Community college officials examine district maps

Trustees inch toward selecting new maps for shift away from at-large elections

Under a move from at-large elections, San
Mateo County Community College District
officials are examining the merits of three
potential maps segmenting the voting pop-
ulation into wards.
Two proposed maps subdivide the district
into five regions which each trustee would
represent, and a third
expands the board by
two trustees through
proposing seven dis-
tricts.

The two five-district maps are largely
similar, as four trustees would represent dif-
ferent communities spanning the countys
stretch of Highway 101, with wards built
around major cities such as Redwood City,
San Mateo, South San Francisco and west
from the Peninsula thoroughfare to Daly
City. The final district spans much of the
coast from Pacifica, over to the Interstate

can and raise funds as it plans to relo-
cate its Redwood City no-kill cat shel-
ter in the coming weeks.

to five months as it transitions to a
new location nearby, said Dr. Monica
Rudiger, a veterinarian who founded

Martha D. Loeza
Martha D. Loeza, born July 29, 1935,
died peacefully April 25, 2017, sur-
rounded by her chil-
dren, grandchildren
and great-grandchil-
dren.
She was a very
loving, caring and
generous natured
woman. She emi-
grated from Mexico
in 1961 and lived in
San Mateo County all her life. She
enjoyed spending her days at the South
San Francisco Adult Care where she had
many friends. Marthas husband Angel
De Loeza and son Victor Loeza prede-
ceased Martha. She always held their
memory close to her heart. She loved
her children dearly and nothing gave
her more enjoyment and pleasure than
seeing her family grow and flourish.
She had a quick smile, a happy sense of
humor and was renowned for her cook-
ing. She learned to speak English in her
later years by attending school and was
proud when she became a U.S. citizen.
She is survived by her children Laura,
Norma, Tony, Rita, Xochitl, Dora and

Kaoru Sakakura Shiosaka, born Dec.
3, 1924, died Sept. 1, 2016
Wife, mother and grandmother, she
was born in Tsu City of Mie prefecture
in Japan to Motoichi and Shigeko
Sakakura. The middle child Kazuma,
Michiko, Miyoko, Kaoru, Minoru and
Sakae. Her nickname was Ton among
the four devoted and lifelong friends
from elementary school Mrs. Kashu,
Mrs. Nomura and Mrs. Tone. Kaoru
graduated from Mita Senior High
School in Tokyo, Japan.
On Nov. 27, 1948, Kaoru married
Edward Toshio Shiosaka (60 years).

With much perseverance and pride she
attained her U.S. citizenship Nov. 26,
1965.
Kaoru is survived by her eldest sister
Michiko, daughter Mary Ann (John,
Danyel), son Joseph, son Thomas
(Roxanne), daughter Carol (Alex,
Matthew and Brandon), and many fami-
ly and friends in California and Japan.
Private celebration of life has been
held.

Sheriffs officials seek help
finding missing man, 33
The San Mateo County Sheriffs Office is asking for the
publics help in locating a missing 33-year-old San
Carlos man.
Sayak Banerjee was last seen some-
time during the week of April 17 by
neighbors near his home on the 1100
block of Laurel Street, according to
sheriffs officials.
Banerjee also spoke to his wife via
cellphone on April 20.
He was supposed to arrive in Orlando,
Sayak Banerjee Florida, on April 24 to meet his wife but
sheriffs officials say there is no evi-
dence that he ever boarded his flight.
Investigators think Banerjee drove away from his home
in a black 2005 Hyundai with a license plate number of
6VDS335, according to sheriffs officials.
His disappearance is abnormal since it is not common
behavior for him, sheriffs officials said in a written
statement. At this time there is no information or evi-
dence that suggests any foul play in his disappearance.

Man pleads not guilty in cockfighting case
An East Palo Alto man pleaded not guilty Thursday
morning to felony animal cruelty charges related to sus-
pected cockfighting at his home, where police allegedly
found more than 50 gamecocks, hens and chicks, San
Mateo County prosecutors said.
Aldenni de Jesus Trujillo Santiago, 29, was arrested after
police responded to the 1200 block of Cypress Street on
March 23 on a report of an aggressive dog.
Officers with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA
also responded to the scene and determined that the dog
was not aggressive to people, but had been trying to
attack the birds. A total of 56 birds were found, including
11 gamecocks with their wattle removed for cockfighting,
prosecutors said.
One had apparently been disemboweled and was decom-
posing in the yard. Others were severely injured.
Investigators found injectable antibiotics and other
cockfighting paraphernalia, and a search of Santiagos
phone turned up numerous videos dating back to January
that showed Santiago staging cockfights in his yard,
according to prosecutors.
Santiago is scheduled to return to court on May 24. His
defense attorney Martin Caraves was not immediately
available for comment on the case.
Man sentenced to three years probation
for attempted robbery in San Mateo
A San Mateo transient was sentenced to three years
supervised probation and 241 days in county jail
Wednesday after he pleaded no contest in March to charges
of attempted robbery, according to the San Mateo County
District Attorneys Office.
Isaak Torres Figueroa, 23, was given credit for time
served and will not serve additional time in county jail. He
will also be required to complete an outpatient drug treat-
ment program, according to prosecutors.
Figueroa was arrested near downtown San Mateo Dec. 27
after allegedly getting into a fight and trying to steal a
mans bike in the parking lot of Hassett Hardware at 545
First Ave., according to police.
Figueroa fled before police responded to a report of two
men fighting, but a community member alerting police
about a suspicious man hiding in a vehicle led to his
arrest. He was found with a glass methamphetamine pipe,
and the victim suffered minor injuries, according to
police.

