nter the envied doors, gates and well-guarded red
velvet ropes leading to the most anticipated par-
ties kicking off the summer season and creating
the scenes (pun intended) that make New York
the most exciting and electrified venue in the world.
Acria, a leading HIV research and education organization
and the nations most recognized authority on the topic of
HIV and aging, hosts this years Unframed with Marga-
ret Russell, Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest and au-
thor/guest curator Michael Cunningham. The event takes
place in a sublime Fifth Avenue penthouse with views to die
for. The works commissioned include pieces by Jeff Koons,
Rineke Dijkstra, Ed Ruscha and Richard Serra, to name
just a few. Watching collectors survey art from the past and
give their perspective, I spot: Kelly Klein, Robert Verdi,
Ariel Foxman and Rachel Herbert. After Acria, I race
downtown to the brand new shop Owen, which is decorated
with 25,000 paper bags on the roof and walls. Owner Phil-
lip Salem explains: The paper bag design was created by
my architect, Jeremy Barbour, after months of collabora-
tive meetings. My vision was to keep the industrial history
of the building with the exposed brick, but to bring it back to
earth with some type of organic, nature vibe. Hanging on the
racks at Owen are the designs of rising fashion stars like Jen
Kao, Patrik Ervell, Kaelen, Timo Weiland and Ostwald
Helgason.
The DJs are designers Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein
(being a DJ is every socials moonlighting gig from Marjorie
Gubelmann, aka DJ Mad Marg, to WWDs David Lipke).
Hanneli Mustaparta and Salem mix with the Leandra Me-
dine (of the insanely popular ManRepeller.com), Yigal Az-
roul and Sam Shipley of Shipley & Halmos. I get a chance
to catch up with Timo who insists I start wearing some of his
line. I'd also like to get my hands on his playlists so I can start
my own DJ career on the side...
The Whitney Art Party is a true not-to-be-missed event
and this years downtown dressed up theme lures throngs
of the most fashionably forward trendsetters. Sponsored by
Theory and Saks Fifth Avenue, the Skylight Studio is packed
with a sea of socialites, martini glasses and impromptu perfor-
mance art pieces. I mingle with Tinsley Mortimer, NYCs
coolest mom Ann Dexter-Jones and enjoy the amazing
performances and DJ Japanster, whose rock-meets-elec-
tronic tunes are a YouTube sensation. Iona Rozeal Brown
performs, as well as Kalup Linzy, who collaborated with
Kremart to produce A Memorial for Taiwanan eye-pop-
ping multimedia performance celebrating the history of Tai-
wan. Hosts of the Whitney party include a whos who of
cool: Alexander Acquavella, James Franco, beautiful sib-
lings Annabelle Dexter-Jones and Charlotte Ronson, Ju-
lianne Moore and Kate Bosworth. The gourmet grub is as
chic as the hosts, supplied by hot spots The Lion and Acme.
AmfARs third annual Inspiration Gala takes place at The
New York Public Library. A celebration of mens style to ben-
efit the Foundations AIDS research programs, Fergie (the
singer, not the Duchess) and Robert Duffy of Marc Jacobs
International are both honored. Orchestrated by event plan-
ning guru Josh Wood, the fashion show is bigger and better
than ever and taking over the entire two block long corridor
of the library. This year, the Olympics and sports influence
on fashion serves as the inspiration. The looks are auctioned
off during the dinner and guests like Debbie Harry, Sean
Patterson and John Demsey bid awaywho doesnt want
to look chic when hitting the Olympic games in London?

A HOT TUB.
Cant get a yacht this summer? Get a table.
La Piscinethe rooftop bar, restaurant and pool at the Htel
Americanois helping busy New Yorkers find a moment of Euro-
pean bliss when they just cant get away from the citys sweltering
heat. You almost feel like you are on holiday in New York, like on
a trip to the South of France, says Carlos Couturier, who owns the
hotel, along with ten others in Mexico, with co-owner Rafael Micha.
