Enough is enough
Dear Editor: The California Chamber of Commerce is funding a politically partisan ad attacking Jerry Brown, Democratic candidate for Governor. The Chamber has bought more than one million dollars of television time in this week alone. Some of the money for it came from the Claremont Chamber, which is a member of the California Chamber. The city of Claremont spends taxpayer dollars to pay the Claremont Chamber to promote Claremont businesses (which is what its own members pay it to do anyway), so the Claremont Chamber can afford to help bankroll political ads like these. Either the city should stop paying money to the Chamber, or the citys contract should specify that all of the Chambers moneys from all sources must be spent to promote the citys own businesses, not sent to a statewide partisan lobby like the California Chamber. Ditto no money to the U.S. Chamber. Recent news stories have reported that the U.S. Chamber will spend $144 million this year on lobbying and $50 million on efforts to defeat congressmembers who voted for health insurance reform. Taxpayers money should not support selfserving lobbying and one-sided politicking. When good government advocates have tried to reduce the influence of money in politics by offering public funds to candidates who give up private fund-raising, certain interests have objected that taxpayer funds should not pay for politicking. Yet these same interests want taxpayer funds to enable one-sided politicking, which in this case is usually against the interest of the broader public, because it is usually anti-consumer, anti-employee, anti-small investor and anti-environment. What hypocrites! City council members who vote to fund the Chamber with our tax dollars, while allowing the Chamber to fund the highly partisan state and national Chambers, must be held accountable at their next election, not only for the reasons above, but also because that money could have been used to preserve city services which are instead being cut or to better promote Claremont businesses which generate tax revenue to preserve our services.

Vanishing Healthcare Promises

Dear Editor: Its becoming obvious the Democrats massive government takeover of healthcare is not as it was promoted. We were told if you like your coverage, you can keep it. But since the bill passed, we hear that businesses of all sizes are going to have to cut or cancel healthcare benefits for their employees and retirees. That affects my family directly as a retiree with a company healthcare plan. Its only been a few weeks and the broken promises are being exposed right and left. Whats next? Will I have to suffer through rationed care since I am over 65? Our congressman, David Dreier, was right to oppose the Democrats takeover plan. I support his approach to bipartisan healthcare reform that would bring down costs and make coverage more affordable. I am thankful that Congressman Dreier is continuing to fight for us.

Union effort at Pomona College gets student support
n an effort to create a workers union, dining hall employees at Pomona College have rallied wide-spread support from the students they feed on a daily basis.
Citing low wages, un-guaranteed working hours during the summer months and other grievances, workers believe forming a union will give them a united voice in communicating work-place problems to the college administration. Of the 70 dining hall staff at the college, 63 have signed a petition that was delivered to Pomona College President David Oxtoby in March. The petition calls for the college administration to recognize the employees as a collective bargaining unit when a majority of them have signed Union authorization cards. Nearly 60 percent of Pomona College students have also signed the petition, said student organizer Claire Cahen. The movement began over the summer after workers met with administration officials but were not guaranteed working hours for during the 3 months over the summer, said dining hall staffer Maria Garcia, while speaking at a panel discussion hosted by the Pomona Student Union on Tuesday. We talked to the administration one year ago, said Ms. Garcia, a 10-year employee of Pomona College who earns $10.55 per hour. There was no resolution. We didnt hear anything back from them. And now we are united more than ever before. Rolando Araiza, a cook at Pomona College for the last 5 years earning $9.50 an hour, complained about low wages, high insurance premiums, understaffed shifts and poor communication between the workers and the administration. Mr. Araiza also said employees are intimidated into not reporting injuries after a co-worker, Isabella Sanchez, was fired following an injury sustained on the job. They mistreated her, he said. When she came back to work with restrictions, she was told that she didnt
have a job any more. We can be fired for any reason, and thats not right. People have families to take care of. College officials say they are not opposed to a workers union but do not want to be silenced in the process through a neutrality agreement. We have no objection to a union, said Karen Sisson, Vice President and Treasurer for Pomona College. I want to be clear about that. If the workers decide to organize and form a union, we have no problem with that. But we do not support a neutrality agreement which would require the administration to remain silent on the unionization issue. No dialogue can take place when only one voice is being heard. Workers and students believe a card check system for unionization will protect them from the use of intimidation tactics by the administration that could be employed under the National Labor Relations Board process, which the college advocates. Workers are twice as likely to report intimidation through the NLRB process as through a card check, Ms. Cahan said. And only one in 5 NLRB elections actually result in moving on to the second round of the process towards unionization. Meanwhile, the administration says workers could be coerced into voting for a union against their will under the card check system. We regard them as not a confidential process, Pomona College President David Oxtoby said. The opinions of the workers are not private with that system, and when theyre not private, they are subject to pressure as opposed to going into a ballot box where no one knows how you vote. Roughly 40 student organizers are involved in the effort to support the workers attempt to unionize. Along with research and public outreach, the students have created a website for the cause at workersforjustice.org. In 1999, a similar effort to unionize using the card check system was made by dining hall staff throughout the Claremont Colleges, said Pomona College professor Jerry Irish. The couple is being held at the Claremont Police Department jail pending an arraignment hearing. Before their arrest, they were being sought by the U.S. Marshals Mid-South Fugitive Task Force.

