1. PURPOSE

This SOP details the procedures of new lab member training, and also highlights some of safety precautions in working in Dr. Cynthia Hes laboratory. 2. SCOPE This SOP is applicable to all research staff, research students, technical staff working in the laboratory. 3. RESPONSIBILITY 3.1 It is the responsibility of the PI in conjunction with the lab technologist and the lab research assistant to ensure that the procedures are done whenever new lab member joins. It is the responsibility of the PI in conjunction with the laboratory I/C to ensure that all research and technical staff and graduate students working in the lab are adequately trained.

PROCEDURES

SOPI: At the office


1. The PI or the senior member that conducts the training will explain the scope of work, the projects and the associated risks to the new member. In particular, the biology and the risk factor of Trypanosoma brucei will be explained in great details. 2. Information on where and how to access SOPs, MSDS, chemical inventories etc will be briefed to the new member. 3. The safety training checklist will also be used, to explain the training procedure. New member will be helped and urged to sign up all relevant trainings at the soonest available dates.

SOPII: At the door to the lab


1. Point out to new member that this is a BSL-2 laboratory where chemicals and biological agents such as E. coli, yeast and Trypanosoma brucei are used.

2. Identify clean areas and the area where specific personal protective equipment (PPE) are needed. The meaning of the signs on doors and walls must be explained. 3. New members are required to wear lab coat and covered shoes before entering the lab area.

SOPIII: Inside the laboratory


1. Areas for different types of work- tissue culture, microscopy, chemicals, electrophoresis, PCR, centrifugation, etc will be identified to new member. 2. Areas for chemical storage, flammable agent storage, poison storage, acid storage will be identified to new member. 3. Areas for garbage disposal (regular, organic, acid, explosive, poisonous etc) will be identified to new member. 4. Locations of chemical/biology spill kits, emergency shower/eye wash, first aid kit, fire Extinguishers, emergency escape route will be shown to the new comer. 5. Finally, the emergency contact numbers will be shown to the new member. These include the lab and the PIs emergency contacts.

SOPIV: Follow ups


1. New members are required to update the lab manager with information on the safety trainings completed, so the safety training checklist will be updated. 2. PI and other senior members of the lab will help the new member to follow the safety rules and will address any questions he/she may have.

When experiments begin, the RA for each experiment will be explained to the new members by the mentor (PI or any senior member assigned by the PI). The new member will thus be reminded of the safety procedures. At group meetings, PI will inform the lab on any important safety issues that are of general importance.