The pristine rooftop, which opened simultaneously with the Chelsea
hotel last September, hadnt been able to fully flaunt its potential
until the weather reached warmer temperatures this past spring. But
now that summer is in full CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

swing, artists and A-listers
have been flocking to the
small but chic space for a
drink and a dip.
Just since May, actress Scarlett Johansson has been spotted cel-
ebrating socialite Pippa Cohens birthday with designer Brian At-
wood; Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet busted a move with
fashion-staples Jason Wu and Olivier Theyskens; and models Karlie
Kloss and Arizona Muse helped designer Olivier Rousteing cel-
ebrate the launch of Balmains Facebook and Twitter page. Since
our Sept. 5 opening, weve had everyone from Martha Stewart to
Ewan McGregor, Micha adds.
However, dont think the space is strictly VIP: We have regulars.
When they come we know who they are. I dont like elitism. The
neighborhood is not about that, Couturier, who gave us a tour of
the hotel and its multiple eateries and lounges, explains. It pays to
be a regular, or a guest of the hotel, or call ahead of time.
If you cant get a table right off the bat, a reservation is worth
the wait. Micha and Couturier arent just detailed when it comes to
decorating; theyre fanatical. Furniture from Brazil was handpicked
for the dining area, striped seating was specially ordered from Mas-
sachusetts and big, floppy lounges surrounding the dipping pool
came from Italy. (The watering hole, which is only open to non-
hotel guests after 5 p.m., is guarded by a sign that wittily says Get
A Room.)
The drink list was also heavily thought out, with Latin-influ-
enced cocktails including a margarita, caipirinha and mojito, beers
from Greece and French wine. The menu follows suit, with dishes
that lean towards a Mediterranean palatefeaturing grilled fish and
vegetable disheswith heavy Greek influences. As for Couturier?
Im Mexican with a French passport! he laughs.
While the rooftop closes up shop at 12 a.m. (rather early by New
York standards), as not to disturb the hotel guests, patrons can
head to the hotels basement lounge, El Privado. We dont want it to
be too crowded, explains Couturier of the retro and French-inspired
bar and private event space, so many places in New York are so
crowded, but if youre in the know, come down and have a drink.

You never really know the Christmas season has started until you see a tabloid
photograph of Goldie Hawn, decked out in haute Western gear, strolling the snowy
streets of Aspen the winter playground for the very rich and very famous. But the
Hawnster, a year round resident of the once sleepy silver mining town, can also be
spotted in the summer months when Aspen is just as hopping as it is in high ski sea-
son. And this July, all of the A-List Aspen crowdthink Heidi Klum, CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

few years ago, artist Melinda Hackett fought her neighbors
in court for the right to keep the tree-house she had built in
the backyard of her West Village townhouse.
Having moved from Connecticut not long ago, Hackett had
envisioned the tree-house as a sort of refuge for her daughters,
who were still adjusting to city life. But neighbors who had
deemed the structure unsightly and suspicious called in the
police, hoping to have it taken down. A court battle ensued
and Hackett walked away victoriousnot only was she given
permission to keep her tree-house, but the CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

structure was also granted landmark
status.
The story gathered press mentions
from the local news and since then, it
seems the tree-house may have served
as Hacketts mascot. Like the tree-
house, Hackett is laid-back and wel-
coming, and like the contents of her
paintings, the tree-house has a circu-
lar, spiraling design.
When looking at one of Hacketts
pieces, you cant help but suspect that
youve stumbled upon images from a gi-
ant microscope; when I ask Hackett if
she studied biology, she isnt surprised
by my question, and tells me she hasnt,
though nature plays an undeniable role
in her pieces. Theres always some-
thing people react to in my paintings.
But I dont have a story to tell, the view-
er tells the story, she adds.
