
the district, he said.

LAPD: Latinos report fewer sex crimes amid fears

LOS ANGELES Reports of sexual
assaults and domestic violence among
Los Angeles Latino population have
plummeted since the beginning of the
year, amid fears that immigrants in the
country illegally could face deporta-
tion if they interact with police or
appear in court, the citys police chief
said Tuesday.
Since the beginning of 2017, sexual
assault reports have dropped 25 per-
cent and domestic violence reports
have decreased by 10 percent among
Latinos, Los Angeles Police
Department Chief Charlie Beck said
Tuesday. Similar decreases werent
seen in other ethnic groups, he said.

not reporting a sexual assault for fear
that their family will be torn apart,
Beck said Tuesday.
Around the nation, President Donald
Trumps efforts to crack down on the
estimated 11 million immigrants liv-
ing illegally in the U.S. have sparked
fear and anxiety, leading many people
to try to avoid any contact with law
enforcement.
Beck said there was a strong corre-
lation between the timing of the
decreased reporting and fears of accel-
erated efforts to round up and deport
immigrants.
Josh Rubenstein, a Los Angeles
police spokesman, said the numbers
were concerning and that the depart-
ment is continuing to look at every
element contributing to the drop in
reporting.
Advocates say the unease among
immigrants is forcing the victims of
violent crimes to stay silent.
We are seeing immigrant families
potentially being so afraid of the ulti-
mate punishment, which deportation
represents, that they may forego their
chances of justice, said Jorge-Mario
Cabrera, of the immigrant advocacy
group CHIRLA. We do not want to be
in a situation where victims of crimes
remain silent because they fear depor-
tation. Thats just horrible and
unthinkable.
In an interview with the Associated
Press earlier this month, Los Angeles
County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said
gang members have also been preying
on undocumented immigrants and
telling them they would be deported if
they report crimes to the police.

Residential burglary in Hillsborough
Hillsborough police are investigating a residential burgla-
ry Monday on the 300 block of Darrell Road between 11 a.m.
and 7:23 p.m., according to police.
It is believed that someone gained entry by forcing open a
rear bedroom door. Some of the stolen property was dropped
in the backyard of the residence and was recovered at a later
time. Investigators believe the suspect(s) in this case may
have become startled and fled the scene, according to police.
Hillsborough police are seeking additional witnesses in
this case. Anyone who noticed suspicious people or vehicles
in this area during the time frame of the crime, is asked to call
(650) 375-7470. Additionally, police are asking residents
who have residential video surveillance systems in this
neighborhood to review their video and share any footage
that may assist in the investigation.
S.F. firefighter pleads not guilty to domestic violence
A San Francisco Fire Department battalion chief pleaded
not guilty Monday to misdemeanor domestic violence
charges in San Mateo County stemming from an alleged
assault at a Daly City restaurant last month, prosecutors said.

Cities, sheriffs find flaws in
Trumps immigration jail list

AUSTIN, Texas Several city officials
and sheriffs around the U.S. lashed out
Tuesday at a White House report aiming to
shame them over what the Trump adminis-
tration sees as lax immigration policies,
saying it includes wrong or misleading
information about recent arrests of immi-
grants or their jail policies.
The pushback was not just from liberal
local governments that are at odds with
President Donald Trump over immigration
crackdowns and his promise to deport bad
dudes living in the United States illegally.
In Texas, the elected Republican sheriff of
conservative Williamson County said his
jail didnt refuse four recent immigration
detainer requests as claimed.
The list was prompted by an executive
order signed by Trump in January that called
on the government to document which local
jurisdictions arent cooperating with federal
efforts to find and deport immigrants in the
country illegally.
The first list was released Monday, citing
206 examples of immigrants who were said
to have been released from custody by local
jails despite requests from federal agents.
The requests, often called detainers, have

