P4554
“From award-winning author Andrew X. Pham, a son’s memoir of his Vietnamese father’s experiences over the 2008
course of three wars. Once wealthy landowners, Thong Van Pham’s family was shattered by the tumultuous events
of the twentieth century: the festering French occupation of Indochina, the Japanese invasion during World War II,
and the Vietnam War. Told in chapters that alternate between events in the past and those closer to the present,
the book re-creates the trials of everyday life in Vietnam as endured by one man, from the fall of Hanoi and the
collapse of French colonialism to the frenzied evacuation of Saigon. Pham offers a rare portal into a lost world as he
chronicles Thong Van Pham’s heartbreaks, triumphs, and bizarre reversals of fortune, whether as a South
Vietnamese soldier pinned down by enemy fire, a prisoner of the North Vietnamese under brutal interrogation, or a
refugee desperately trying to escape Vietnam after the last American helicopter has abandoned Saigon.” -- Publisher

The Fate of Africa: from the Hopes of Freedom to the Heart of Despair: a History of Fifty Years of Independence / DT Non-fiction;
Martin Meredith. New York: Public Affairs, 2005. 30.5 752 p.
.M455
Presents a narrative of the last fifty years of African history, analyzing the factors which account for the political 2005
chaos, financial troubles, and civil wars which prevail in many African countries today.
Fleeing Hitler: France 1940 / Hanna Diamond. Oxford; New York: Oxford University Press, 2007. D Non-fiction;
809 255 p.
In France, it is called l'exode, or "exodus": the flight from their homes of up to seven million residents before and .F7
during the German invasion of the country in May and June 1940 …. Diamond … combed dozens of memoirs and D53
diaries … for this first major study in English. She notes a number of reasons for the mass internal migration, 2007
including a belief in the "atrocity propaganda" about Germany from WWI; fears that the Germans would bomb Paris
and other cities; a desire to avoid working for the Nazi war machine; and the flight of the French government itself
from Paris. She captures how an initial "holiday spirit" gave way to a sense of displacement, loss and
impoverishment for some and separation of families. Diamond also shows how the host communities,
predominantly in France's south and west, often were overwhelmed by a doubling or tripling of their populations
virtually overnight. Perhaps most important and interesting is her exploration of how Marshall Pétain exploited the
exodus to discredit the government of the Third Republic. While Diamond's treatment of some topics … is cursory,
this is a solid work on a socially convulsive episode of WWII. –Publishers Weekly review, April 9, 2007

From Africa to America: the Journey of a Lost Boy of Sudan / Joseph Akol Makeer. Mustang, OK: Tate Publishing & DT Non-fiction;
Enterprises, 2008. 157.673  96 p.
.M34
Author Joseph Akol Makeer visited the BSC campus in the Spring of 2010 and now lives in Fargo. His book is about 2008
his experiences as one of the lost boys of Sudan.

“Recent news media have exposed the horrific genocides in Rwanda, Darfur, and elsewhere, but little has been
publicized about the unseen genocide committed by Muslims against millions of Christians in southern Sudan during
the 1980s. From Africa to America: The Journey of a Lost Boy of Sudan provides a firsthand account of the atrocities
caused by the same president and government committing genocide in Darfur today. Look through the eyes of one
of the Lost Boys, a group of orphans who braved a dangerous trek through desert and jungle in order to flee the war-
torn southern Sudan twenty years ago, as author Akol Makeer explains Sudanese cultural traditions and chronicles
his life before and after the war. From Africa to America: The Journey of a Lost Boy of Sudan records years of human
rights violations and bloodshed, the conversion of southern Sudanese from animism to Christianity during the war,
the corruption of U.N. officials, and the sixteen-year journey of the Lost Boys from Sudan to Ethiopia, on to Kenya,
and finally to religious and political freedom in America.” – Google Books