California lawmakers may require untested rape kit reporting

SACRAMENTO California lawmakers
may start requiring police departments to
track the status of rape evidence kits in an
effort to reduce the backlog of untested evi-
dence.
The state Assembly on Thursday unani-
mously passed a bill that would require
police to report information about rape evi-
dence kits that have been collected by
investigators but remain untested. AB41
now goes to the state Senate.
Rape kits are used to gather and preserve
evidence after victims say they have been
sexual assaulted. The kits contain DNA evi-
dence collected during an examination of
the victim that can last hours and can be
extremely invasive, said Assemblyman
David Chiu, the bills author.
Chiu has said there are more than 6,000
untested rape kits in California but no com-
prehensive data on how many are collected
and why some have not been tested. The San
Francisco Democrat says his bill would
help decrease untested kits by requiring
police to report them.
I hope that the injustice of the situation
is obvious, he said. When a rape kit
remains untested, it re-traumatizes sur-
vivors and allows criminals to roam free.
Under the bill, police would send infor-
mation on the kits to the California
Department of Justice, which would submit
annual reports to lawmakers. The informa-
tion would help officials determine why
there is a backlog and how it can be
improved, Chiu said.
The requirements would apply for kits
collected starting next year.
Opponents of Chius bill have argued the
reporting requirements are too burdensome
for police departments.
Police sometimes do not submit the kits
for testing when they are not needed to iden-
tify the perpetrator or the victim has recant-
ed, said Cory Salzillo, a spokesman for the
California State Sheriffs Association.
Its unclear how a new reporting require-
ment would address the backlogg, Salzillo
added.
The issue has drawn nationwide attention.
There are estimated to be more than
100,000 untested sexual assault evidence
kits in the U.S.

Berkeley protests peaceful as
hundreds rally over Coulter

BERKELEY Hundreds of people waving
American flags and chanting USA held a
raucous rally Thursday at a park in Berkeley
home of the free speech movement to
protest a canceled appearance by conserva-
tive commentator Ann Coulter, but the
expected violence did not materialize.
Scores of officers in riot gear lined up in
preparation for possible violence between
supporters and opponents of Coulter, but
there were no major confrontations, largely
because members of an anti-fascist group
did not show up in force.
Coulter did not appear at the rally or show
up at the University of California, Berkeley
despite hinting that she might swing by to
say hello to her supporters. Coulter had
said she was forced to cancel a speaking
engagement at the school. University offi-
cials said they had been unable to find a
suitable and safe spot for her to speak, and
offered a May 2 date.
She did not immediately respond to a
request for comment from the Associated
Press, but she told Fox Newss Tucker
Carlson after the event that she wasnt

Cassini was out of radio contact with
Earth early Wednesday as it became the first
spacecraft to enter the gap between Saturn
and its rings. Thats because its big dish
antenna was maneuvered face forward to
protect science instruments from potential-
ly damaging ring particles.
If Cassini survives this first round, it will
make 21 more crossings before its demise
in September.

Court: Employers can pay
women less based on past salaries
SAN FRANCISCO Employers can legally pay women
less than men for the same work based on differences in the
workers previous salaries, a federal appeals court ruled
Thursday.
The decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals over-
turned a lower-court ruling that said pay differences based
exclusively on prior salaries were discriminatory under the
federal Equal Pay Act.
Thats because the differences were almost certainly the
result of gender bias, U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Seng
said in a 2015 decision.
A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit cited a 1982 ruling by
the court that said employers could use previous salary infor-
mation as long as they applied it reasonably and had a busi-
ness policy that justified it.
This decision is a step in the wrong direction if were try-
ing to really ensure that women have work opportunities of
equal pay, said Deborah Rhode, who teaches gender equity
law at Stanford Law School. You cant allow prior discrimi-
natory salary setting to justify future ones or you perpetuate
the discrimination.
Activists held rallies around the country earlier this month
on Equal Pay Day to highlight the wage gap between men and
women. Women made about 80 cents for every dollar men
earned in 2015, according to U.S. government data.

Now thats a damning audit.

CSU was that over the past eight
years the system has hired middle
managers at a rate at least twice that
of any other employee group, includ-
ing faculty. And that compensation
for managers has grown at three times
the rate of faculty pay.
Thats bad enough the people
who actually teach our young people
at CSU are more important than those
who direct them and shufe papers, in
our view.
But the ndings of Howles UC audit
are fairly explosive.
The Ofce of the President accumu-
lated more than $175 million in
restricted and discretionary reserves
that it failed to disclose to the regents
and created undisclosed budgets to
spend those reserve funds, the audi-
tor says in the fact sheet that accom-
panies the UC audit.
It goes on to say that the Ofce of

staff significantly more than their
counterparts in public employment.
For example, 10 UC execs made
$3. 7 million in combined salaries
in 2015-16, about 19 percent more
than their highest-paid state
support in Congress for public trans-
portation funding up to now. I urge
our congressional delegation to stand
up once again for transportation
investments that will benet all of us
and reject Trumps proposed cuts.

Two regents quickly responded,
complaining that having the
Legislature approve the UC presi-
dents budget would threaten the
Universitys standing as a constitu-
tionally autonomous entity.
Were not ready to say legislators
should get involved on that level.
After all, having the California
Legislature tell anyone else how to
spend money effectively is reminis-
cent of the pots maligning of the
kettle.
But certainly the Legislature should
insist that UC leaders who voted in
January to hike student tuition for
2017-18 clean up their own scal

Everyone talks about affordable
housing, yet it seems like everything
built today is geared toward the
wealthy. What ever happened to starter
homes? Perhaps our municipalities
should encourage developments of
more modest dwellings without all the
expensive features that drive the price
out of reach of the working class.
If we start subsidizing buyers and
renters, it will likely drive prices
even higher. If our cities are going to
throw money at the problem, they
should invest in the land and offer to
lease it at a discount to developers
who would build what the community
needs in the right locations. We need
to be shaping our own communities,
not leaving that up to the developers.