Bridge closure leaves Californias

NEW YORK You might have expected
the Trump Organization to tap the brakes on
expansion plans given all the criticism
over potential conflicts of interest while its
owner sits in the Oval Office.
Its hitting the accelerator instead.
The company owned by President Donald
Trump is launching a chain of new hotels
with plans to open in cities large and small
across the country. Called Scion, they will
be the first Trump-run hotels not to bear the
familys gilded name. The hotels will feature
modern, sleek interiors and communal
areas, and offer rooms at $200 to $300 a
night, about half what it costs at some
hotels in Trumps luxury chain.
The company has signed letters of intent
with more than 20 developers to build the
hotels, said Trump Hotels CEO Eric
Danziger. The last three were signed in just
one week earlier this month.
Its full steam ahead. Its in our DNA. Its
in the Trump boys DNA, said Danziger.
The boys are Eric and Donald Jr., who are
running their fathers company while he is
president. The bold expansion plan raises
some thorny ethical questions.
The Trump family wont be putting up any
money to build the hotels. Instead, it plans
to get local real estate developers and their
investors to foot the bill, as do most major
hotel chains.
One of the first going up could be in
Dallas. A development company there orig-
inally planned to raise money from
unnamed investors in Kazakhstan, Turkey
and Qatar, but recently told the Dallas
Morning News that it now will tap only the
companys U.S. partners.
Government ethics experts say turning to
outside money, whether foreign or
American, raises the specter of people try-
ing to use their investment to gain favor

no dollar limits or public disclosure.
This is the new version of pay-to-play,

The Trump family will have to overcome
some political obstacles, too. Already,
politicians in a few cities mentioned as pos-
sible sites have vowed to fight the first fam-
ily, raising the prospect of a struggle to get
zoning and other permits to start building.
The son of German and Polish refugees
from World War II, CEO Danziger is no
stranger to long odds. He never went to col-
lege, instead taking a job as a bellman at a
San Francisco hotel at 17. He worked him-
self up over the decades to CEO spots at sev-
eral major hospitality companies.
When Danziger led Starwood Hotels and
Resorts in the 1990s, he expanded the num-
ber of hotels from 20 to nearly 600.
The 62-year-old executive has similar
ambitions for the Trump family. He said he
hopes to open 50 to 100 Scions in three
years, and is planning to add to Trumps
existing line of luxury hotels.
Danziger took over Trumps hotel busi-
ness in August 2015 with hopes of adding to
the companys string of properties abroad.
A review of trademark databases by the
Associated Press shows the Trump family
has applied for rights to use the Scion name
in several countries, including China,
Indonesia, Canada and 28 nations in
Europe. An application for trademark rights
in the Dominican Republic was approved as
late as December.
Then President Trump held a news confer-
ence the next month and basically killed the
international plans. A week before he took
office, he pledged that his company would
strike no new foreign deals while he was
president to allay concerns that foreigners
might try to influence U.S. policy by help-
ing his business abroad.

Gorsuch: No promises

Police: Chicago teen apparently gang-raped on Facebook Live

Chicago girl was apparently sexu-
ally assaulted by five or six men
or boys on Facebook Live, and
none of the roughly 40 people
who watched the live video report-
ed the attack to police, authorities
said Tuesday.
The video marks the second time
in recent months that the Chicago
Police Department has investigat-
ed an apparent attack that was
streamed live on Facebook. In
January, four people were arrested
after a cellphone footage showed
them allegedly taunting and beat-
ing a mentally disabled man.
Police only learned of the latest
alleged attack when the girls
mother approached the head of the
police department, Superintendent
Eddie Johnson, late Monday after-
noon as he was leaving a depart-
ment station in the Lawndale
neighborhood on the citys West
Side, department spokesman
Anthony Guglielmi said. She told
him her daughter had been missing
since Sunday and showed him
screen grab photos of the alleged
assault.
He said Johnson immediately
ordered detectives to investigate
and the department asked
Facebook to take down the video,
which it did.
Guglielmi said Tuesday that
detectives found the girl and
reunited her with her family. He
said she told detectives that she
knows at least one of her alleged
attackers, but it remained unclear
how well they knew each other. He
said investigators are questioning
several people, but no one is con-
sidered a suspect yet and no arrests
have been made.
He said Johnson was visibly
upset after he watched the video,
both by its content and the fact
that there were 40 or so live
viewers and no one thought to call
authorities.
Investigators know the number
of viewers because the count was
posted with the video. To find out
who they were, though, investiga-
tors would have to subpoena
Facebook and would need to
prove a nexus to criminal activi-
ty to obtain such a subpoena,
Guglielmi said by email.