Cellular organisms, marine life, coral
and pod forms are what Hackett turns
to for inspiration for her playful and vi-
brant paintings. Its like I have a whole
inventory of organic shapes in my sub-
conscious that I rely on and refer to in
my pieces, she says, noting that her
painting process is fairly intuitive. I
cant preconceive what a painting will
become, it is something that is instinc-
tive, which is what makes it really fun
to me. If the seamless flow of Hacketts
paintings is any indication, her instincts
seem to benefit her for the better. Each
of her pieces introduce viewers to what
appears to be a meticulously construct-
ed world, where shapes and
colors complement and interact
with each other as they would
in nature. In fact, theres a sense
that Hacketts paintings go be-
yond the limits of the canvas, be-
longing to a larger realmone in
constant motion.
From her studio overlook-
ing the infamous tree-house,
Hackett starts by layering drips
of translucent paint over solid
colors. The cluster of solidified
paint drops on the hardwood
floors of her townhouse are
a testament to hours Hackett
spends creating the geometrical
worlds of shapes that she refers
to as swirlies and twisties.
Perhaps Hackett's intuition
comes from her artistic family. A
founding board member of the
International Center for Photog-
top A wAll in hAckett's studio
bottom hAckett with her dog hector on
the steps to the treehouse
raphy, Hacketts mother was a photogra-
pher herself and taught at the ICP. Hack-
etts family is also heavily involved with
the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton.
However, spacial influences seem to be
at the heart of Hackett's artistic disposi-
tion, considering the history behind her
townhouse seems to rival that of Hack-
etts backyard tree-house. She bought the
19th century home from David Byrne of
the Talking Heads in 2005 (and kept his
sticker-coated refrigerator to prove it).
Though Hacketts relaxed and easy going
personality seems in her nature, perhaps
the new-wave ambiance of the houses
former owner is ingrained in its walls.
My suspicions are confirmed when when
Hackett tells me she hides a peace sign in
each of her paintings.

To my (much, much) older sisters wedding, circa 1970s, my mother wore
a sleek lavender Mary McFadden gown and carried a bedazzled Judith Leiber
sleeping cat minaudire. I remember gazing at it longingly, wanting to play with it. At my
(much) older brothers wedding, circa 1980s, she chose a poofy jade Valentino number
adorned with a fanciful Faberg egg-like Leiber bag on a silk cord. I remember
thinking it was kind of cool. To my wedding, circa 1990s, my mother commissioned the palest
of yellow organza Carolina Herrera dress, paired with Ms. Leibers classic golden Art Deco
evening bag. I remember coveting it, hoping it would one day be mine to wear to my own
daughters wedding. How true it is that while some things change, some remain the same.

he lunch crowd at Schillers Liquor
Bar one gray afternoon is sparse
and still while the faint sound of
dub songs plays on the sound sys-
tem. Seated in a discreet corner of
the restaurant, still smelling of the
cigarette she quickly ran outside to
smoke, is Erin Wasson, the super-
model, fashion muse, stylist, jewelry
designer, skater, tattoo aficionado, and now, potentially, a
budding Hollywood movie star.
The 30-year-old Dallas nativewhose pale yet fierce blue
eyes and guttersnipe, tomboyish sex appeal have landed
her modeling and designing gigs with Victorias Secret,
Maybelline and Zadig & Voltaireis just one day away from
flying to Los Angeles for a screening of Abraham Lincoln:
Vampire Hunter, an absurd, hyper-violent take on the great
emancipators fictional battle against the undead.
She admits that she had spent the previous night dancing
at the Boom Boom Room for the CFDA after party, but she
is enjoying a moment of peace before a possible life and
career-altering event (in the form of a nation-wide movie
opening) takes shape. I just dont have a whole lot of that
in me anymore, she claims, referring to the late nights in
New York City. I cannot wait to get on this plane tonight
and get to L.A., because I get two-and-a-half days of being
just a block away from the beach.
Her moment in the sunand in her home in Santa Monica,
complete with a half-pipe, vintage cars and a tree house
will be brief. (By the end of that week, Wasson would be
shipped out to the Middle East, where she and co-stars
Anthony Mackie and Benjamin Walker would screen the
film to over 1,800 sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln, the
first time a major motion picture held a debut screening for
the nations armed forces stationed in the Middle East.) Ill
be living on a boat for about a week in the Middle East,
with all the troops and soldiers, Wasson explains, her sharp
elbows resting comfortably on top of the table as she shows
off a loose-fitting shirt with a simple axiom: Keep it Neil.