One of my favorite
places is no more
M
agda Luna was one of the few Mexican-
American or Latin-American restaurants in
the area where I could get vegan rice. Not
that Im a big fan, but for someone with a daughter who
is allergic to all things dairy, and that includes butter, it
was nice to find a spot that doesnt add it to the rice.
But it closed its doors last week after about four years
on Burlingames Broadway. The reason provided was
some sort of situation with the landlord and the three
women a mom and two daughters who ran it did
look for another location to
no avail before deciding to
close down for good.
Aside from the vegan rice, I
also liked the fresh food and
natural flavors. All the meat
was humanely sourced and
everything was made from
scratch. It felt authentic and
genuine. It had soul.
It was casual, but not fast
food and the people who ran
it were very nice. The fact
that it was family run was
reflected in the customers and
you never knew when a cross-
table conversation would break out. And it was success-
ful. There were always people there.
Sometimes, however, homespun goodness gets run
over by todays competitive business environment.
Small business owners struggle constantly with rising
costs, however, there is very little support for them
aside from regulars. If costs for food or employees rise,
it usually means the people who run it take home less.
Its the way of San Mateo County right now, and the
continuing struggle for small businesses means a bit of
our character will fall away.
And so the quick era of Magda Luna is over. And thats
too bad. It was one of my favorite places, and Im guess-
ing it was others too.

The former site of Capellini in downtown San Mateo
is vacant once again. While it sat vacant for about a
year before it was renovated and reopened under new
ownership in 2015, its new but same-old persona
Capellini did not make it very long before it was reno-
vated again to become Golden Gate Tap Room and Grill.
I went to the new Capellini when it first opened and it
showed some promise, but perhaps the initial buzz died
down. I also walked into the Golden Gate Tap Room and
Grill to check it out once but left after about 45 seconds
after seeing it was really just an enormous sports bar
with what seemed to be absolutely no one inside, not
even a worker. That seemed odd since the doors were
open and it was midday on a weekend. ONeills is a few
storefronts away and customers are loyal to the Irish
pub. Its hard to crack that nut.
The former Capellini site on the corner of B Street and
Baldwin Avenue has been vacant for a few months now
so the 10,000-square-foot, three-story property is avail-
able once again. Wonder whats next for the site.

Last weeks column on the Downtown Specific Plan
Update for San Mateo generated quite a bit of interest
and some new ideas as well. No one told me they hated
my ideas, but that doesnt mean there arent people who
do. One idea I hadnt thought of before was getting rid
of the slant parking on B Street between First and Third
avenues and expanding the sidewalks there. Not a bad
idea if the parking could be replaced elsewhere.
I might even suggest getting rid of all the parking in
that stretch. There could be several benefits. Wider side-
walks immediately would create a more pedestrian-
friendly environment and would also cut down on the
traffic jams since those are mostly caused by people
either waiting for a parking spot or hoping for a park-
ing spot. If there is no chance of a parking spot, per-
haps drivers would just move along to the Main Street
Garage. It would also allow for al fresco dining, which
is notably absent throughout most of downtown. That
would definitely help restaurants, perhaps a few of those
mom-and-pop ones that could always use a little help.
Anyway, keep the ideas coming!

Stocks nudge higher, push Nasdaq to record

above where they started. The
slight gains were enough to nudge
the Nasdaq composite to another
record and the Standard & Poors
500 index to within a whisper of

from big gains made early in the
week. The Standard & Poors 500
index rose 1.32 points, or 0.1 per-
cent, to 2,388.77 and is within a
third of a percent of its record.
The Dow Jones industrial aver-
age added 6.24 points, less than

Nasdaq composite rose 23.71, or

off a series of explosions and raising
tensions further between the two
neighbors.
Apparently seeking to interrupt
weapons transfers to the Hezbollah
group in Lebanon, Israel has struck
inside Syria with increasing frequen-
cy in recent weeks, making the war-
torn country a proxy theater for
Israels wider war with Iran.
The increasing tempo of attacks
risks inflaming a highly combustible
situation drawing in Israel, Syria and
the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, a
staunch ally of President Bashar
Assads government with thousands
of fighters in Syria. Israels military
said later Thursday that its Patriot
Missile Defense system intercepted
an incoming projectile from Syria
over the Golan Heights.
An Israeli defense official said the
Patriot hit a drone, and the military is
checking if it was a Russian aircraft
that entered the Israeli side by mis-
take or if it was Syrian. He spoke on
condition of anonymity in line with
protocol.
Both the Syrian government and
Hezbollah, however, are mired in the
countrys 6-year-old civil war and are
unlikely to carry out any retaliation
that may ignite a bigger conflagra-
tion with Israel.
Iran and Hezbollah are over-
stretched, and its not clear they can
afford to gamble with a direct show-
down with Israel now, said Maha
Yahya, director of the Carnegie
Middle East Center. Iran knows no
matter how powerful theyve become,
they cant be fighting on two fronts
at the same time.
Israeli Minister of Intelligence
Yisrael Katz would not comment
directly on the incident but said any
similar strike would be in line with
established policy to interrupt
weapons transfers.