Police arrested Ms. Brage for child endangerment and for providing police with a false name upon initial contact. The Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the children during the womans arrest. *** A man who resisted police during a DUI checkpoint was arrested. Police held the checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the 1500 block of Monte Vista Avenue. Around 7:15 p.m., the man was driving through the checkpoint when he was asked to show his driver license. The man did not have proper identification and was asked to exit the vehicle. When exiting his car, the man threw a methamphetamine pipe into an adjacent field and struggled with police officers who tried to restrain him. He was eventually placed in handcuffs and arrested. Alfanso Sanchez, 39, of Phelan was arrested for resisting police, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license. Thursday, April 8 Claremont police made a high profile arrest involving a couple being sought by U.S. Marshals for several violent crimes against the elderly. At 2:47 a.m., Claremont police officer Kevin Bock was checking license plates at Howard Johnson at 721 S. For the love of coffee

really love coffee. My doctor says I shouldnt drink it and I have watched how my blood pressure goes up after I have had a cup. It isnt just the coffee that I love but it is going to a good cafe and drinking that delicious cup sitting amongst friends and companions. I have even written poems to my coffee passion. This one I wrote when I first tried to cut out coffee completely from my morning routine.
Brisk air and I am electrically alive. I decide to treat myself. I plan to have tea; fruit tea. Ordering the tea I hear myself saying, a latte please with lots of hot milk. Tea is nice. Its smell is reassuring, its flavor, delicate. However, I have chosen the assertiveness of coffee which arrives, a tall glass milky beige, speaking to me in colorcoded comfort. Without conscious movement I sink through the foam into the velvet smell. How could I choose tea when the coffee bean dances to such a pagan beat. I still feel the same pure pleasure each time I order and drink a latte but those occasions occur further apart. I drink plain green Japanese gemaicha (with roasted rice) tea in the mornings. I never sweeten hot drinks. When I travel I look for the perfect coffee bar or cafe and settle down with a local paper or a good book and enjoy the atmosphere even listening in to conversations around me and watching the performances of the locals
with their coffees. At home I have my favorite coffee bar and my favorite group of regulars who share a center table in the early mornings chatting, working LA Times puzzles, and forming bonds that link various unconnected individuals. This activity invigorates the beginnings of my day. Since I rarely buy a coffee at a later time I realize that it isnt really just the coffee but it is the total experience and place that counts. Claremont has some nice places for a decent cup of coffee beyond restaurants. Besides the regulars newer cafes have opened or changed ownership in the past year or so. I have tried them all and am very glad that they are there. The West Village has the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf where the tables are full of people working on their laptops and a few regulars who sit outside and chat. I enjoy their coffee. Le Pain Quotidien offers coffees as well as freshly baked pastries and breads. At the Packing House a new cafe has opened, The Packing House Cafe where they serve Peets coffee. Finally folks in that area can easily pop out for a decent cup of coffee. Harvard Aveue has The Last Drop Cafe which under new ownership has energized the coffee drinkers and
snackers. I see regulars there seated around the umbrella tables after their early morning walks. There is Starbucks with a large patio and familiar blends and offerings. Full of Life offers coffee to those in the north end of the village. One can always get coffee with their bagels and their meals in the various restaurants just as most of the cafes have a variety of pastries and small meals to eat with the coffee. For me Some Crust is the one place where I can have it all, the companionship of my regular gang and a delicious latte made just how I like it best; a large, single shot, non fat latte with lots of foam. Yes, the gang is as important as the coffee to complete the total experience. I love the way the various members float in, pull up chairs and join the activity and then drift away as others arrive. It is a very evolving activity. The talk is good and I can sip away at my coffee being a part of a welcoming and stimulating group. Having made the choice to cut back on the coffee has meant I go there much less often and I miss the experience a great deal. I have tried a cup of tea and chat and it just isnt the same for me. So it is mostly on Fridays that I go and then I can have my Greek chatting opportunity with our local Greek journalist as well. Yes, I can make coffee at home. I have a coffee brand from Trader Joes which is roasted with pinon nuts and is very good. I can even whip up the milk and make my own foam. It tastes good but it is just not the same. If I only have one coffee per week I dont plan to waste it on a home brew, not when a great group of people and a good latte await me in the village.

