Scientific Concept

1. Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid or gaseous chemical substance to

dissolve in a liquid, solid or gaseous solvent to form a homogenous solution of the solute in the solvent. 2. Ionic solids(or salts) contain positive and negative ions, which are held together by the strong force of attraction between particles with opposite charge. When one of these solids dissolves in water, the ions that form the solid are released into the solution where they become associated with the polar solvent molecules.

Did you know that salt can conduct electricity? How this happen?

Questions

1. What happen when ionic compounds dissolves in water? 2. What ions present in NaCl (salt)? 3. What ions present in water? 4. What is the dissosiation equation for salt in water?

Answers

1. Mixing salt and water does not make electricity. However, it is a very good solvent and can produce many different solution that can conduct electricity. When the salt (NaCl) ionizes in the water meaning the Na+ ions and the Cl+ separates in the water, it creates an electrolyte. The term electrolyte means that the solution of salt and water can conduct electricity. 2. Na+ and Cl3. H and OH-

4. NaCl(s) Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