Israel plans mass
evacuation if war

tants in Gaza or Lebanon go to war
with Israel, they could find their
usual targets empty.
Israel is drawing up contingency
plans to evacuate up to a quarter-
million civilians from border
communities to protect them from
attacks from Hamas, Hezbollah or
other Islamic militant groups.
The mass evacuations would be
the biggest in Israels history,
part of a bigger plan where the
army works with municipalities to
keep civilians safe.
All sides have been preparing in
case a new round of warfare breaks
out, although Hezbollah, an
Iranian-backed group sworn to
Israels destruction, currently is
tied down in Syrias civil war
fighting in support of President
Bashar Assad.
Each side has warned that a new
conflict would be worse than pre-

provides a completely different pic-

Dubbed the California School
Dashboard, its aim was to provide
more information on a variety of
topics in response to not only new
Common Core standards and the
Smarter Balanced tests but also new
categories in light of the states new
Local Control Funding Formula.
A dashboard in essence provides
useful data, how fast you are going,
what level your fuel is, if your
engine is running hot, what your
revolutions per minute are and if you
need to check your engine. Based on
your situation, one indicator may be
more meaningful for you than oth-
ers, but it is an apt description for a
variety of indicators based on levels
of data.

Donald Trump now suspects that
President Barack Obama had wire-
tapped him, expressing frustration
because he cant believe that none of
the investigating agencies can find
anything. Perhaps he should engage
the same investigating team he sent to
Hawaii to expose Obamas birth cer-
tificate fraud, to which he
announced: You wont believe what
they are finding! findings that
were never disclosed. It may take
another five years before he has to
accept that there was nothing to it, but
at least it takes some attention away
from his own shady activities for a
while.
Who knows, it may work again,

As one goes down the icons, a piece
of the fruit-like slice is missing, so
green (the second-highest) has one
piece missing, and yellow (the mid-
dle) has two pieces missing, orange
(the second-lowest) has two pieces
and red (the lowest) has but one
slice. It makes it seem as if the
missing pieces are indicative of a
further level of data, but they are
not. It would be simpler to just have
dots of different colors without
missing pieces or dots of the same
color with missing pieces. This
obscure performance level key can
be overcome, but is indicative of the
confusing and incomplete informa-
tion on the site.
It is also difficult to discern what
the levels are and if they are matched
up to the colored fruit-like slice and
how points above or below are deter-
mined and out of what larger number
those points are taken out of. Say
for instance, one wanted to deter-
mine how students with disabilities
were doing in a particular school.
There may not be a fruit-like slice
attached to that data point and there
may also be information that says
the schools status is very low,
being 102.1 points below level 3,
but with no indication what level 3
is and how many points it may be
able to drop from one level to the

When you look around society
today, you see young people that are
overweight. My take on all of this is
that the high-tech society that we
live in is making everyone less
active. There is also all the identity
theft, and other compromised infor-
mation, that people are getting their
hands on. But, every day all I see is
people on their smartphones, iPads

Computers may have made things
better in the business world, but
theyre killing us in the everyday
world. Everything that can be done
through automation is being taken
over. The worst part is that instead of
getting on a bicycle and going for a
ride, people are getting on the inter-
net and going for a ride, and this one
doesnt benet your health. Instead of
playing touch football in the street,
these days kids would rather be play-
ing football on their PlayStation

There is also the issue that if one
were to click detailed reports, where
one might think more detailed infor-
mation might be, there is something
that reads Coming Soon! Granted,
the site appears to be in a beta form
with lots of N/As, so there could be
some improvement once there is
more detailed reports and more com-
plete information.
Also largely missing is any type
of score. It used to be that you could
see a school in the 800s and have a
fairly good idea its a pretty good
school. There are other factors that
go into a schools success, and a
school in the 600s could also be
good but have some outstanding fac-
tors. Exploring those outstanding
factors and providing information
on them is a good goal, but not
when it dilutes the information for
all.
The dashboard as it stands right
now is fairly useless, and that could
change once more information fills
in. But the template also seems fair-
ly poor as something parents may
be able to use to see how their
school is doing compared to other
schools in the district or even other
districts.
While relying on one number can
be seen as an incomplete indicator,
providing a poorly designed dash-
board with little information from
which to glean is worse.

illusions and old science to confront reality, so
a country must keep challenging its traditions
if it is to be transformed if it wants renewal.

