DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE CRESS of Rockbridge County, Virginia Contributed by Larry Cockerham George Cress b. 1739 in York Co. PA d. 25 Feb 1823 in Gallia County, Ohio while living at the home of a son. He mustered as a 1st corporal in Capt. Samuel Ferguson's company and Colonel Walker's regiment, Pennsylvania militia. George was wounded at the battle of White Horse Tavern (Warren's Tavern) while fighting for American independence from Great Britain. After the war he settled in Augusta, Rockbridge County, Virginia. The National Archives houses his Revolutionary War pension file No. S24983. m. Christiana (maiden name unknown) ca 1761 (b. 1738 d. 30 Jul 1823 in Gallia County, Ohio) Note: The following pages concerning George Cress were taken from THE DESCENDENTS OF GEORGE CRESS BORN 1739, VOLUME II, A COMPILATION OF ALL KNOWN DESCENDENTS by Edgar A. Cress, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. LDC-1990 GEORGE CRESS AND THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR All of the Kress and Cress descendants in America are of German origin. Many of them were Palatines, who were driven from Germany because of religious persecution. Many of the early Cress immigrants spoke Dutch or Low German common to the Palatine. It is also called Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania German. Many of these immigrants arrived by ship at Philadelphia in the mid-1700s. Descendants of one Kress family remained in Pennsylvania and went on to found the Kress Five and Ten Cent store chain. Another member of this family, Johann Nicholaus Heinrich Kress (b. 1721, Germany) migrated to North Carolina, reared eleven children, who changed the name to Cress and produced many descendants there and in other parts of the country. This family traces their ancestors to Heroldus Kress (b. 1270), and to the name, Kres, 883 A.D. Our ancestor, George Cress, was born ca 1739 probably in Pennsylvania. He was possibly a son or nephew of George Philip Cress, a Palatine, who arrived at Philadelphia on December 3, 1740. Descendents of the early Cress families in Lee County, Virginia recall their forbears speaking the Dutch language. George Cress married in Pennsylvania, in 1762, Christiana --born ca 1738, Pennsylvania. Their oldest child, Nicholas Cress was born in 1762 in Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1777 George Cress was drawn into the American Revolution. Mustered at York, Pennsylvania, he was 1st Corporal in Captain Samuel Ferguson's Company, Colonel Walker's Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia. They had orders to 1

march to the defense of Philadelphia. They were engaged in small skirmishes and battles. Captain Ferguson was killed and Corporal Cress was left for dead in the Battle of White Horse (Warren) Tavern, on September 16, 1777. The next day Corporal Cress rejoined his Company, having "a bullet wound entering near his left spine, passing through his body out his left nipple" See the detailed account of the battle. His Revolutionary War pension number was S.24983. After the war George Cress came down through the valley of Virginia and established his home in Augusta County, in that part that later became Rockbridge County. George and Christiana had seven children, most of them born in Pennsylvania and possibly some, born in Virginia. On August 7, 1809 he was allowed a pension of $2.50 per month on account of disability resulting from wounds received in the service. Sometime in the fall of 1821, George Cress and his wife Christiana, now in their eighties, moved to Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio to live with their son, Henry Cress. George Cress died February 25, 1823. Christiana survived only a few months longer and died July 30, 1823. In March 1822 George Cress made a will: D.B. 11, pp. 72-73, Gallia County, Ohio. GEORGE CRESS (1739-1823), GRANDFATHER OF JAMES FLETCHER CRESS (1840-1907) AT THE BATTLE OF VALLEY FORGE

Stephen Giffin was the ensign in Captain Samuel Ferguson's Company from York County, Pennsylvania. He received a pension for his Revolutionary War service, as did his wife after he died. That file is in the National Archives, identified Rev. War Pension file W 7584. On July 1, 1835, Stephen Giffin was approaching his 82nd birthday, he was in Knox County, Ohio, and believed his pension should be greater than it was. So he made a twelve page statement before an Associate Justice of Common Pleas, Knox Co., Ohio, which became his application for an increase in his pension. What follows is an abstract from that statement. He was sworn as to the accuracy of that statement. In the later end of August in 1777 at York Co., Pa, ... he was ensign of the 4th Company of a Regiment of the Militia of York Co... of which Militia Regiment, one James Dixon was Colonel. There was at the time a draft of the militia for actual service of the first class which consisted of one eighth of the rank and file of the Regiment, One Captain (Samuel Ferguson), 2 Lieutenants (James Elliott and John Armstrong) and one ensign, which was this declarant, said Stephen Giffin. This draft was for two months to go to the defense of Philadelphia. In this draft, declarant with the other draft from his regiment constituting one company under the immediate command of the last named officers were 3