The facts on transit
Dear Editor: I am disappointed that the Claremont COURIER ran the article, Transit Racism: The Hidden Cost of the Gold Line (April 3, 2010), without checking the facts. The Gold Line extension is not a Metrolink project; it is a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) project. Fares from MTA userswhether they travel by bus or use one of the light rail lines are only part of the funding stream for the Gold Line project. The assertion that the Gold Line will only serve middle-class white people is unfortunate, because it is not true. Stops along the proposed line include cities like Azusa, which is majority Latino and has a median household income of $39,000 (per published reports). The terminus of the route is in Montclair; again, another majority Latino city with a median household income level of $43,000. As an avid user of public transportation myself, primarily Metrolink and local bus/rail lines in downtown Los Angeles, I am very interested in having more options for more public transportation available in our region. The Gold Line extension is an important step in the right direction.

While I more that most, I suppose, appreciate a good lecture on the manifold virtues of our republican form of government as well as recognize the dangers of a government un-tethered to any objective standard, I wonder how it is Mr. Lyons would present an argument that itself is un-tethered to object it extols i.e., our Constitution. In other words, Mr. Lyons appeal is based on the Constitution and yet he utterly ignores the words contained therein. Specially, I would draw Mr. Lyons attention to the Commerce Clause (U.S. Const. art. I, 8, cl. 3). In it, one will see that Congress power [t]o regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, [] is in fact an enumerated power, which was fairly early in the Republic constructed to be the power to regulate; that is, to prescribe the rule by which commerce is to be governed. This power, like all others vested in Congress, is complete in itself, may be exercised to its utmost extent, and acknowledges no limitations, other than are prescribed in the Constitution Gibbons v. Ogden (1824). That the contours of this vector of federal power have waxed and waned over the years cannot be denied. And in fact, one might have thought the court was on verge of scaling it back in 1995 and again in 2000 (I am referring to, of course, U.S. v. Lopez and U.S. v. Morrison, respectively). But not too long ago, the wide scope of this power was re-affirmed when the court ruled that the federal governments position on medical marijuana preempted California Proposition 215 Gonzales v. Raich (2005). Imagine, an activity that in theory was to be completely insular to a state was touched by the Commerce Clause. As I recall, conservative Justice Scalia stated that the power to enact laws enabling effective regulation of interstate commerce can only be exercised in conjunction with congressional regulation of an interstate market, and it extends only to those measures necessary to make the interstate regulation effective. Now if it is within Congress power to keep people living in the State of California and with cancer from using marijuana to counteract the nasty side-effects of the chemo and steroids because such activities, in the aggregate, could affect the wider interstate, marijuana black market, then the effects of the health care industrys practices on the national economy certainly seem to be properly within the federal governments purview. Accordingly, and without resorting to
sectors in which the government has long competed with private enterprise (e.g., correspondent banking), it simply is not reasonable to argue that there is constitutional objection to health care reform. In other words, I am not saying health care reform is good or bad, simply that arguments that it is, on its face, unconstitutional are not valid. The weaknesses of Mr. Lyons argument, however, should no way take away from the fact he has at least consulted the Founders on this point. If I were him, however, I might hold back on attacking the left-wing, secular religion and instead challenge my own assumptions about how government works before I started in with the name calling.

