ST.

COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH October 30, 2011 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
POSITION, RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY From todays first reading and the Gospel comes the important lesson of Stewardship, that God entrusted to us not only life and treasure but positions of power and responsibility. Jesus was angry at the fact that the Scribes and Pharisees, the religious leaders of his time who have the power and authority on the Word of God, did not lead the people toward God but led them astray by their bad examples. Just like the word of God spoken through the prophet Malachi, God will demand accountability from those He has entrusted with responsibility and power. We enjoy positions of power and authority, but we should never forget the great responsibilities that come with them, especially the responsibility to use the power and positions for the good of others and ultimately for the salvation of souls. REMEMBERING OUR BELOVED DEPARTED For Roman Catholics, November is not just a month for the saints. It is also the month to remember our beloved departed. While any day is a good day to remember the dead (by offering prayers and visiting their burial places), the month of November reminds us of the Mystery of Communion of Saints. This means that in the one family of God, the living and the dead are still spiritually connected, not in the way Halloween stories tell us, but united in the common direction of eternal salvation. The Saints in heaven (Church Triumphant), the souls in Purgatory (Church Suffering), and the believers on earth (Church Militant) are all part of the Family of God. This means that we who are alive pray for the dead that they may be purified of their sins and admitted into their heavenly home. We believe also that the souls of the departed, whether they are enjoying eternal bliss or still suffering in purgatory, pray for us on earth that we may be victorious against sin and be admitted to heaven when our heavenly Father calls us home.

Automated Giving
To strengthen stewardship, caring for and sharing Gods gifts and family as disciples of Christ, we request that you consider utilizing a new and easier way to support our parish...Automated Giving. What is Automated Giving? An alternative means of support for St. Columba Church instead of using envelopes. You may now make your contributions directly from your checking or savings account or with a credit card. There is NO COST to you to participate in the program. What are the benefits to me? 1. This program allows you to plan your giving in the same way you budget your other financial commitments. 2. You no longer have to be concerned about making up missed offertory donations when you are out of town, on vacation, ill, etc. 3. You can easily adjust the amount of your donation (up or down) through the secure website. 4. You no longer need to write a check and search for an envelope every week. 5. By using a credit card your donations will help you increase your credit card bonus incentives. I feel uncomfortable about not having something to physically drop in the collection basket. What should I do? Special donation slips are available in the pews for those enrolled in the program to be dropped into the collection basket, should you wish.

Scrip during Sunday coffee and donuts!

Stop by the hall after the 7:30 & 9:30 Masses to purchase select gift cards like Walmart, Target, Arco, and Vons.