joined at York by two other drafted companies and marched in a direction of Philadelphia under the command of the drafted Colonel Walker, but in consequence of some movements of the enemy, our direction was changed at a place called "the Two Horse Wagon Stand" and we joined the rest of our drafted regiment at the town of Chester on the west side of the Delaware river. The drafted lieutenant and Major of the regiment were two dutchmen. Their names are not remembered. The adjutant was of the name of Cooper. After some days, our Regiment with the whole drafted brigade (or a large military force) under the command of General James Potter marched from Chester to Wilmington, thence to Shad's (correctly spelled Chad's) ford on Brandywine leaving Chester early in the morning of Sept. 11th, 1777, arriving at Shad's ford on the same day before the action began. Our brigade under the command of Gen. Potter and another body under the command of Gen. Smallwood (of Maryland) were placed as a Reserve Corps upon the left wing, and we were not brought into action until about 4 o'clock p.m. Declarant remembers that Gen. Sullivant at the head of our forces lead the attack. Colonel Morgan with the command of a rifle Regiment was at the right of our forces, which lay up the river from where Declarant was placed. The battle ended at dark, each party holding their side of the river. During the night after the battle we marched back to Chester. Thence in a few days we were ordered to Valley Forge. Our Regiment was the rear guard and we had orders to lye at a field near the White Horse Tavern. The next morning (PS: This would be 16 Sept. 1777, since the action was near White Horse (also called Warren) Tavern took place that day), just as we were dividing our rations, we were attacked at our encampment by the enemy. Our quarter guard was driven in. Our Regiment was in disorder and before we could get the men paraded, we received a fire. Declarant was then acting as supernumerie in the capacity of adjutant. At the second fire, our Colonel (Walker) received a shot in the arm and in a cowardly manner ordered a retreat and fled. About the same time my Captain and our Corporal (George Cress) fell; the first mortally wounded, the latter very dangerously. At my insistence, about 20 of us made an effort to carry away our wounded Captain, but we desisted at the remonstration of the dying man. We then changed our position and after getting into a situation near a fence that favored us, we (the above remnant of about 20) turned upon a body of the enemie's cavalry and fired, as we thought with considerable effect. About this time, the force of the enemy was brought to bear upon us so painfully that we followed the rest of our Regiment in its retreat to the main body of our brigade under General Potter. I there saw our wounded and as I thought cowardly colonel for the last time. His wound I saw and understood was but a slight one. Eight of our men were killed and 2 taken prisoners in the skirmish. (Corporal George Cress who was supposed to have been killed followed and joined us the next day ensuing.) We then marched on with the rest of General Potter's command, and without any fighting, drove the enemy from Valley Forge. We rested a few days at Valley Forge when we were ordered by Gen. Green to Germantown. That part of the army to which I belonged reached Germantown a little before day sometime in October. Our orders were on our approaching the enemy in Germantown to fire and rush upon the first hail of the enemie's guard, and my understanding was that our forces had been so disposed as to surprise the enemy by simultaneous and unexpected attack by all our forces. Our forces were commanded by Gen. Green and soon after the battle commenced, we succeeded in driving the enemy from the town with the exception of a body of them sheltered in a stone house, who continued to fire upon us after we had passed this stronghold. By the order of the General a portion of our forces (among whom was the declarant) changed our front and attacked the enemy in the stone house and subdued them. The morning was very foggy and this, with the smoke of the arms, obscured the scene with darkness that Gen. Sevens (or Stevenson) of Virginia, who was at our right wing, in wheeling around to the left for the purpose of attacking the left wing of the enemy, mistook our own men for the enemy and made a deadly fire upon that part of our army which was under the 4