missile strike, at least three cargo
jets from Iran probably landed at the
Damascus airport, said Ian Petchenik,
a spokesman for the flight-tracking
website FlightRadar24. They include

tracked over Iraq headed towards
Damascus, he said.
Its unknown what they were carry-
ing. Passenger flights and civilian

for Defense of Democracies, a right-

Rumors rife as gas restrictions
in North Korean capital drag on
PYONGYANG, North Korea An acute shortage of gaso-
line in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang that has
sparked price hikes and hoarding is raising fears of poten-
tially crippling pain at the pumps if things dont get better
soon and driving rumors that China is to blame.
The shortage, which is extremely unusual if not unprece-
dented, began last week when signs went up at gas stations
around the city informing customers that restrictions on
sales would be put in place until further notice. With no
indication as of Wednesday night of when the restrictions
might be lifted or why they have been imposed driv-
ers continue to scramble to fill up their tanks and whatever
other containers they can find.
Prices, meanwhile, have shot up. They had been fairly
stable, typically at about 70-80 cents a kilogram, but on
Wednesday at least one station was charging $1. 40.
Gasoline is sold by the kilogram in North Korean filling
stations. One kilogram is roughly equivalent to one liter,
so a gallon at the station costs about $5.30.
China supplies most of energy-poor North Koreas fuel,
and in lieu of official explanations, rumors are rife that
Beijing is behind the shortage. The concerns are adding to
a tense and uncertain mood on the Korean Peninsula since
U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office with repeated
calls for Beijing Pyongyangs economic lifeline to
get tough on North Korea, which has responded with coun-
terclaims Washington is pushing for a nuclear war.
Though trade between North Korea and China appears to
be solid, and possibly even growing, there are indications
Beijing has been quietly tightening enforcement of some
international sanctions aimed at getting Pyongyang to
abandon its development of nuclear weapons and long-
range missiles.
U.K. police arrest man
with weapon near Parliament
LONDON London police arrested a man for possession
of weapons Thursday near Britains Houses of Parliament.
The Metropolitan Police force said no one was injured in
the incident, which brought armed police flooding into the
area around Parliament.
Witnesses reported seeing armed police blocking off
Whitehall, a street lined with government buildings, and a
man on the ground.
A photo showed a forensic officer looking at a black bag
and what appeared to be two knives on the ground.
Security has been increased around Parliament after an
attacker drove an SUV into pedestrians on nearby
Westminster Bridge on March 22 before stabbing a police
officer to death inside the gates of Parliament. The attacker,
Khalid Masood, was shot dead by police.
Thursday is Parliaments last sitting day before Britains
June 8 election.

aged 13 to 17 and found that most
value the feeling of connection
with friends and family that social
media provides. A much smaller
number associate it with negative
emotions, such as being over-
whelmed or needing to always
show their best selves.
The survey, released Thursday,
found that teens social media
breaks are typically a week or
longer, and that boys are more
likely to take longer breaks.
Teens were allowed to cite multi-
ple reasons for their breaks.
Nearly two-thirds of teens who
took a break cited at least one vol-
untary reason. Amanda Lenhart,
the lead researcher and an expert
on young people and technology
use, said she was surprised by this,
as it counters the broader narrative
that teens are handcuffed to their
social media profiles.
Todays teenagers might not
recall a time before social media.

news and information.
About 35 percent of teens sur-
veyed said they have not taken a
break, citing such worries as miss-
ing out and being disconnected
from friends. Some said they need
were happy to be away from social

have to show the best version of

Teens who took breaks typical-
ly did so across the board, check-
ing out of Facebook, Snapchat and
all other services all at once. And
they were no more or less likely to
take breaks from social media
based on the type of services they
use.
Although they felt relief and
media for a while, most teens said
things went back to how they were
before once they returned to social
media.
The AP-NORC poll was conduct-
ed online and by phone from Dec.
7 to 31. A sample of parents with
teenage children was drawn from a
probability-based panel of NORC
Parents then gave permission for
their children to be interviewed.
The panel, AmeriSpeak, is
designed to be representative of
the U.S. population. The margin
of sampling error for all respon-
dents is plus or minus 4.6 percent-
age points.

Davison in the semifinals Wednesday.
In the end, Reznik proved to be the more
steady of the two. As Shafaie battled his
ground strokes in the gusting afternoon wind,
Reznik kept the ball in play. After winning
the first set, Reznik turned up the pressure,
using his net game to end points as quickly as
possible. Despite a late rally from Shafaie,
Reznik prevailed for a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
I feels great (to win the title), Reznik said.

to be an aggressive dealer in his first draft as
San Francisco 49ers general manager.
The front-office novice moved down one
spot in the NFL draft on Thursday night
before taking Stanford defensive lineman
Solomon Thomas to upgrade a porous
defense. He then used one of the three extra
picks he got in that deal to move up from
the second round to No. 31 overall to take
Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster.
San Francisco also added the 67th overall
pick from Chicago and the Bears third-
rounder next year in the first deal. Chicago
used the No. 2 pick to take North Carolina
quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

closed out a 107-61 win over rival Terra Nova
in Thursdays regular-season swimming finale

If Caada sophomore Joelle Huelse is
feeling any ill effects of a sore shoulder that
sidelined her prior to the season, it didnt
show Thursday as the Lady Colts opened

Huelse was nearly flawless through two
matches at Camino Real Park in Ventura. As
the No. 3 seed in singles, the sophomore

1 in her morning match. Then, in doubles
competition later that afternoon, Huelse
paired with sophomore Ana Hinojosa as the
No. 1 seed in the tournament to cruise to a 6-

free and 500 free races, while Henig, the reign-
ing Daily Journal Female Swimmer of the Year,
won the 50 and 100 free sprints.
Other M-A winners included Faith Dunn (200
IM) and Claire Haldeman (100 fly).
San Mateo had two individual winners. Emma
Lepisova swam a sub-minute 100 back, cover-
ing the distance in a time of 59.40. Valeriya

