COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH March 25, 2012 Fifth Sunday of Lent

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
TO LOSE IS TO WIN, TO DIE IS TO LIVE Life is full of irony and paradox. What we expect in the normal course of events sometimes does not happen, and sometimes its the opposite and the unexpected that happens. The truth is, life is not totally within human control and programming. God, the author of life, designs it in a way that is different from human perspective. The bible presents many ironies of faith and life. Just like the gospel this weekend that says, Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Again, following these verses is another irony, Whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. These verses refer not only to Jesus impending death and resurrection, but also talks about our own life in following Him. We all have the tendency toward self-preservation. We do everything to keep ourselves and our loved ones secure and safe. This is because we love our life and the lives of those close to us. We dont want to lose our lives and those that we love. This is not bad at all. Life on earth is good, but there is something better that God is offering to us, that is, eternal life. Quantitatively, 80 to 100 years of earthly existence is not comparable to eternity; qualitatively, this imperfect life cannot mirror the perfect happiness with God in heaven. As St. Paul puts it, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9). In God, what we lose is not comparable to what we will gain. HEAVEN IS WORTH DYING FOR.
