Dear Ms Schoen, Further information has come to our attention regarding a member of the provisional review committee for the wild horse study that has heightened our concerns about lack of balance on the panel. We wanted to share this additional information with you. It concerns Dr. Paul Krausman, who is a past president of the Wildlife Society. According to the link below, in addition to his professional and official affiliation with the Wildlife Society, has met with both BLM Director Bob Abbey and Congressman Cynthia Loomis, an vocal pro-horse slaughter, anti-wild horse legislator from Wyoming, discussing the growing problem of managing feral horses in the western United States. Meeting with BLM Director: Ryder, Krausman, Hutchins, Bies and Rentz met with BLM Director Bob Abbey at the Department of Interiors Main Building in Washington, DC on June 15, 2011. We were accompanied by our colleagues from the Society for Range Management: Jack Alexander (President), Jess Peterson (Executive VP) and Kelly Fogarty (SRM Legislative Liaison). Our primary purpose was to continue our discussions on the management of feral horses in the American West. We shared our thoughts with Director Abbey on the need to manage this non-native species and its potential impacts on our native wildlife and their ecosystems. Meeting with Congresswoman Lummis: Ryder, Krausman, Hutchins, Alexander, Peterson, Fogarty, Bies and Rentz met with Wyoming Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis and her staff at her offices and at the U.S. Capitol Building on June 14, 2011. Congresswoman Lummis took time out of her busy day (she was on the floor debating a Bill) to meet with us concerning the growing problem of managing feral horses in the western United States.

This report indicates that Dr. Krausman, like Dr. Thain, is not an objective reviewer, but rather an active partisan who has a decided position on this issue. This position is reflected in the (scientifically incorrect) Wildlife Society policy statement on the wild horse issue. The evidence now indicates that both Dr. Krausman and Dr. Thain have taken advocacy positions on this issue, and cannot be expected to deliver an objective review of the program of mass wild horse removals that they have actively defended. At minimum, their perspectives must be balanced by 1) an expert in the latest science regarding the horse as a native, North American species; and 2) an expert, such as Dr. Allen Rutberg, who has studied wild horses and has advocated for reform of the current BLM approach toward more humane and scientific treatment management of the wild horse as a wildlife species.
