Morethan300highschooljuniorsalreadyhavetheirfutureplannedoutandtookthenext stepforwardbyshadowingapersonintheirfield.OnMarch14and21,withtheLoudoun SchoolBusinessPartnership,highschooljuniorsparticipatedinJobforaDaywherethey spentthewholedaywithvariousbusinessesinthecounty. AtInovaLoudounHospitalinLansdowne,morethan75studentshadtheopportunityto workwithinthehospitaloverthetwodays.AccordingtoDonnaFortier,communityaffairs executiveanddirectorofInovasMobileHeathCareCenter,studentsappliedonlinewiththeir firstandsecondchoiceofjobsalongwitharesume. Fortiersaidthejobrequestsrangedfromanesthesiatozoology. Theyusuallydonthaveanyexperience,theycomeinwithnoexperience.Soitskindofnice, anythingtheyseeiskindofinterestingsoyoudontfeelthatmuchpressurelikeIdowhena medicalstudentcomesinlookingforallkindsofaction,JillMcCabe,apediatricdoctor, chairmanofthedepartmentofpediatricsandassistantdirectorofthepediatricsemergency roomatInovaHospitalsaid.Whenajobforadaystudentcomesin,theycametosee anything.Ithinkitgivesthemanintroductiontoseewhatallthedifferentrolesinheathcare sinceeveryoneisworkingtogether. Placingstudentsinthehospitalcanbechallenging,becauseofthehecticschedulethatcan changeminutebyminute.Butaccordingtostaff,itgivesthemanopportunitytoexperience reallifeinahospital. Itgivesthemthechancetoaskquestions.Lotsoftimes,youmaynotknowanybodywho doeswhatyouthinkyouwanttodo.Soitsnicethatitgivesthemexposuretosomeonethey canaskquestionsto,McCabesaid.Shealsomentionedthatwithstudentswhodojobfora day,itslesspressurethanamedicalstudentcomingin.Shefeelsthatitseasiertoexplain herdaytosomeonewhohasneverexperienceditbefore. IvealwayswantedtobeapediatriciansinceIwas5yearsold,becauseIlovelittlekids.I thoughtitwouldbereallyfun.IthinkformyfirstjobIdreallyliketoworkinahospital, maybeintheERorPediatricsICU,Memonsaid.But,Ireallywanttoopenmyownclinic andhavemyownpediatricsbusinessgoing.IfigureditoutwhenIwas5yearsold.Iwas obsessedwithbeingadoctorwhenIwasyounger.Ijustwantedtohelplittlekids.Itsagood experience. AkhtarsaidthatthePediatricEmergencyRoomwasnthisfirstchoice,butitwasstillgiving himaglimpseintoajobhewasinterestedin. Iwassupposedtobeintheregularemergencyroom,buttheyassignedmehere.Imstill prettyexcitedtobehere.Idontknowifthisismyfirstchoice,butIdefinitelythinkthatbeing adoctorisagreatcareerandIwouldenjoyitinthefuture.Ijustlikehelpingpeople,Akhtar said.Iwanteveryonetobehealthy.Alotofmyfamily,especiallymygrandparents,theyve been,hospitalizedacoupletimes,soitsaffectedmepersonally.