Senior right-hander Chris Loveland fired a
four-hit shutout to lead Crystal Springs Uplands
(5-4 in PAL Lake, 7-7 overall) past Westmoor

Senior No. 5 hitter David Young got the

with a three-run double. Young finished with
four RBIs on the day, moving into the team lead

The Crusaders rallied for a run in the bottom
of the seventh inning to pull out the win over
the Gators in WBAL Foothill Division action
to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the win, Mercy-Burlingame (4-3 WBAL
Foothill), pulls into a third-place tie with
Harker. The top three teams from the WBAL
Foothill Division automatically qualify for the
playoffs.
After Castilleja (1-7) scored three runs in the
top of the seventh to tie the score at 11, Amber
Abughardbieh tripled to lead off the bottom of
the seventh for the Crusaders. An overthrow at
third base enabled Abugharbieh to come home
with game-winning run.
It was the second double of the day for
Abugharbieh.
Kaylyn Sterling went 1 for 2 for Mercy, with
a home run in the sixth. Ryan Galea doubled
twice and also drove in a run. Carla Joachin-
Alvarez had a double.
Galea got a hard-earned win. She allowed
eight hits, but only three of the Gators run were
earned. She struck out 10 as she hurled a com-
plete game.

Madi Earnshaw pitched a complete game in

striking out seven.
Chloe Stogner and Carlee Miller led the

Bologna, who started the rally by getting hit by
a pitch for the fifth straight game and 12th time

Berg as the No. 6 seed to earn a comeback
victory 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 over San Diego
The comeback was a grueling match last-
ing two-and-a-half hours and was the only
doubles match still being played as the
third-set tiebreaker drew to a close.
After scuffling through a flurry of service
breaks in the first set, San Diego City broke
a 5-5 tie by rallying to win two straight
games then took a 3-2 lead in the second
set.
After that I think we had a groove there
and started playing very aggressively,
Berg said.
Caada proceeded to flip the script.
We were at 5-5 (in the second set) and
those last two games we won very quickly,
Berg said. I think that had to do with some
extra push.
Berg, 49, took up tennis seven years ago
but didnt start playing seriously until she
decided to return to school last year. A

The Dons defeated Menlo-Atherton in the
final regular-season meet of the season to take
the division team crown with a perfect 5-0
record.
M-A dominated the sprint events, but Aragon

Giants bullpen implodes in 10-inning loss to L.A.

SAN FRANCISCO Less than 24 hours
after losing to the Giants in 10 innings, the
Los Angeles Dodgers turned the tables and
managed just their second win in their last
nine games in San Francisco.
Run-scoring singles by Andrew Toles and
Justin Turner in the 10th inning led the
Dodgers to a 5-1 victory Thursday after Los
Angeles pitcher Julio Urias made a solid
start in his 2017 debut. Urias allowed one
run in 5 2-3 innings after being recalled
from Triple-A Oklahoma City before the
game.
It was a very good start by Julio, and that
was his opening day, Dodgers manager
Dave Roberts said. To get Julio back in the
rotation is a good thing for us. To have this
young kid with such composure is great.
The 20-year-old Urias, who went 5-2 in
four stints with the Dodgers last season,
allowed four hits, walked four and struck out
four.
I felt good, I felt confident, Urias said.
I felt like what I did last year was able to
help me build confidence for this year.
The Dodgers loaded the bases with no outs
in the 10th on two walks and an infield hit.
Angels beat As in pitchers duel

ANAHEIM Ricky Nolasco had extra
days between starts to work on mechanical
issues and it paid off as he led the Los
Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory over the
Oakland Athletics on Thursday night to earn
the series sweep.
Nolasco (2-2) threw 5 2/3 innings, allow-
ing one run and three hits. The Angels (12-
12) have won four consecutive games and
are back to .500 as they head to Texas.
Bud Norris is settling into the closers
role for Oakland. He pitched a scoreless
ninth for his fourth save of the season and
second in as many nights.
In the sixth inning, Nolasco walked two
batters and Yonder Alonso reached on an
error to load the bases. Blake Parker
relieved Nolasco and struck out Ryon Healy
with the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Angels, who scored eight runs in the
previous games win over the Athletics,

The Giants scored their only run in the
sixth on a walk, a two-base throwing error
by Urias on a pickoff attempt and a single
by Christian Arroyo that nicked Urias
glove on its way to center field. That hit
knocked Urias out of the game.
We have to get this offense going,
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Its a
better offense than what were showing. We
need to find a way to put a few runs on the
board.
Giants starter Matt Moore allowed one run
and two hits in seven innings, walking
three and striking out eight. The only run he
allowed came on a first-inning home run by

Manfred says two groups are still bidding to
buy the Miami Marlins from Jeffrey Loria.
New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and
former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are involved in
one of the groups. Bloomberg reported Tuesday
that the Jeter/Bush group won an auction for the
team with a $1.3 billion bid. Manfred said some
reports on the sale have been premature.
There are multiple bidders for the Marlins,
Manfred said Thursday. There is no agreement
in place. Were working with more than one
group, and when we have a definitive agreement
well make an announcement.
Asked about the timeline, Manfred respond-
ed: The timeline is relatively short; it would be
measured in days, not months. He also said
there is not a signed document on any topic.
We still have two groups involved in the
process, he added. Timing is one of the
things that both the buyer and the seller are
working through, so its just impossible to say

depth of the field with Rhodes taking sec-
ond and junior Carly Hilvert taking third.
That sealed the meet, Ferdinand said of
Hilverts third-place finish. Those are huge
points for us.
With two Caada teammates who arent
playing in the tournament, Catherine
Paonessa and Karyn Bechtel, making the
trip simply to lend moral support, Berg is
getting precisely what she was looking for
when she decided to return to school, choos-
ing Caada specifically because of the ten-
nis team, she said.