Kristen Lee Fraser, the daughter of Larry and Leslie Fraser of Upland, and Igor A. Lukanin, the son of Nina Lukanin and the late Alexander Lukanin of Ekaterinberg, Russia, have announced their engagement. For 9 years, Ms. Fraser and Mr. Lukanin enjoyed a figure skating career, retiring only recently. They competed together at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and again in 2006 in Torino, Italy. Ms. Fraser, who grew up in Upland, holds a bachelors degree in business marketing and currently serves as the director of figure skating at Floyd Hall in Montclair, New Jersey. Mr. Lukanin, a native of Russia, earned a bachelors degree from the State University of Sport in Moscow, Russia. He works as an ice skating coach and real estate agent. The couple resides in West Orange, New Jersey and will be wed on December 31, 2010 in Montclair, New Jersey.

he Claremont/West End Auxiliary of Childrens Fund will host its annual tour of local homes Saturday through Sunday, April 24 and 25. All proceeds from the event will be donated to benefit the Inland Empires children in need.
Claremonts chapter of the Childrens Fund of San Bernardino County is a non-profit organization which assists the communitys at-risk children, in particular those who have been abused, neglected, orphaned or are living in poverty. The Childrens Fund offers a variety of programs to benefit at-risk kids, including the Daily Referral Program, which specifically caters to children who are in immediate need of food, clothing, shelter, or medical attention. Other programs include the PANDA program, which provides infants with diapers, bottles, and other necessities, and the Childrens Assessment Center, which offers support to young victims of physical
and sexual abuse. One hundred percent of donations from the Childrens Funds tour of houses will go directly to kids in need. The tour, Entertaining in Style, includes an arts and crafts fairfeaturing jewelry, candles, handbags, custom murals, home decorations and specialty foodsin addition to the four open homes. Three of the houses are located in Claremont, while one is in Upland. Each house on the tour is exceptional, historically
and architecturally diverse. The home in Upland is a remodeled Tuscan farmhouse with two kitchens, lavish gardens, and a guest house on the property. Another house with rich historical significance is a restored Claremont Victorian with a wrap-around porch, stone fireplace, and original stained glass windows. The tours other featured homes offer a more modern perspective of Claremont architecture. One of these includes an award-winning kitchen, designed by Hartman-Baldwin, with geometric aesthetics, a Viking stove, table and chairs designed by local craftsman Sam Maloof, and a magnificent canyon view. The other features an array of art its owners have collected over the past 25 years, and is also furnished with items pertaining to their family history. The homes will remain open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for Entertaining in Style can be purchased for $25 each at various locations in Claremont, including the Claremont Heights Postal Center and Claremont Village Treasures. Madeline Winn homemaker, devout Christian, Dodgers fan

Madeline Winn, age 94, died at her Claremont home with her family by her side on April 2, 2010. Born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 29, 1915 to James and Mary Carey, Ms. Winn grew up as one of 8 children whose ties were strong. On December 2, 1939, she married the love of her life, Louis Luke Gilbert Winn and together they raised 5 children. In 1968, when Mr. Winn purchased Pomona Paint and Paper Company, they moved to Claremont. Ms. Winn considered being a wife, mother, grandmother, friend and good Christian to be her greatest calling. Her family noted that she tirelessly committed herself to raising a strong family, keeping a welcoming home, being a true friend and serving as an active Christian. She loved tending to her home and garden, visiting with family and friends, serving her church and rooting for her favorite baseball team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. As an active member of Our Lady of her grandchildren, Brian Troffer and his wife Kanae, Rachelle Troffer, Kevin Troffer, Chris Vatcher and his wife Elena, Garrett Vatcher and his wife Amanda, Stephanie Winn, Tamara Nelson and Jonathan Nelson; and her greatgrandchildren, Zoe Troffer and Cheyenne, Leila and Miles Vatcher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Winn, in 1986; and by her siblings, James, Jack, Bill, Tom, Helen and Katherine. Services were held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on April 8, 2010, followed by interment at Pomona Valley Memorial Park. Visitation and a rosary took place on April 7, 2010 at Todd Memorial Chapel, Pomona.

