COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH October 9, 2011 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL PART 5 THE SANCTUS
Lord God of power and might to Lord God of hosts The phrase Holy, holy, Lord God of hosts originated from the Old Testament (Isaiah 6:3) where the prophet Isaiah had a vision of the angels praising God with these same words. This phrase underscores the infinite breadth of Gods power. All things in heaven and on earth are under His dominion including the angels, who adore Him unceasingly. He is truly the Lord God of hosts.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

This is the cup of my Blood is now This is the chalice of my Blood. The use of chalice instead of cup is a more formal rendering of the Latin text and it underscores the liturgical nature of the vessel. This is no ordinary cup, but the Eucharistic cup that the Lord consecrated at the Last supper (see Luke 22:20; 1 Cor. 11:25-26). For all is now For many The phrase for all refers to the blood of Jesus that has redemptive value for all. But the new translation is closer to the actual words of institution of Jesus in the gospel (Mt. 26:28) and more harmonious with the Latin text. The phrase for many may be misunderstood by some people that Jesus did not die on the cross for everyone but only for a select group of people. The new translation points out the reality that while Jesus died for all, not everyone chooses to accept his gift. Besides, Jesus language at the Last Supper about his blood being poured out for many recalls the many that is three times mentioned in Isaiah 53:11-12, where Jesus associated himself with the suffering servant figure prophesied by Isaiah. Isaiahs prophecies about the Suffering Servant of the Lord make clear that he has a universal mission, one that announces salvation to all humanity (Isaiah 42:1-10).