God Grew Tired of Us / John Bul Dau, with Michael S. Sweeney. Washington, DC: National Geographic, c2007. HV Non-fiction;
640.5 287 p.
“This unforgettable book is the first-person account of a miracle—indeed, a whole series of miracles. A tale of .S9
suffering, tragedy, and sorrow redeemed by indomitable resolve and a stubborn refusal to despair, it's set in a Sudan D29
shadowed by unrelenting war and ruthless violence, yet illuminated by faith, generosity, and steadfast commitment 2007
to the human spirit's finest instincts … One of the uprooted youngsters known as the Lost Boys of Sudan, John Bul
Dau was 12 years old when civil war ravaged his village and shattered its age-old society … As tracer bullets split the
night and mortar shells exploded around him, John fled into the darkness—the first terrified moments of a journey
that would lead him thousands of miles into an exile that was to last many years. John's memoir … shows African life
and values at their best, while his searing account of hardship, famine, and war also testifies to human resilience and
kindness. In an era of cultural clashes, his often humorous stories of adapting to life in the United States offer proof
that we can bridge our differences peacefully. John Bul Dau's quiet pride, true humility, deep seriousness,
compassionate courage, and remarkable achievements will take every reader’s breath away.” – Google Books

“Hirsi Ali (The Caged Virgin) first came to the world's attention with the gunning down of filmmaker Theo van Gogh .H57
in Amsterdam by a Muslim extremist. A note pinned to van Gogh threatened Hirsi Ali's life for collaborating with him A3
on Submission, a short film criticizing Muslims for wife beating and forced marriages. In this memoir, the Somalian- 2007
born author tells of her journey to Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, undergoing genital mutilation, being schooled
by strict Muslim teachers, and finally facing shame from her family and clan for turning against Islam. In her early
twenties, she sought asylum in the Netherlands after escaping an arranged marriage. In Holland, the cleanliness,
order, and freedom amazed her; she couldn't believe that a government could help its people and was not feared.
As she adjusted to her new home, learning Dutch, attending university, acquiring citizenship, and eventually working
as a translator for social services, she spoke out publicly, criticizing the Muslim treatment of women … A clearly
written and fascinating account of exceptional courage, this book is essential for all libraries.”—Library Journal

The Lost Boys of Sudan: an American Story of the Refugee Experience / Mark Bixler. Athens: University of Georgia HV Non-fiction;
Press, c2005. 640.4 261 p.
.S73
In 2001, four young men who had first fled the Sudanese civil war, left East African refugee camps to begin a new life B59
in the modern sprawl of Atlanta. Bixler, a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, covered their emigration for 2005
the paper, and here recounts their extraordinary stories. Thousands of young men, displaced by the war and separated
from their families, have come to be called the "Lost Boys" of Sudan after Peter Pan's orphans. Selected by the State
Department for resettlement in the U.S., Jacob, Peter, Daniel and Marko had not seen a light switch before their
arrival. Bixler chronicles their earnest attempts at cultural orientation and their intimate relationships with volunteers
who donated time and money. While lively and even entertaining, the book does not simply tug heartstrings with
touching anecdotes. A recurring theme is the emigres' intense struggle for a basic education; they and other refugees
"could not understand why the government seemed to have brought them without a plan for their education." The
book does not ignore the pitfalls and politics of refugee resettlement, which are especially complicated since 9/11, but
Bixler's perspective is optimistic. He also provides essential background, including a crash course on U.S. refugee
policy and a short history of Sudan.” -- Editorial Review , Reed Business Information, March 14, 2005

The Mission (Die Mission): a Novel / Hans Habe; translated from the German by Michael Bullock. New York: PT Fiction;
Coward-McCann, 1966. 2615 319 p.
.A18
Hans Habe's novel … was intended to be a reminder of the nearly forgotten Évian Conference of 1938. The purpose M5313
of the conference … was to discuss the Jewish refugee problem, which had become even more urgent with the 1966
German annexation of Austria. Fascist Germany refused to participate but suggested unofficially that it was willing to
sell the freedom of Jews. … Habe reported on the conference throughout July 1938 … Prior to the conference he had
learned about the mission of Neumann … and the novel was meant to be a tribute to him. From an artistic
standpoint Habe's intent was to give to this singular event a universal significance. At the time he was working on a
cycle of novels that dealt with the cardinal virtues and the deadly sins, and he devoted The Mission to the "lethargy
of the heart," the sin he believed to be the most significant. In the epilogue to the novel he wonders, "Does a man
whose heart is too sluggish to stop the wheel of disaster become an accomplice of the disaster?" His answer is yes,
for guilt, he concludes, is always individual. While there may not be collective guilt, there is, however, collective
complicity: "The bad happens because it is quietly tolerated by the good ..." —Walter Schmitz