When I realized that March is Womens History
Month, an observance and celebration of the vital role
of women in American history, I soon recalled the 70s
when the Womens Movement was in full swing. On
March 22, 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was
enacted. Unfortunately, though Congress passed the
amendment, it was never ratified by the required number of
states.
Im sure the feminists who were demanding equal rights
in the 70s had no idea what life would be like in 2017. I
wonder if they had any idea that by now it would be neces-
sary (not just a choice) for many mothers of babies and
toddlers to be employed to make ends meet. I wonder if
they thought about the
effect on children who
would be left in the care of
others when very young or
to fend for themselves so
much of the time as they
grew older. And now, as

Area News Group wrote on
March 12, In recent years,
leaders of the feminist
movement have begun to
rethink the idea that parent-
ing or other unpaid or low-
paid caring occupations
are less personally fulfill-
ing or valuable to society than occupations that earn lots
of money. She referred to Anne-Marie Slaughter, academ-
ic and former state department official, who wrote that it
is important for society to find a way to recognize the
importance of work that involves investing in other
people. She also believes that its not feminist to think
that women only achieve equality when they earn an
income for work traditionally done by men.
You cant blame the 70s feminists for trying to gain
equality and better their lot. For far too long, women had
been subjected to second-class status, expected to kowtow
to men, and lacking in many important rights. Some of
the original womens libbers attempted to imitate men in
the workplace. Some career women even wore masculine
looking suits to work with their version of ties. They dis-
missed womens roles as homemakers and mothers, caus-
ing some women so occupied feel like they were traitors
to the cause.
In the 80s, I wondered if feminists ever thought that
they should have carried on their crusade in a way that
would have brought more equality for women but would
not have jeopardized their childrens optimal growth and
development. No, they were in denial spouting newly
coined sayings such as: Quality time makes up for quanti-
ty time. In their zeal to bring about the changes about
that mothers could concentrate on fulfilling themselves
and their children would thrive. But children whose par-
ents are too often distracted and overwhelmed can easily
come to feel that they dont really matter. And, among
other things, the child may have to deal with situations
he/she is not ready for and, as a result, may miss out on
some important aspects of healthy growth and develop-
ment.
In 1970, less than a third of women with preschool
children worked outside the home. In 1976, it was 43 per-
cent. By 1986, it would be half. Then came the 1990s,
followed by the new century. And today, Martha Ross
reports on the many people she has communicated with
who emphasized the immeasurable contributions many
women make to their communities while women are doing
what they have traditionally done taking care of other
people.
Women of the modern generation who, for the most
part, have not had to deal with the problems of discrimi-
nation like the original libbers, seem to have come to the
conclusion that they are entitled to having it all. They are
individuals in their own right. No more trying to emulate
men. The ties and sensible shoes went the way of the man-
ual typewriter and the dial telephone. The paradigm has
shifted into a kind of arrogance. They have made great
strides and they know it and woe to anyone who gets in
the way. But what about the children?
At the end of her book, When Everything Changed
the amazing journey of American women from 1960 to the
present, Gail Collins wrote: The feminist movement in
the late 20th century created a new United States in which
women ran for president, fought for their country, argued
before the Supreme Court, performed heart surgery, direct-
ed movies and flew into space. But it did not resolve the
tensions of trying to raise children and hold down a job at
the same time.

as the No. 1 singles player for the Carlmont
boys tennis team. And, with his 6-3, 6-0
win keeping his undefeated varsity record in

Nearly every baseball player can hit, but
not every baseball player is a hitter.
Take Half Moon Bays Ryan Yerby, for
example. A standout for the Cougars bas-
ketball team that advanced to the Northern
California playoffs, Yerby is just starting
to get his baseball legs under him. His
name isnt even listed on the
MaxPreps.com Half Moon Bay team page
yet.
He nally made his rst appearance on
the mound last Saturday. Tuesday against
San Mateo was only his second outing of
the season, as he came on in relief in top of
the sixth inning with his team trailing 3-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, he found
himself standing in the left-handed batters
box with the bases loaded and his team
trailing 4-3.
An admitted pitcher, I didnt even hit dur-
ing the summer, Yerby had no expecta-
tions. But he got a fastball he could handle
from San Mateos Kevin Jacobs and Yerby
smashed a hot shot right through the middle
of the Bearcats drawn-in ineld, driving in
Morgan Drobnik and Jakob Meighen to
give the Cougars a walk-off, 5-4 victory in
the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean

I didnt put a lot of pressure on myself,
Yerby said, who was making his second at-

will represent the organization in the commu-
nity and at various Giants events.

been my home and the Giants will always be
my family. I look forward to spending time
with the team, young players in the system as
well as the Bay Area community.
The seven-time NL MVP spent his final 15
seasons with the Giants and hit 762 career
home runs.