Keep it Neil, aka keep it real, she clarifies.
Despite the globetrotting, Wasson has grown accustomed
to this nomadic experience. She admits she is incapable of
staying in one place for two weeks at a time. Im just sort of
conditioned to live that kind of life. I have been living that
life for so longI have not been in any one place for more
than three months in 12 years, she says. However, the op-
portunity to test her stationary skills arrived in early 2011,
as she was relaxing on a beach in Melbourne, Australia.
She received a phone call from producer Jim Lemley and
director Timur Bekmambetov about the role of Vadoma, a
vampire assassin who has it in for Abraham Lincoln.
We were really looking for kind of a crazy, sexy vam-
pire, and somebody who was visually interesting and had
some kind of interesting aura about her, says Lemley, dur-
ing a phone call from his office in Los Angeles. Lemley,
who lives in France, called agents he knew in Paris, most of
them suggesting that he take a look at Wasson. Both he and
Timur liked Wassons look and almost-effortless intensity.
Musician Andrew W.K., an old friend of Wassons, said she
had a vampiric face and dropped her a line. I peeled my-
self off the beach one day and I put myself on tape. Three
days later I was doing a Skype with Timur, she recalls.
One week later Wasson was flown into New Orleans, where
the films production team took one last look at her before
they thrust the new-ish actress (she had a brief cameo in
Sofia Coppolas 2010 indie film Somewhere) into a $69 million
Hollywood film. It was just an instinct thingshe looked
right and had the right attitude, like lets try it, says Lemley.
She was hired on the spot, and had just three weeks to train
with an acting coach to learn the basics. Still, Wasson had
enough confidence and honest-to-goodness smarts to make
up for her lack of professional experience. As Bekmambe-
tov, a Kazakhstan-born director whose command of the
English language is still in its infancy, puts it: Erin is strong
and charming. Boys like it.
I kind of went into it very organically, she says. I said
well, if I did it the first time from a very personal perspec-
tive, and it worked, then moving forward Im just going to
have to create a balance. And that very first day when they
go okay, lets shoot, you walk on set and all of a sudden
youre not you, youre Vadoma, and youre in the 1800s,
and youre telling this goddamn story.
For three months she was marooned in New Orleansa
foreign experience in a foreign cityliving out of the Westin
Hotel in the French Quarter in a 12-by-12 box. When you
get off from work at 4:30 a.m. and youre walking through
the French Quarter and theres a bunch of drunks stumbling
around everywhere, it can be a little disenchanting, she
admits. She would spend her off-hours hanging out with
local artists, running from gallery openings to music shows
and trying to have an experience inside the experience.
Id have these experiences of, like, days where Id walk on
set and were re-enacting the civil war, and then Id go out
and Id be listening to the most bitchin jazz music at night.

fter filming finished, Wasson resumed her bicoastal life, shuttling be-
tween her home in Santa Monica and her East Village apartment. In
Los Angeles, she oversees Low Luv, her jewelry line that shes designed
and managed for five years. My factories are in L.A., so unbeknownst
to most, Im not just rolling around in the sands of California, she says.
The Dallas native was thrust into the modeling world when she was
15 years old, winning the 1997 Fashion!Dallas/Kim Dawson Model
Search. Wasson would go on to work on campaigns for Armani and
Michael Kors, serve as the face of Maybelline and Karl Lagerfelds col-
lection for H&M., all the while cultivating a casual yet sloppy chic style, which she
brought into her styling collaborations with Alexander Wang and cult skate-and-surf
brand RVCA.
After her two-year deal with RVCA ended, she moved on to a partnership with French
clothing line Zadig & Voltaire. Its interesting for me to continue to work with other
people in different brands that have different perspectives, she observes. Youre deal-
ing with different materials, youre dealing with different quality, youre dealing with a
different consumer, youre dealing with a different demographic. All of these things are
wonderful challenges for me.