earned a close 87-81 win coupled with

Sophomore Nate Feix proved a jet-setter
in returning to the Bay Area to claim two
wins. Over the weekend, Feix was in
Oceanside competing with the Half Moon
Bay club surfing team in the state champi-
onships at Oceanside Harbor Beach. His
three-man team including Nick Wiley of
Lincoln High School-SF and Clay Johnson
of Mount Shasta High School advanced
past Saturdays first round before getting
knocked off by powerhouse San Clemente.
That didnt prevent Feix from competing
in four events Thursday, taking first in the
100 fly in a convincing win in 59.99 sec-
onds. He also teamed for a victory in the
200 medley relay with North Cossman,
Tomas Castro and Tanner Islander.
When I got in the pool, I was feeling
sore, but I went a little faster, Feix said. I
guess I felt better than I thought I did.
An all-around water baby, Feix also com-
petes with the HMB boys water polo team.
He was the varsity Cougars top sophomore
this season, playing as one of the first subs
off the bench and earning the teams Most
Improved Player award.

Myles Garrett was the consensus
best player in the NFL draft, and
Cleveland made sure he didnt go
anywhere else.
Although their biggest need
remains a franchise quarterback,
the Browns selected Texas A&Ms
defensive standout first overall, a
pick that had been projected for
weeks.
Following a dismal 1-15 season,
the Browns are counting on Garrett
and this draft Sashi Brown, the
clubs vice president of football
operations called it momentous
last week to kick-start their
turnaround and possibly end years
of football folly for a once-proud
franchise. With two first-round
picks, two in the second round and
one in the third, the Browns have
the assets to improve, and possi-
bly to find that elusive QB after
starting 26 since 1999.
But thats been the hope before
and years of blown draft picks,
particularly in the first round, have
hampered the team from making
any significant progress.
Garrett, a freakish athlete who
has been accused of sometimes
taking plays off, could help
change that. Cleveland has lacked
a dominant defensive player, the
kind who can change a game with a
sack or punishing hit.

Central Coast Section tournament that
begins in a couple weeks.
Both Reznik and Shafaie got off to slow
starts as they both had to adjust to the wind
howling for the entire match. Shafaie
whipped a couple of eyebrow-raising passing
shots on the run early in the first set as he
built a 3-1 lead, breaking Reznik in the fourth
game.
Reznik, however, came back to break and
then hold serve to tie the set at 3 as Shafaies
ground stroke troubles started to crop up
when he made several unforced errors.
Reznik won a third game in a row, breaking
Shafaies serve for the second straight time,
but Shafaie broke right back to tie the match
at 4.
Rezniks third service break of the set put
the first set on his racket and he did not let it
get away, using a service winner to punctuate
the first-set victory, 6-4.
I think we were both really tight in the
beginning, Reznik said. The first set, it
was tough to get going.
Shafaie held serve to start the second set,
but Reznik got back to his breaking ways
after holding his own serve and breaking
Shafaies serve for the fourth time in the
match. Reznik eventually built his lead to 5-
2 before Shafaie won two games in a row to
stave off elimination.
But he couldnt quite get over the hump as
Reznik won on his serve.
I thought I played pretty good today, over-
all, Shafaie said. Im happy qualifying for
CCS. But I didnt play as well today as I did
[Wednesday in beating Davison]. [Reznik]
did a better job attacking in the conditions
than I did.
The third-place singles match between Half
Moon Bays Davison and M-As Timmy
Berthier featured the present and future of PAL
tennis. Davison, a senior, was looking for a
fourth straight top-3 finish in the PAL tourna-
ment. He finished second his freshman year
and was third his sophomore. He won the sin-
gles title last year and by virtue of his 6-1, 6-
4 win over Berthier, he added another third-
place finish to his PAL resume.
Berthier was not quite at 100 percent men-
tally for the match, however. Because of an
accident on Highway 101, Berthier was 15
minutes late, finally running up to the courts
at 4 p.m. in flip-flops. He and Davison took
the court where Berthier donned socks and ten-
nis shoes, went through a quick warmup and
took his place on the baseline ready or not.
Playing against the hard-hitting Davison,
Berthier was not quite on his game and
Davison took advantage, winning the first
set 6-1.
In the second set, Berthier finally found his
game and stayed close, trading big, booming
baseline bombs with Davison. The two
stayed on serve the first three games before
Davison got a break and a hold to take a 3-1
lead. He maintained that service break and
went to win the second 6-4 and take third
place.
Terrible traffic, Berthier said of his late
arrival. The first set, I was definitely not on
my A game. The second set, I got into way
more.
Only a sophomore, Berthier is looking for
bigger things in his future, with a goal of
winning this tournament at some point over
the next two years.
The top four guys were all incredible,
Berthier said. Im extremely happy (with my
showing).
In the third-place doubles match, M-A made
it a doubles sweep, as Jake Andrew and
Camilo Sauressig beat Hillsdales Lucas
Rosenberg and Ben Liao in straight sets, 6-1,
6-4.
Despite the loss, the Hillsdale duo was just
happy to be playing on the last day of the
PAL season.
[Hillsdale] is not known for having a good
tennis team, so its nice to be one of the top
(doubles) teams, Liao said.
Rosenberg and Liao served as the Knights
top two singles players this season before
teaming up to play doubles in the PAL tourna-
ment. It was the first time either had played
doubles in a match that counted.
Weve been playing singles all season
long, Rosenberg said. Its nice to team up
and play doubles. This is our first time play-
ing (doubles) matches.
But for Rosenberg, just being out on the
tennis court was a win, as far as he was con-
cerned.
Just getting out and playing (is worth it),
Rosenberg said. I just love playing tennis.

