Professional Development Program

NYSSLS Grade 6-8

Sequence Planning Meeting Series
This three day workshop will focus on creating a regional model for a science sequence for grades 6-8 for the
NYS Science Learning Standards. New standards were adopted on December 12, 2016 and will come into
effect in July, 2017. In the current standards (1999-2017) each school district has chosen what units to teach
at each grade level.
Our goal in this series is to work on developing a sequence of content for the 6-8 grade band that most
districts on Long Island can agree to follow. It is important for districts to ensure that they are not omitting or
repeating content and to adequately prepare students for their high school level courses. A regional
sequence would also help to support students who may change districts and allow for seamless transition
when transferring to a local district.
Districts are requested to bring one teacher per middle school and their science administrator to the
meetings. It is important that the same people attend each session so that we can continue to move
forward.
To reduce the cost of offering this three day session, participants are asked to provide their own lunch.
Coffee and snacks will be provided.
