New progressive school opens in Ashburn

Thursday, Mar. 1, 2012 by Laura Peters | 6 comments | Email this story

2 Adela Taboado knows the names of all 50 students at the Primrose School in Ashburn. The new school, which opened almost four weeks ago, is slowly growing. Primrose is actually the first preschool to be accredited. We have the same type of accreditation that elementary schools, high schools and many universities have, Taboado said. Its very different, its not like a daycare accreditation. The curriculum is accredited and the quality is at the up-most quality. Taboado and her husband Victor own the franchise in Ashburn, which is one out of almost 250 schools in the country. The school centers of out Fort Worth, Texas, and is celebrating 30 years in existence. Classes start from 6-weeks-old to afternoon programs for 10-year-old children. Each classroom has a separate playground geared for each specific age. We try to put them as close together in age as much as possible, Taboado said. The school is open between 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and for their afternoon programs, Loudoun County School buses can drop students of for afternoon care, or Primrose specifically picks them up. But, Primroses main goal is to become part of the community and aims to work with various charities. The most recent one involves a dance-off contest for the next month where parents and students make dance videos online to win a cash prize and a large sum to be donated to a Childrens Miracle Network Hospital in upwards of $30,000. We partner with our families. Its more than just a school where they drop off and pick up, Heather Pearl, director of the Ashburn Primrose said. We have several parent events throughout the year. We also do collaborative community work, different work with charities. Its more than just a school, were a part of the community. Primrose generally exceeds the safety standards, Pearl added. With their progressive curriculum, their 3-year-old students are learning at a 4-year-old level and their kindergarten classes are taught at a first grade level. This has always been one of my dreams and when my husband and I decided to do this, once I came across Primrose I didnt want to do anything else, Taboado said. Its something that I wanted to be able to provide my children - had Primrose been around when they were little. This has the quality from the very onset. With big classrooms and smaller class sizes each student has about 50 square feet as opposed to the normal 35 square feet in normal classrooms with a maximum of 20 students per class. Teachers are trained in different ways, including online courses, in-house training and corporate training mixed in with collegiate training. We can kind of fill in the gaps with the Primrose training program to make sure that everyone has an understanding of all the different types of learning theories and build from that, specific to the programs they are working from, Pearl said. Students in the higher age groups spend their mornings studying literacy with a main teacher while an aide helps out and does other activities on the side with other children. The same type of rotation is done in the afternoon focusing on math and science. Three and 4-year-olds

also integrate computer learning and are taught conversational Spanish at a young age. Curriculum is provided to the teachers, Pearl says, so they can spend a good part of the day letting their personality shine through to help their students. Another distinguishing feature about Primrose is our character development program. Theres really nothing else like it, Pearl said. We have several different ways, one through the community outreach that we do as a school and as a unit. Pearl says an exercise which follows them through all their years at Primrose is something called Primroses Pals and each puppet has a specific job like promoting conservation or celebrating birthdays.

Mia is our puppet of the month and she teaches them about conservation and technology. The kids will go and pick Mia up if they see someone drop trash on the floor and use the puppet to ask them to pick it up. It becomes a familiar face as they transition forward, Pearl added. Their after school program helps out with homework, gives snacks and has different activities planned each day or certain projects they can work on together to promote social skills.

One program that is progress is an adopt a grandparent event that works with local assisted living communities, much like the Big Brother or Big Sister program. Each student would be paired with someone and they would visit them and read or do arts and crafts. The students also plan on having performances for them so they can visit the school. It seems remarkably classy for the subject of an article to write a comment for a news article. Im surprised we dont see it more often. As one of the schools neighbors, Im curious how big the school is/will get. Is 50ish students going to be the norm, or is that number just for the start?

We made the decision to enroll our child into the Kindergarten program at Primrose after meeting with Adela. As a teacher, I am extremely critical of the curriculum, behavior modification methods, screening of the teachers, etc. Adela answered all our questions and the facility has exceeded our expectations. Primrose is nothing like the other schools we have visited (Creme, Goddard, Chesterbrook, Augusta, etc). Yes, we have visited. Yes, we are overly critical. And for the person that commented about why we need a private school when the public schools in Loudoun County are so good, I have three words: Half Day Kindergarten. Our child has been in full day preschool where he receives hours of instruction over the period of a full day. Sending him to half-day Kindergarten would mean he would have less than 2 hours of instruction over the period of half a day. Such a disservice to our future. Thank you Adela and Primrose for joining our community.

Waste of Money.because it is a DAYCARE center! Since they open at 6.30am and close at 6.30 pm all parents need to do is drop off in the morning and pick up at nightthey dont even have to help with homework! The school gets to do all their parenting for them!
