ABOUT THE DISASTERS On 10 March 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Shiming Village of
Yingjiang County, Dehong Prefecture in Yunnan Province, China, resulting in 25 deaths, 314
injuries, 127,100 evacuees and estimated direct economic losses of RMB 2.7 billion (USD 400
million). A total of 18,445 houses were destroyed and 55,345 seriously damaged. World Vision
China distributed quilts, hygiene kits and child-friendly kits to meet victims’ immediate needs.

On 11 March 2011, Japan’s northeastern coast was hit by a massive 9.0 magnitude
earthquake and a 7-metre high tsunami. International aid group World Vision has declared
the earthquake-tsunami a Category 3, Level 3 emergency – which is the highest rating in
terms of the scale and scope of response, and is appealing globally for USD$10 million to
meet the critical needs of desperate survivors.

On 24 March 2011, Myanmar was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that significantly
destroyed water infrastructure, storage materials and pipe networks. World Vision Myanmar
has launched an appeal for US$746,292 to cover two months of relief operations as
thousands of earthquake survivors in the eastern Shan State in Myanmar need immediate
support to get safe water.