immediate command of General Green. This circumstance so discomforted and disordered our forces that we were compelled to retire and leave the enemy, who were forming with a superior force upon the hill beyond the town. The same day we marched back to Valley Forge, where we remained without any more fighting until we disbanded. Note: This Revolutionary War account of the battle was obtained from the National Archives by Judge Paul W. Cress of Perry, Oklahoma. This copy was provided by Col. Joseph S. Stewart, (deceased) of Alexandria, Virginia.... I obtained it from Mr. Edgar A. Cress in 1989... d. 7 Jan 1988 in Rochester, NY) He and Kate are buried in the White Haven Cemetery in Rochester, Monroe Co. NY. Great Uncle Dan was the son of Charles Compton Fraysier and Adna Melvina Kilgore. He was a man of considerable wealth gained from many years as a building contractor and property manager. He moved north from Virginia to Rochester prior to World War II and enjoyed the opportunities of a booming economy centered around the growth spurred by Eastman Kodak Company. Daniel eventually owned several office buildings in Rochester and benefited from other wise investments. His sprawling home in fashionable Brighton was a wonder to a small boy from the Cockerham farm in the Appalachian mountains. Dan and Kates annual visits to North Carolina on their way to Florida for the winter were eagerly anticipated for the chance to sit in an always new Cadillac. The story has been told that Dan and a business partner owned a seaplane which they used for fishing in the nearby lakes of the Canadian wilderness to the north of Rochester. They would simply land, open the canopy, and cast from their comfortable seats and then move on to their next destination. 1. "Damascus sits astride the trail near the Virginia-Tennessee line; the route goes right down Laurel Avenue, the main street, past stores, garages, and service stations. [Georgia's house was situated at the eastern end of this street.] There was already a small community here in 1821 when Henry Mock established a grist mill on the creek, giving the town its first name: Mock's Mill. Married three times, the father of 30, doughty Henry lived well into his nineties. In 1886 Brig. Gen. John D. Imboden, who had served as one of Robert E. Lee's chief lieutenants, bought most of the town from Henry and changed the name to Damascus. 'The presence of these mountains,' he wrote, 'with their vast stores of iron ore, manganese and timber, their splendid water supply, the proximity of coal fields, led to the selection of this spot as the very best in the United States for a modern "Damascus", destined to become as famous, we believe, as its ancient namesake in Asia as a steel producing city'. It turned out that practically the only iron in Iron Mountain was in its name, and General Imboden's prophecy failed. But the town is near the border of the new Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, encompassing Virginia's highest mountain, and a burgeoning tourist industry may yet give Damascus the prosperity it missed." The American Cyanamide dye plant supported three generations of Parkers before it closed about 1980. The Lincoln Industries furniture plant had gone long before and the Norfolk and Western Railroad into North Carolina had been removed about 1970. The town remains clean but lean in 1994... Note: See FARRIS family on next page. Descendants of WILLIAM FARIS of Virginia William Faris, origin unknown , d. <1754 m. wife presently unknown 1. Edward Faris b. probably in Augusta County, Virginia (now Rockbridge) near Lexington, Virginia. According to great x 4 grandson Douglas Faris of Hagerstown, Maryland in 1998: Edward "moved to Seven Mile Ford on the Holston River about 1770-72 from old Augusta County, Virginia. He was a pioneer in southwest Virginia, fighting in the French and Indian War, and was a sergeant in the Revolutionary War. His land was immediately west of the land grant of General William Campbell, commander of Virginia militia at the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina. His descendants moved westward along the normal migration routes and today live from Virginia to Oregon and California and the plains of Canada." .. Douglas Faris, 1998, great x 4 grandson. 1. Douglas Faris says " Conrad was a large landowner in Smyth County and active in many areas. He was a prominent farmer as were most of the Faris men from the time they arrived in Virginia. Smyth County records indicate that Conrad Faris, a free white male, was shot and killed at a toll gate December 15, 1861, age 58 years and eight months. This shooting may have had some relationship to the activities of the Civil War or may have had some other motive. This info was recorded by his son John Faris (great grandfather of Douglas D. Faris) in the Smyth County Courthouse." 1. Conrad Farris b. 1 May 1803 d. 15 Dec 1861 (had 12 siblings) m. Elizabeth Robinson 16 Nov 1823 (b. 18 Nov 1800) 25