One such challenge was Santos Party House, a tiny yet raucous night club that aims to
bring back the old school New York nightlife experience, with an open space and a sound
system that was totally righteous. She joined white-jeaned head-banger Andrew W.K.
and backers Lucy Ekstrom and Spencer Sweeney to bring the project to fruition. Shes
also super low-key, which is easy to deal with and to work with on a project that is quite
intense as anyone could, which I think is probably why shes so successful, says W.K.
Wassons role is to help curate the whole experience, but she admits that the experience
has been an education, especially in dealing with large overhead and big expectations
for the space. Its New York City, lets be real. Its like somethings hot one second, and
people dont give a f about it the next, she adds.
As for the city where shes lived for the past 12 years, Wasson has reached a certain
level of tranquility in her otherwise demanding lifestyle. There was a time when I was
just out because its New York, its available, Wasson confesses. Now Im like you know,
I did it, saw it, bought the t-shirt. Im going to sit at home and Im going to clean my
house. I get off on domestication.
Wasson does not foresee herself five years from now, age 35, and still grinding it out
in New York City. Like the clothing lines, fashion campaigns, blockbuster films and the
nightclubs, shes in it not necessarily to win it, but to feel it. I think its, at the very least,
going to be an amazing life experience, says W.K., of her role as Vadoma. I imagine she
is enjoying it for the experience itself, and not just a thing to do to get somewhere else.
The end result is not to become Milla Jovovich 2.0, but rather, to try her hand at yet
another opportunity that presents itself. I just want to always know that theres always
going to be another form of creativity for me to get my hands dirty with, and that's
why I did a movie, she concludes. It wasnt because I was trying to make some huge
proclamation of model turned actress, and I wasnt about to say I was a model turned
designer. If anything, I am a curator. I am simply curating my ideas. And if people like
them, then fing God bless.
Now Im like [...] 'I did it, saw it, bought the
t-shirt. Im going to sit at home and Im going to
clean my house.' I get off on domestication.

H
ow did you get started in real estate?
I started working at the Museum of Modern
Art in special events. A friend of mine
started talking to me about selling real
estate and I got really interested. She was
investing and looking at different properties and I realized, I
love this, I could totally do this!
And now Ive been in real estate for almost twelve years,
and actually used to own my company. I loved having my
own company but joining Sothebys International Realty has
been amazingits probably the only company I would have
joined.
Are you originally from New York?
Yes, I was born and raised in New York. I love New York and
it makes it that much sweeter to be involved in real estate
here. I love the energy and how fast you can get things done
here.
What are your specialties?
My team and I work all throughout Manhattan. I would say
that 90 percent of our business consists of co-ops and condos, but we do have some corporate clients as well.
Is there a particular part of the city you find yourself working in the most?
We work in all the neighborhoods but I notice that I end up staying in familiar areas, which for me are the Upper East Side,
Carnegie Hill, Sutton Place area, 60s, 70s. I also do work on the Upper West Side a lotwe currently have a bunch of deals
there.
How does working at Sothebys International Realty compare to owning your own company?
When I had my own company, it was like my little baby and I loved it. I did everythingthe website, the management, etc.
Sothebys International Realty has been extraordinary in terms of the amount of support they provide. The management is
approachable, hands on and completely supportive. I was a bit leery about joining a big firm since I like to be independent
and I really like keeping it basic, but Sotheby's has exceeded my expectations, and at the end of the day helped me to do what
I love the most: showing and selling real estate.
Do you have any noteworthy listings currently on the market?
We actually just went into contract in a record speed of about eight days on a terrific apartment on Nassau Street in a fan-
tastic architectural landmark right next to the Frank Gehry building. I cant tell you how many people wanted this apartment,
which is so interesting because I put it on the market two years ago when it was a totally
different market.
How do you view the current real estate market?
I think its strong. With interest rates being as low as they are and with larger inventory, as
well as the general sentiment and energy being so much greater than it once was, yes, I
would say its strong. Just a few weeks ago, it was the craziest and busiest that its been for
us in a while.
Where do you see yourself headed in the future?
