Unit 5: Animation

Online Greenlight Review (Part 2)

Emma Foster 20/03/2012

These are my initial character designs; I aimed to suggest the pose/ action and emotion of key stages in my storyline. I think they do show the emotions but not in proper animation style so I have developed some further below to make them more simplistic but more exaggerated at the same time, this should help in conveying the emotions even more.

These are the character sketches I have managed to do so far trying to make my designs more rubbery/stretchy. I tried to exaggerate the features of the plants and pots to show the action.

This is my first rough storyboard to get my idea down; it uses my more detailed character designs as it was done before the later ones so Ill now be making another one which is also more detailed and easier to understand.

This assignment will investigate critically the German animator Lotte Reiniger and her work. It focuses on the stylisation of Reinigers paper cut-animations, how it impacted on the perception of her work and how she has influenced animation since her time. Sources that will lead the investigation include Animation: genre and authorship (2002) by Paul Wells which will aid to define the Avant Garde in terms of animation, David Currells Shadow Puppets & Shadow Play (2008) to examine the history of paper-cutting in the art world and how this influenced Reiniger, Christiane Schnfeld and Carmel Finnans Practicing modernity: female creativity in the Weimar Republic (2006) to study how the culture and society of Reinigers time impacted on her work and The enchanted screen: the unknown history of fairy-tale films (2010) by Jack Zipes to delve into Reinigers effect on the art of fairy-tale storytelling. The assignment will begin by defining the key terms animation and stop-motion before moving on to explore the development of Reinigers work and style and its relation to art movements. The impact of Reinigers work on contemporary animation will then be explored before concluding in showing the vital relationship between Reinigers life and her work but also the work that follows her.