Tales of Two Cities : a Persian Memoir / Abbas Milani. Washington, D.C.: Mage, 2006. DS Non-fiction;

“Tales of Two Cities is an engrossing, cross-cultural memoir of revolution and exile. It is the story of a fifteen year-old .M55
Persian boy sent for his education from an old-world, pre-oil boom Tehran, to the new-world, avant-garde San 2006
Francisco of the 1960s. Abbas Milani richly chronicles his education, politicization, return to Iran, disillusionment and
eventual exile. Interwoven with the brisk narrative is a loving account of the traditional Iran of the author's
childhood; a searing memoir of a lost generation of Iranians torn apart by revolution and exile, a graphic portrait of
the author's time in the shah's jail and of his cellmates, the mullahs who would soon emerge as the new leaders of
the Islamic Republic. Tales of Two Cities is not only the odyssey of one intellectual doomed to exile, but also a
message of hope and ultimately salvation for the increasing number of people forced to leave their homeland and

“As gunshots, flames, and screams engulfed their village, three cousins fled into the cover of the forest. Every step 2005
led the boys away from their peaceful, agrarian world … With each footstep they were drawn deeper into the
horrific violence of Sudan's civil war: a world of bombed-out villages, mine-sown roads, and relentless desert, a
world where starving adults would snatch the grain from a weak child's fingers. Across Sudan, between 1987 and
1989, tens of thousands of young boys took flight from these massacres. Their journey led them first to Ethiopia and
then, driven back into Sudan, toward Kenya. They walked nearly one thousand miles, sustained only by the sheer will
to live. This book is the three boys' account of that unimaginable journey.” -- Publisher description.

A Thousand Sisters: My Journey into the Worst Place on Earth to Be a Woman / Lisa J. Shannon; foreword by HQ Non-fiction;
Zainab Salbi. Berkeley, Calif.: Seal Press: Distributed by Publishers Group West, c2010. 1805.5  335 p.
.S53
The subject of a recent New York Times column by Nicholas Kristof, Shannon details how she left her comfortable 2010
life in Portland, Ore., to aid women in the Democratic Republic of Congo suffering abuse and death in what has been
termed “Africa's First World War.” Running a successful business with her fiancée (who would leave her), Shannon is
still “hungry for something all [her] own” and after seeing a show on Oprah about Congolese women, she establishes
the Run for Congo Women to raise money to help those suffering. From meeting Congolese women she's sponsored
to learning that 90% of the women in one village have been raped, Shannon is exposed to a world remote from her
own affluent life. Her painful firsthand accounts of the violence inflicted upon Congolese women by Hutu militants
will most interest readers, but the book lacks a detailed overview of the political circumstances surrounding this long
war. Shannon provides a much-needed view of how one inspired American can act with hope, drive, and courage to
aid women in a part of the world too often overlooked. “ -- Editorial Review, Publishers Weekly, Feb. 22, 2010

“It is said that in war heaven and earth change places not once, but many times. When Heaven and Earth Changed A3
Places is the haunting memoir of a girl on the verge of womanhood in a world turned upside down. The youngest of 1990
six children in a close-knit Buddhist family, Le Ly Hayslip was twelve years old when U.S. helicopters landed in Ky La,
her tiny village in central Vietnam. As the government and Viet Cong troops fought in and around Ky La, both sides
recruited children as spies and saboteurs. Le Ly was one of those children. Before the age of sixteen, Le Ly had
suffered near-starvation, imprisonment, torture, rape, and the deaths of beloved family members -- but
miraculously held fast to her faith in humanity. And almost twenty years after her escape to America, she was drawn
inexorably back to the devastated country and family she left behind. Scenes of this joyous reunion are interwoven

In 1940, Varian Fry, a young American magazine editor, traveled to France to work as a representative of the Emergency
Rescue Committee, a group that offered aid to political refugees in France who were in danger of being extradited to
Germany. With the aid of the French government, the Germans were then in the process of creating what Fry calls "the
most gigantic man-trap in history." Associating himself necessarily with shady characters who could get things done,
including a few double agents and gangsters, Fry managed, during a stay of 13 months, to win the freedom of some 1,500
men and women, among them painters Marc Chagall, Marcel Duchamp, and Max Ernst; dissidents Andre Breton and Victor
Serge; writer Franz Werfel; musician Wanda Landowska; and other intellectuals and artists. His memoir, Surrender on
