Please Check My Babys Heart

Id like my newborn screened with pulse oximetry after 24 hours of life.

About one in 100 babies have a heart defect. While I know the chances are good my baby does not have a defect, I would like my baby to have pulse oximetry screening, following the protocols outlined in the journal Pediatrics. (Link at bottom of this page). Pulse oximetry screening is the standard of care in many hospitals. Because screening is most effective if baby is calm, I would like to hold my baby while you do this if possible. If the oxygen saturation is below 95%, protocols suggest the screening be repeated in a few hours. I understand low saturation does not mean a heart defect is definitely present. I also understand that some babies with heart defects will pass this screening, so I would like to talk to you about the signs and symptoms of a heart issue like turning blue, trouble feeding and heavy breathing.
