THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL PART 2

What are the benefits of the new translation?

First, the new translation conveys more fully the rich biblical images and allusions in the Latin original. It also preserves the traditional theological terms that are important to pass down in our worship. Secondly, the new translation conveys a less conversational and a more noble tone that expresses greater reverence and humility in worship. The way we worship tells us about what we believe and how we view our relationship with God. The way we pray shapes our belief. As they say in Latin, Lex orandi, lex credendi - the law of prayer is the law of belief. We do not approach God like the way we talk to another human being in a casual manner. The new translation uses language that disposes us to recognize that we are encountering the presence of the all-holy God in the sacred liturgy, and that demands greater humility, reverence and gratitude. Thirdly, the new translation is an opportunity to catechize and educate the lay people on the deeper meaning of the liturgy. This will help us understand the Eucharist as the sacrificial memorial of Christs death on the cross, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and the intimate union we have with our Lord in the Holy Communion. We will discuss the more specific parts of the Mass with changes in translation in the coming weeks. The new translation of the Mass can be reviewed online at the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), www.usccb.org/romanmissal.