My motto is to always keep looking ahead and growing but really to always be happy and
truthful to what you dothat's what's important to me and my team. The energy of our pro-
fession is like no other that you will ever encounter.
What makes your team collaborate in unity, or in other words, what makes your team tick?
We were never pulled together from a business perspective. For example, one girl that cur-
rently works for me has two sisters that used to work for me as well. We are all really close
and are friends outside of the office. We really are the essence of a team and all have the
same mindset.as told to Thomas Zafiratos

T
he three Ds: discipline, decency and dignity, de-
clared Frulein Eggar, the headmistress of Grace
Farm, an all-boys boarding school for troubled
youth from grades 5 through 9. These are the
foundation that make Grace Farm a place where
young men become gentlemen. I squiggled in
the wood chair, averting Frulein Eggars steely blue eyes
that were stretched into evil slits by the tightly pulled bun
of grey hair that sat atop her head like a snowball. I imag-
ined Frulein Eggars bun as a packed, icy snowball that
I could grab and hurl at her weirdly generous forehead.
Bulls-eye!
My mother, dressed in a black Chanel tweed suit and
pearls as if going to a funeral, nudged me in the side. I reluc-
tantly looked at Frulein Eggar as she continued her Grace
Farm propaganda. Our students are required to put in four
hours of work detail every day, she continued, like a judge
sentencing a criminal to death row. We pride ourselves on
a tidy campus and the student body rakes leaves, cleans the
lavatories and serves all meals in the dining quarters. At
the word lavatory, my mind started to wander from Grace
Farms militaristic Maine bucolic blah to my concrete stomp-
ing ground on the Upper East Side. I missed my skateboard.
I missed my Sour Patch Kids stash. I could hear each Sour
Patch Kid wailing in despair for my return.
Frulein Eggar made an irritating scratchy throat sound
(gross) and my mother poked me again. So Charles Camp-
bell, Frulein Eggar demanded, how do you see yourself
benefiting and contributing to the community of Grace
Farm? My mother and father, bookending me across from
Frulein Eggars enormous deskwhich appeared to be
from the 18th century and was so anally organized that I
had to clench my fist not to jump on it and break dance
until every item was cracked and crushedglared at me
with annoying anticipation. Um, I started, I, like, actu-
ally dont see myself at Grace Farm at all. Im not really the
country type. I hate going to Southampton, unless its the
summer and I can, like, boogie board. My father lurched
towards me. Charles. That is exactly the attitude that has
gotten you in hot water your whole life.
Truth be told, my parents had trucked the eight hours
to Grace Farm in Hopeville, Maine (population 850; 300
of which were the poor suckers at this school), after my
latest Barclay report card. The student continues to ques-
tion authority, read my French teacher Monsieur Char-
riols comment. I am close to giving up on this pupil,
my science teacher, Mrs. Ridgefield, noted. Of course, the
fact that my art teacher, the awesome Mr. Severs praised
my extraordinary talent at both drawing and painting and
vast knowledge of both modern art and current graffiti art-
ists, went completely unnoticed. Yet despite six Ds and
one F in discipline (I did get an A in art!), Barclay had not
given me the boot. Still, my parents felt it necessary to ruin
my Saturday with a trip to Grace Farm.
I want to be good, I chirped to Frulein Eggar as she
sat with her arms crossed, staring me down. I channeled
my best Little Boy Lost expression. But its just that my
friends always convince me to do things I shouldnt.
He charges without permission, my mother an-
nounced randomly, interrupting my
monologue. He lied and charged
hundreds of dollars to the familys
account at Minnie Alberts Toys.
Get over it Mom, I thought to myself.
After the threat of having me ar-
rested turned out to be a total false
alarm, my mother closed down her dumb Minnie Alberts
Toys charge account.
Well, Frulein Eggar concluded, standing up abruptly,
we are prepared to have Charles Campbell enrolled at
Grace Farm starting Monday.
What the F? I blurted out as I saw my young life flash
like a bad movie before my eyes.
The silence in the room that followed was deafening.