Ms. Winn is survived by her children, Jeanne Winn, Rosemary Troffer, Jim Winn, Janet Nelson and her husband Lloyd and Maureen Vatcher and her husband Mark; her sister, Rosemary Nolan; A memorial service celebrating the life of Peggy Gambill Sturgis, a longtime Claremont/Upland resident, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 600 N. Garey Ave., Pomona. Ms. Sturgis, a teacher, died at her Upland home, surrounded by family and friends, on April 2, 2010. Age 48, she had been battling cancer for nearly 2 years. Memorial donations may be made to the Orange County High School of the Arts Foundation (OCHSA Foundation), 1010 N. Main St., Santa Ana, CA 92701. Fulbright fellowship allows Pitzer student to go to South America
itzer College senior Solamon Cruz Estin is hoping that his recent selection as a Fulbright Fellowship award winner will open up a world of opportunities.
His first stop will be to Colombia this summer, where Mr. Estin will be taking part in a 10-month project that will involve teaching English and researching the urban lifestyles of the Colombian people. Following his service in the South American country, he hopes to pursue a career in the international scene. I will be an English teaching assistant where Ill
probably work 20 hours a week teaching English directly to most likely high school students, Mr. Estin explained. Ill be leading classroom discussions because my proposal revolves around the discussion of current events. Also, I want to look into the urbanization of the country and find out, for example, what made Colombian farmers relocate to cities. The award was the cause of great celebration for Mr. Estin when he initially found he had won based on a large brown package he received in the mail. According to Mr. Estin, the fellowship represents the culmination of his hard work during his 4 years at Pitzer. When I got the large brown package, I did my victory lap and I ran to Nigel Boyles office, the 21-year-
old recalled. At the same time, my mom was on the phone and I had tears coming out of my eyes. The feeling is overwhelming because Ive wanted to do this since I was a first year student. I was reading the first time of the award letter over and over again because it was so hard to believe I had won it. It was a very emotional experience. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has awarded approximately 294,000 national and international students, scholars and professionals with grants to observe political, economic and cultural institutions, exchange ideas and embark on joint ventures

of importance to the general welfare of the worlds inhabitants. Funding for the program comes from an annual congressional appropriation. The funding for 2009 totaled $234.9 million. Mr. Estin was one of 8 recipients announced as of Friday with more Pitzer College student and alumni winners to be revealed next week. Pitzer has led the nation in Fulbright Fellowships per thousand among U.S. colleges and universities since 2002. Along with his peers, Mr. Estin began the application process for the Fulbright Fellowship last September. Pitzer College offers workshops for students interested in applying for a Fulbright Fellowship that features interaction with Pitzer faculty and feedback from other students. What makes there be so many Pitzer winners is the program, Mr. Estin explained. The amount of support you get in a very arduous process to crank out winning proposals is unique. What Pitzer does remarkably well is host a bi-weekly workshop where we brainstorm about different proposal ideas, were encouraged to write both a teaching and research proposal and there are a lot of peer reviews. I ended up submitting my 18th draft of my personal statement and my 17th draft of my proposal. Professor of Political Studies Nigel Boyle said the number of Fulbright Fellowships among Pitzer students started to surge after 1997. According to Mr. Boyle, hosting Fulbright
workshops is just one of the reasons Pitzer College has experienced growth in fellowships. First, nearly all of our students will go abroad and we tend to send them more to third world countries where they have unique experiences, Mr. Boyle said. Secondly, weve been good about getting students from all across the board to apply, especially underrepresented groups such as science majors, students of color and men. And then we spend a lot of time working with the students on their applications. Mr. Estins participation on the Pitzer College team in the Harvard Model United Nations Conference for the past 4 years fueled his desire to be involved in international affairs. He won the Harvard Model United Nations Best Delegate Award earlier this year. The Pitzer College senior would like to eventually work for a development agency in Washington D.C. and also plans to attend Georgetown University for his graduate studies. Mr. Estin views the Fulbright Fellowship as something that will help him attain his goals. The greatest advantage is that you are plugged into an international network of scholars made up of doctors, lawyers, statesmen and senators, he said. Having that huge network will be beneficial for job opportunities and things that I want to do abroad.

press had only been to one playoff game in 30 years. Before coaching at Cypress, Coach Fenton also coached at Foothill High School in Nevada and River Valley High School in Arizona. His experience in coaching spans 25 years with 14 years as head coach. Mr. Wishek said it was a combination of Coach Fentons success and values that led to his hire at Webb. More importantly then his stellar coaching resume is his amazing character, Mr. Wishek pointed out. His philosophies and goals match so well with the mission of Webb that once conversations started between us, it was quickly apparent that this was too good of a fit for either of us to pass up. Coach Fenton will also assume assistant athletic director duties while at Webb.
He is the 3rd football coach in the last 5 years for the school after former Webb coach Robbie von Pertz announced his resignation earlier this year due to medical reasons. Under Coach von Pertz, the Webb football program saw a resurgence from a last place team in the Prep League to a playoff contender. Football isnt the only thing Coach Fenton looks forward to during his Webb tenure. He also anticipates working in an atmosphere that encourages academic excellence and character. Im excited about having the opportunity to work in an environment where you really have uncommon kids, he said. The Webb students have exceptional achievement in the classroom and exhibit character in their day-to-day lives. Im looking forward to it.

