Eastenders Kat and Alfie trailer

Our soap Virgin Airways trailer

1. In our soap opera trailer we have chosen to begin the trailer with a close up of a woman wearing
red heels. We got our inspiration for starting the trailer with a pair of female legs from the
Eastenders Kat and Alfie return trailer where it begins with a pair of black cowboy boots; the black
cowboy boots stick with the theme of the trailer to suggest that Kat is the new boss in town. We
liked the idea of beginning the trailer with the legs as this would target our male audience and would
attract them to watch the soap opera from the beginning of the trailer. We also sought inspiration
from the Virgin Airways 25 year anniversary advert, this advert features a close up on a females legs
and she is wearing red heels, the red is in keeping with the Virgin Airways colour scheme, it is also
used to sexualise the woman and make her attractive. We also used this convention in our trailer to
further sexualise the female character to attract our male target audience. We made sure to make
use of Laura Mulvey͛s Male Gaze theory which sexualises women to attract a larger male audience.

2. After the close up of the red heels, we chose to pan up the females body to reveal how attractive
she is, we got this idea from the Eastenders Kat and Alfie trailer where after the tracking of the
cowboy boots, the camera pans up to reveal Kat. She is dressed in black to connote power and
sexiness and we have similarly dressed our main character in black to further sexualise her. Like in
the Eastenders trailer, we have also used the first shot with nobody to be seen around and this puts
the focus straight on the female character. The Eastenders trailer is sexualising Kat in order to attract
more male audience members and we are striving to do the same.

3. We featured a mid shot of a group of men leering at our main character to further promote her
sexiness and also to spotlight her. We got this idea from the Eastenders Mitchell Sisters trailer where
Gary and Minty are lusting over Ronnie and Roxy, similarly in this trailer Ronnie is wearing red to
connote her sexiness. We have included this convention as we are aiming to attract many male
audience members by sexualising Helen. We have also decided to have these boys outside the local
pub, and in the Eastenders trailer the men are in a pub. A pub is an iconic convention of many soap
operas and in our soap we hope this pub will be the centre of all the drama as it is in many real soap
operas like Eastenders and Coronation Street which are the two most viewed soap operas.

4. We have decided to add gossiping women to our trailer who are in shock upon seeing the main
character, this is to show how she is new and the residents are distracted by her and also that
women are envious of her. We got this idea from the Eastenders Kat and Alfie trailer where Janine
and Pat are talking and are both distracted and shocked upon seeing Kat. We also got the idea from
the Virgin Airways trailer where the two women are shocked upon seeing the women in red and are
jealous of them. Gossiping women are common conventional characters found in soap operas and
by using these characters we are sticking to the typical soap opera conventions. In the Eastenders
Kat and Alfie trailer, the gossiping women are standing in their street as if just passing by and talking
each other, we have also used this street convention in our trailer as it like many other soap operas
set in a small village.

5. We have also featured various close ups and mid shots of people going about their daily business
and being distracted and in awe of the new character, we got this idea from the Eastenders trailer
where Max is distracted when drinking his coffee and is looking over at Kat in awe. Similarly, we
liked the idea in the Virgin Airways trailer where a male on his phone stops his conversation as he is
unable to talk where he is in awe of the women. This is the effect we would like to have on our male
audience members so that they will be in awe and will want to watch the soap opera, we have
mainly tried to achieve this by using Laura Mulvey͛s Male Gaze theory which is also used in both
trailers to sexualise the female characters and is used in many real trailers and adverts in order to
attract male audience members.

6. We have featured a mid shot of a wife catching her husband looking over at the new woman and
then slapping him, we used this to add comedy to the trailer and to emphasise how attractive the
new woman is. We got our inspiration from the Eastenders trailer where there is a close up of Honey
looking disgusted after she catches Billy looking over at Ronnie and Roxy. The slap is an overdramatic
slap and this is found in many soap operas to add comedy and shock to the audience members.

7. We have chosen to end our trailer with an establishing shot with all the characters in the trailer
surrounding the three new characters, this is to spotlight the main characters and highlight their
significance. Similarly on the Virgin Airways trailer, the women are all surrounded by the pilots and
are swarmed with photographers and journalists to connote their power and significance. We have
also used it to show how we have many conventional soap opera characters like the Jack the lad and
the love rat and that they are all in a small village where most soap operas are set.