we were fortunate to get our hands on late in
the first round.
Conley started every game over the past
two years at Ohio State and allowed oppos-
ing quarterbacks to complete just 37 percent
of their throws in his direction. The 6-foot,
195-pound junior had six interceptions in
three seasons including four in 2016 while
playing almost strictly on the outside.
The pick addresses Oaklands lack of
depth in the secondary. Starters Sean Smith
and David Amerson had up-and-down years
in 2016 and the Raiders dont have much
in the slot after declining to pick up the
option year on DJ Haydens contract this
offseason.
Smith struggled in his first season with
the Raiders and could be expendable depend-
ing on how quickly Conley adjusts to the
pro level. Smith, who was benched in Week
1 and was a constant target on the NFLs
24th-ranked pass defense, is due to earn $5
million in base salary in 2017 and could

Raiders drafted in the first round and the

Lynch, as a Stanford graduate, is quite

around the program in recent years and even
took a class on decision-making with
Thomas where they collaborated on a proj-

I was star struck the first day of class,
Thomas said. I tried to cling on to him,
learn from him. It was a really cool experi-
ence to be in class with him.

then and now he wants to make Lynch proud
as his first draft pick ever as a general man-

Green garlic butter brings spring to oysters

My grilled oysters with green garlic
butter dish looks as green and springy
as your backyard at this time of year.
You may be familiar with the flavors
in this butter from the classic french
escargots a la bourguignonne. And, if I
was a betting woman, Id be willing to
bet that 90 percent of folks who love
snails love this dish because of the rich
green garlicky butter. Thats definitely
my fascination with it. But this butter
isnt just for escargots it makes
amazing grilled oysters and the ultimate
garlic bread.
If you are digging your own oysters,
you may still want to heed the no R
months advice of not eating oysters dur-
ing the months of May through August,
those months without an R in the
name.
But if you are buying oysters from a
fish store or the grocery store, you can
feel free to eat oysters all year long as
they are more than likely being com-
mercially raised and they are safe. In
fact, my favorite time of year to eat
grilled oysters is spring and early sum-
mer.
I like to grill oysters on the half shell
which makes for both a pretty presenta-
tion and failsafe cooking. The tough
shell protects the delicate oysters from
the hot fire, tempering the heat and
transferring it through the shell. The
oyster simmers in its own juices mixed
with the cooking liquid from a marinade,
sauce or compound butter. This is just
the right temperature, and will not result
in overcooked, rubbery oysters unless
you leave them on the grill too long.

Green Garlicky Butter (see recipe
below)
Hot Sauce for serving
Lemon wedges for serving
Prepare a gas or charcoal grill for
medium direct heat.
Line a sheet pan with the bottom oys-
ter shells from the shucked oysters. Top
each oyster with a generous spoonful of
the oyster liquor (liquid that the oysters
are packed in) and the green garlic but-
ter.
Place oysters directly on the cooking
grates. Cover the grill and cook until
butter is melted and liquid is bubbling,
about 2-3 minutes. You can tell if the
oysters are cooked if they are opaque and

Sweet, delicious burrata and prosciutto pizza

If you havent had the chance to try burra-
ta, I would be honored if this recipe became
the first occasion. Burrata is a semisoft,
white Italian cheese made from mozzarella
and cream. It is like the silkiest, creamiest
fresh mozzarella, with a rich molten cream
filling as a bonus.
And here it is paired with another Italian
culinary triumph, prosciutto. Prosciutto is a
ham made from selected legs of pork, slow
cured with sea salt. The end product is sweet
and delicious, with a wonderful texture.
Prosciutto aged for 12 months will be less
expensive and have a more delicate flavor
and softer texture, while more aged pro-
sciuttos will be denser and deeper in taste.
This pizza is made without tomato sauce,
which allows the flavor of the burrata and
the cured ham to shine, punctuated by the
herby oregano. The prosciutto isnt
cooked, but rather just draped over the fin-
ished pizza, where it is gently warmed, pre-
serving its texture and singular flavor.
You can use any store-bought pizza
dough. If you can find the super-convenient
type that is rolled up in a tube in the dairy
aisle, it will save you some stretching and
pulling, which can be fun but takes a bit
longer.

Place a baking sheet in the oven and pre-
heat the oven to 425 F.
Sprinkle the cornmeal on a flat cutting
board or a pizza peel if you have one, and
stretch and pat the dough into a circle about
8 inches in diameter. Let it sit for several
minutes, then stretch it a bit further, into a
10-inch circle.
Allow it to rest between gentle pulls until
it holds its shape and remains about 1/3-
inch thick. Brush the top lightly with olive
oil.
Remove the hot baking sheet from the
oven and swiftly slide the pizza dough onto
the baking sheet. Bake the dough for about
10 minutes until it is fairly firm and lightly
browned, but not cooked through.
Remove the pizza from the oven. Tear the
burrata into small pieces and distribute
them over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch
border. Return to the oven and bake until
the dough is cooked through and the burrata
is melted, about five more minutes.
Remove from the oven, then drape the
slices of prosciutto over the top of the
pizza, allowing the burrata to peek through.
Sprinkle the oregano leaves over the top,
and season with salt and a nice grind of
black pepper to finish. Cut in wedges to
serve.