We need more transit options, not fewer

group of college students calling themselves Claremont for Transit Justice claims that expanding commuter rail lines in southern California forces poor, inner-city minority bus riders to subsidize rail transit for richer, whiter residents of Los Angeles suburbs (Viewpoint, April 3). Specifically, the group opposes the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Gold Line rail extension from Sierra Madre to Azusa, scheduled to break ground in June. Among other things, they point to a proposed rate hike in July as evidence. Their premise is misleading or even false, and simply is not supported by the facts. Their claim that bus passengers are being forced [by the rate hike] to pay more to travel in order to subsidize the Gold Line rail extension is simply incorrect. The Gold Line extension to Azusa will be the first rail project funded by Measure R revenues. Passed in 2008 by a 67 percent yes vote countywide (72 percent in downtown Los Angeles), Measure R increased LA Countys sales tax rate from 8.25 percent to 8.75 percent; therefore, every resident of LA County is paying for this extension, regardless of race, city of residence or income. In addition to rail, revenues from Measure R are funding a wide variety of public transportation projects, including bus
line improvements such as the new Orange Line busway in the San Fernando Valley. The facts also do not support the assertion that the rail line will benefit richer, whiter residents of Los Angeles suburbs. The population of the city of Los Angeles is 46 percent Hispanic and 32 percent white, with a per capita income of just over $28,000. Azusas population is 64 percent Hispanic and 24 percent white, and its per capita income is just under $18,000. MTA riders in the inner city already have the option of riding MTA buses, trains, or both; their MTA passes are accepted on both. Currently, Azusa residents have no rail option; if they have no car, buses are their only mass transit option. The Gold Line extension will correct this imbalance. The claim that the MTA prioritizes rail expansion at the expense of bus service also does not withstand close scrutiny. The MTA operates more than 17 times as many buses (2,600) as rail cars (150); it operates nearly 50 times as many bus routes (nearly 200) as rail lines (four); and MTA buses carry four times as many passengers per weekday (1.1 million) as MTA trains do (275,000). In addition, for FY 2010, the MTA will spend more than four times as much money ($1.35 billion) on bus operations than it will on rail line construction ($313

million). Put another way, bus operations will consume more than a third of the MTAs $3.8 billion budget for FY 2010; rail line construction, only 8 percent. In addition, Claremont for Transit Justice uses Metrolink statistics in an attempt to support its argument. But Metrolink does not operate the Gold Line, or any other light-rail lines; the MTA does. Metrolink operates regional commuter rail service throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Therefore, Metrolink stats have no bearing on this discussion, and certainly cannot be used in support of Claremont for Transit Justices argument. But even if they did, the San Bernardino Line that serves Claremont also includes stops in Rialto, Fontana, Colton, Pomona, Baldwin Park, El Monte and at Cal State LA primarily working-class communities with large minority populations. Seventy percent of San Bernardino Line riders are minorities. The group also ignores the economic benefits of extending the Gold Line to Azusa. According to the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, construction of the extension will generate
nearly $1 billion in business revenues and $40 million in tax revenues, and create nearly 7,000 jobs in a region struggling with a 12.3 percent unemployment rate. The questions of how much transit fares should be, how far MTA should extend its geographic reach, and whether Claremont needs a second commuter rail line, are certainly worth closer examination. However, denying the primarily Hispanic, working-class residents of Azusa access to commuter rail transit similar to that currently available to inner-city Los Angeles residents of the same racial and socioeconomic class strikes me as arbitrary and unfair, and smacks of regional bias. Suggesting that our only choice is bus or rail, as Claremont for Transit Justice does, presents a false dilemma; all transit riders need both options, and more. Not only that, southern California needs more mass transit to reduce traffic congestion, smog, and greenhouse gases, but that's a topic for another day. I support the Foothill Extension because it will bring more transit options to more residents of the San Gabriel Valley, and it will bring much-needed jobs and revenues.