Warriors get 28th road win with win over Dallas

DALLAS Klay Thompson had 23 points
with five 3-pointers and the Golden State
Warriors earned their 28th road win this sea-
son, beating the Dallas Mavericks 112-87 on
Tuesday night in a matchup of the Curry broth-
ers.
Stephen Curry, two-time MVP and the older
of the brothers, had 17 points and nine assists
for the defending NBA champion Warriors.
The Warriors, who have a league-high 57
wins overall this season, are the first team
ever with 28 road wins in three consecutive
seasons. They have a record 90 wins away
Warriors 112, Mavs 87
from home during that span.
Seth Curry, who was undrafted in 2013 and
just this year became a starter with the
Mavericks, had 10 points on 4-of-12 shoot-
ing. He is now 0-6 in NBA games against his

proven a good complement to one another,

I like playing doubles with [Nix],
Mahaffey said. Its a little bit lighter (than
singles). Were just trying to win at PALs
and CCS and then to make our mark at BHS.
With the win, Carlmont moves into a tie
for second place with Aragon in the PAL Bay

MADISON, Wis. Wisconsins win over
defending national champion and overall
No. 1 seed Villanova shook up office pools
around the country, though the tested
Badgers arent a typical No. 8 seed in the
NCAA Tournament.
Eleventh-seeded Xavier might be a sur-
prise team in the regional semifinals, but
with their 3-point prowess, the Musketeers
are capable of shooting their way past any
opponent.
At this stage of the NCAAs, every team
left is brimming with confidence. No team
seems unbeatable to even the most unlikely
Cinderella.
Anything can happen in the Sweet 16.
A chip-on-your-shoulder mentality usu-
ally helps in sports and competitive situa-
tions, Xavier coach Chris Mack said after
his team ousted third-seeded Florida State in
the second round. So if its working, count
us as (an) 11 seed.
Two more victories for Wisconsin and the
Badgers senior class will have advanced to
a very impressive third Final Four in four
seasons.
Weve talked about the legacy we want to
leave, senior guard Bronson Koenig said
Monday. Getting to another Final Four has
been one of those goals weve been talking

ways to win games . The defense is solid, and
Butler is shooting 47 percent from 3-point
range in the tourney. The Tar Heels are 10th in
the nation in scoring (85.1 points) but had to
hold off Arkansas in the second round. A team
with three returnees who were on the court last
year for Villanovas title-winning 3-pointer at
the buzzer is also eager to get back to the Final
Four.

Kentucky (3 1 -5 ): Rematch! UCLA won the
teams first meeting on Dec. 3, 97-92. Fast
forward to March, and UCLAs Lonzo Ball is
on a roll . The star freshman played so well in
upset bid to move on. Tyler Dorsey is averag-

Bumgarner sharp in latest spring start

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Madison Bumgarner
looked sharp again in his latest spring train-
ing outing, though it lasted only two innings.
Officially, anyway. After the San Francisco
ace blanked the Padres, he went to the bullpen
to throw some more Tuesday, taking breaks to
simulate game conditions. He threw 85 pitch-
es in during the day.
Bumgarner struck out three and allowed two
hits without a run against San Diego. Hes
going to get five days off before his spring
training finale, slated for March 27 against
Cincinnati, then five more rest days before
taking the mound on opening day in Arizona
April 2.
Im not ever going to complain about an
extra day, Bumgarner said.

Justin Hoffman, director of Starships
Silicon Valley operations, said the robots
pilot operations have been centered around
the companys downtown Redwood City
working to hire robot handlers to look after
and analyze qualitative and quantitative data
collected from their deliveries.
Engaging with the community as we go

Hoffman said feedback from pedestrians

rable to that of a pedestrian.

Quite often, I think a simple Greek salad is
perfect as is, no adornments needed. But you
may notice that in many eateries, from diners
to higher-end restaurants, you often get a
choice of added protein, usually chicken,
shrimp or steak. And its true, that extra pro-
tein does make a salad feel more like a fully
rounded meal.
A few slices of pink, perfectly cooked steak
draped across a colorful bowl of Greek salad
make a lunch or dinner that knows no season,
but that feels particularly nice as the weather
warms up. You can serve it up on a big platter
or on individual plates.
If you have any kind of leftover steak in the
fridge, slice that right up; this is the perfect
way to use up those few pieces that arent
quite enough for a meal on their own.
And if you arent in the mood for steak,
take a cue from the restaurants and think
about swapping in salmon, chicken or
shrimp.

ket for lobsters in China is continuing to
grow, with the country setting a new record
for the value of its imports of the crustaceans