San Mateo. Its the second major transac-
tion the company has made in the city this
year alone, having recently sold a Concar
Drive office complex for $50 million more
than it paid two years earlier, according to
records filed with the county.
It closed on the downtown office space
earlier this month, paying $835 a square
foot for the fully leased property.
In a press release, Divco highlighted its
interest calling the centrally located down-
town Class A office building a best-in-
class asset.
Situated just one block from downtown
San Mateos Caltrain station, the 88,000-
square-foot, six-story building sits in a
walkable neighborhood surrounded by
many retail and restaurant amenities. Close
proximity to Caltrain service and easy
access to several freeways puts employees
from San Francisco and residential loca-
tions throughout Silicon Valley, the com-
pany said in the release.
The property has a stronghold of tenants
and has averaged 99 percent occupancy over
the last 10 years, according to the company.
Current tenants include United American
Bank, Merrill Lynch, Acacia Capital
Corporation and Jump. Its also one of the
few large Class A office buildings in down-
town, according to Divco.
Following its acquisition, the company is
expected to bring the rents up to market rate
as its time to negotiate tenant leases.
San Mateo officials and developers have
long noted the shortage of larger office
spaces in the bustling downtown where var-
ious startups have ventured. The limited
stock has prompted developers to propose
new projects, including on the periphery of
the citys main business district such as
along El Camino Real and Claremont Street.
So far this year, downtown San Mateos
office space has hovered around 6 percent
vacancy rate, with a slight uptick last
month, according to data from Colliers
have been a little over $5 a square foot, with
a slight dip in March from the month
before, according to Colliers.
Divco may have taken note of its recent
success in the San Mateo office market in
deciding to buy the Ellsworth Avenue build-
ing.
Last month, Divco sold a three-building
office complex at 700-900 Concar Drive for
$179.5 million, according to documents
filed with the county. Rakuten, a Japanese e-
commerce company and also one of the ten-
ants, bought the site totally nearly 210,000
square feet of Class A office space.
Divco had acquired the property thats
also home to a Salesforce office overlook-
ing Highway 101 near the State Route 92
intersection, in February 2015 for $130.5
million. Thats an almost $50 million or 38
percent increase in valuation after just two
years.
Divcos initial 2015 purchase raised the
property valuation to $619 per square foot,
and its sale last month to Rakuten went for
$854 per square foot.
That area near the Hayward Park Caltrain
300,000 square feet of new Class A office
spaces as Hines finishes its 400-450
Concar Drive office buildings.
The city also benefits from the property
sales as San Mateo has its own property
transfer tax. More than $1.5 million will go
to the city from the 2015 and 2017 sales of
the 700-900 Concar Drive buildings.
Divcos recent purchase of 101 S. Ellsworth
will also contribute another $367,500 to
the city.
With the recent action, Divco appears to
remain confident in the Peninsulas red-hot
real estate market. The investment company
was extremely active during a six-month
period leading up to its purchase of the
Concar site. In late 2014, it purchased
450,000 square feet of office space at 1400-
1500 Seaport Blvd. in Redwood City; and
followed with acquiring the 111,500-square-
foot Century Plaza at 1065 E. Hillsdale in
Foster City.
It also oversees commercial properties in
South San Francisco, Menlo Park, Palo Alto
and other Bay Area cities, according to its
website.

They have to be out of their current loca-
tion by May 15, and cant start remodeling
the new place until theyve raised about
$150,000. Thus far theyve raised about
$63,500, mostly from small donations for
which theyre grateful, she said.
The independent, truly no-kill shelter
had a good run at its current Rolison Road
location where it generally rehabilitates
and finds homes for between 100 and 125
cats every month, she said. But after nine
years no pun intended their life at
this location is coming to an end.
After facing a drastic rent increase, the

the potential the new facility holds, espe-

need to be rebuilt from scratch.
In the meantime, theyre focused on rais-

for the cats in their care. This Saturday and
Sunday is the last weekend they will adopt
cats at their current locale before temporar-
ily shutting down as part of their count-
down to closure.
Nine Lives had already relocated its clin-
ic, which offers low-cost spay and neuter,
as well as vaccine and flea control servic-
es, to Jefferson Avenue where it will
remain, she said.
The current 5,000-square-foot location
can hold about 400 cats, and the new site is
just 1,800 square feet and expected to hold
about 100 to 125. But as they rotate cats
quickly, shes confident it will work out media sites.

Rudiger said, noting having worked at
other shelters she was troubled to see how
many animals were euthanized if they were
not deemed adoptable.
Theres no other place that does that,
there isnt any other place that gives every
cat a chance, regardless of their medical or
physical state, she said.
The shelter made local headlines after
treating and rehabilitating a kitten named
Smurf. The cat was rescued after being
found dyed purple and covered in bite
wounds and lacerations. Smurf, and com-
panion Wanda, are now happy and healthy
featured prominently on Nine Lives social
While the goal is to find as many forever
homes as possible for the dozens of felines
seeking foster homes for those that arent
adopted, Rudiger said.
The cats will likely need to be fostered
for about four or five months, and Nine
Lives will take care of any related medical
costs during that time at its Jefferson
Avenue clinic, she said. So if anyone has
or is considering whether having a cat
companion is right for them, nows a per-
fect opportunity to try and help out Nine
Lives.
I think the foster option is a really good
option for someone whos on the fence,
she said. Some people just arent sure
they want to have the commitment of a cat,
so a foster situation is great. You take it
into your house and love on it and bring it
back of its not a good fit. Nows the time
to try.