American lobster was almost unheard of in
most of China until 2010, when the value of

dough and known for a rich artisan culture.
Initially she spent about a year working
overnight as a baker at Facebooks Menlo
Park headquarters. But she eventually found
her way into KitchenTown where she
worked for another startup, Pain Bakery,
before venturing on her own.
The community supported bakery model

agriculture is working well and one day
she hopes to expand and hire others inter-
ested in learning the art of baking bread.
She thrives off the fast-paced nature of

A gunshot could be heard by the dis-
patcher and others witnesses called
911 to report the incident, Kirby said.
Officers arrived on scene quickly and
located the woman who was uninjured,
according to police.
They located the man holding a gun
within two minutes of the initial
report on the 200 block of Saginow
Way. Officers attempted to persuade
the man to put the gun down but at one
point he brandished the weapon at
nearby officers. Fearing for their safe-
ty, one officer fired a shot, according
to police.

tion as the sole person in charge of a
bank account in which toy drive dona-
tions from the public were kept.
Nelsons alleged actions were discov-
ered after she voluntarily left the
department in October due to a work-
ers compensation injury, said associa-
tion Vice President Dennis Molloy.
Shortly after a new firefighter was
put in charge of the charity, the associ-
ation began to suspect something was
amiss after suspicious withdrawals
from the account were uncovered. The
association notified police, prompt-
ing an investigation before a warrant
was issued for Nelsons arrest earlier
this month, according to prosecutors.

program for the community, it benefits
a lot of families and we just want to
then reportedly used his own weapon
to shoot himself in the head, said
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Kirby said the departments recent
history with the subject factored into
their response. He had an active
restraining order, was known to have
guns registered to him and was seen
with a weapon Tuesday, Kirby said.
The officers knew a couple facts
coming into the incident that prepared
them for confrontation, Kirby said.
They knew they were basically work-
ing with an individual who was not of
his right mindset because he kept con-
fronting his ex-wife in a very volatile
manner.
The first encounter with the couple
began March 9 when he was taken into
custody for a low-level domestic
violence dispute. On March 10, the
man allegedly broke into a home he
and the woman shared at one point and
confronted her. She contacted police
and was given a temporary restraining
order. Officers also confiscated guns
that were registered to the man, accord-
ing to police.
On March 14, he allegedly violat-
ed the temporary restraining order
by contacting the woman, prompt-
ing her to seek an extended protec-

Nelson, a Cloverdale resident, was
arrested in Sonoma County and booked
into their jail before bailing out on
$35,000. She will be prosecuted in
San Mateo County and her next court
date was not immediately available,
Wagstaffe said.
The investigation revealed Nelson
had made multiple withdraws from
ATMs, some even out of state, and
wrote checks to herself from the chari-
tys account, Wagstaffe said.
Over the course of about two years,
Nelson allegedly stole nearly $25,000
from the toy drive and is now facing
two felony grand theft charges. If con-
victed, she could face up to three years
and eight months behind bars,
Wagstaffe said.
According to Nelsons LinkedIn pro-
file, outside of her more than 15-year
career as a firefighter paramedic for
San Bruno, she has served as a fire-
fighter and paramedic skills instructor
for Santa Rosa Junior Colleges Public
Safety Training Center since 2013.
At the time of her alleged theft,

At the time of Tuesdays shooting
death, the man was prohibited from
possessing weapons per state laws. It
was not immediately clear to whom the
gun used by the man this week
belonged.
Wagstaffe said the deceased had no
record of convictions in San Mateo
County.
The officer who shot the suspect was
placed on administrative leave and will
be investigated by the District
Attorneys Office. Wagstaffe said he
expected a report in the next eight to
10 weeks.
Kirby and Wagstaffe said they could-
nt think of anything the ex-wife could
have done differently.

Wagstaffe, who noted the ex-wife
was cooperating, said these cases are

its shooting or another incident, we
always wish it were the last one,
Wagstaffe said. And it never is.
Nelson was the only person oversee-
ing the toy drives bank account. As
part of the toy drive, monetary dona-
tions have been collected from local
businesses, the generous members of
the public and even firefighters them-
selves, Molloy said. The firefighters
association has since put new account-
ability protocol in place such as
ensuring multiple people are oversee-
ing the account to prevent such an
incident from happening again. The
annual toy drive serves nearly 100
low-income families in San Bruno and
Molloy said they wont be deterred in
their efforts to continue supporting
those in need.

tunate circumstance and that our asso-
ciation as a group, we were the victims
here, but ultimately, the victims are
going to be the community, the people
that benefit from this the most,
Molloy said, adding the association
