Years ago, I was en route to
west Michigan for vacation. It’s a
16-hour drive from Boston, so we
stopped overnight in a small town
just over the Michigan/Ontario
border.
I was tired of driving and didn’t
know my way around, so for din-
ner, we decided to order pizza and
have it delivered to our hotel room.
After we ordered the pizza, the
order taker asked if we wanted pop
with our order.
“Good job up-selling,” I thought
and I asked if they had Vernor’s
which I love and which is not avail-
able in the northeast. They didn’t,
but the young man on the phone
offered to stop at a convenience
store on the way and get some for
me.
Wow.
All these years later, I can’t
remember what the name of the
town was, but I remember the
name of the pizza chain. I don’t
remember what the pizza cost, but
I remember that I gave a big tip.
I don’t remember how much they
charged me to bring the Vernor’s,
but I remember how cool it was
to have it delivered. And in all the
years since, I’ve chosen that compa-
ny over other options because the

Ramsdell Theatre this winter. Rick
Plummer and John Bell have vol-
unteered their time for labor and
are asking for volunteers to help
with this project.
As a major cultural asset for our
community, the Ramsdell is impor-
tant for both our community and
your businesses. The stage floor
has many uneven places at the old
dangerous elevators, the old scene
storage recess and the covered
footlights. Rolling scenery is next
to impossible and dancing is dan-
gerous. The plan is to remove the
old elevators, remove all uneven
flooring, remove the old dangerous
stairs to the sub stage, and install
new joists, subfloor and new 1” x 4”

ing as well as installing a circular
stair to the sub stage area.
The first phase will involve
demolition and removal of the
elevators, damaged flooring and the
old stairs. Volunteers are needed
for this demolition, as well as to
help once reconstruction is started.
Demolition will have to be
scheduled; plans are for the third
week of December or the first week

DNRE increases hatchery production of walleyes

The Department of Natural Resources
and Environment has begun gearing up
to return hatchery production of walleyes
to historic levels.
The DNRE plans to take some 50
million eggs this spring to produce fry
for pond-rearing and direct stocking,
an eight-fold increase over the last two
years.
Since 2006, the DNRE has cut back
on most of its walleye rearing activi-
ties because of the presence of Viral
Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) in the
brood-stock waters. Now, after several
years of testing, a technique has been
found to disinfect walleye eggs and pre-
vent spreading VHS. As a result, the
DNRE will now resume large-scale rear-
ing and stocking of walleyes.
“In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have
cut our walleye fry production,” DNRE
Director Rebecca Humphries said. “But
the specter of bringing VHS into our
hatchery system or transferring VHS to
new waters was just too risky. The eco-
system is constantly changing and our
management practices must change with
it. We are pleased that an effective treat-
ment for walleye eggs against VHS has
been found and we’re ramping up our
production accordingly.”
The DNRE expects it to take two years
to return to full production of walleye fry.
A number of the rearing ponds, which
have been idled for the last several years,
are in need of maintenance before they
can be brought back on line for produc-
tion.
Nonetheless, the DNRE expects to
produce at least 80 percent of the total
capacity for walleye fry in 2011 and be
back to full production in 2012. For more

A lot of Manistee County peo-
ple may have been humming those
words last weekend when we were
hit with the first big snowstorm of
the year.
There really wasn’t a lot we
could do about it. Those of us that
have lived our entire lives in this
part of Northern Lower Michigan
have come to realize over the years
that along with the beauty comes
the other side of Mother Nature in
the winter. Although I am sure the
snowmobile and ski enthusiasts
thought the sight of the white snow
coming down was pure heaven.
It never ceases to amaze me
the crazy things people do when a
snowstorm hits this area. It often
makes you wonder what were they
thinking when they did it.
I overheard someone say that
there wasn’t any way they were
going out in this weather to drive
because it was “just too dangerous
to be on the roads.” However, in
the next sentence they spoke about

plans to curl up on the couch,
watch some football, and order in
pizza.
Huh?
When I heard those words it
made me think you will not go
out to drive in this weather, but
you think nothing of asking some
young kid delivering pizza to go
out there in his beat-up car and
bald tires on those icy roads.
Another thing that amazes me
is with the weather technology at
our disposal today. They actually
predict almost to the hour three
days in advance when a storm
will hit. It is plastered all over
the media, and everyone with the
exception of someone living in a
cave is exposed to it.
But ... let the first snowflakes
start to pile up and everyone has
this surprised look on their faces
like they are saying, “Where did
this come from?”
It sends every tennis shoe
wearing grandma into the car in
the direction for the store because
they can’t survive without getting
an extra quart of milk or loaf of
bread.
To me what is even crazier is
I heard of this one guy who just
“had to run out” to purchase some
cigarettes. It makes you kind of
wonder why you would risk your
life driving in that weather to get
something that is going to kill you
anyway.
What drives me crazy about
the winter season is the number of
layers of clothing we must put on
to go into the outside to stay warm.
It seems the older I get, the thicker
the padding it seems to take to
keep me warm. At this pace, some-
day in the distant future when I hit
70, they will be able to just roll me
out the door because there are so
many layers of clothing surround-
ing me.
Of course, like the proverbial
little kid who should “have went”
before they left for the car trip, it
always seems to happen with the
rest of us when put on all those
layers of clothes. That means tak-
ing it all off again, and then start-
ing all over which usually means
the desire to go outside by that
time has diminished.
I am sure there are others
like me who run into what I call
the “snowplow syndrome.” Last
Sunday when we had the big snow-
storm I was out there shoveling
like crazy for 90 minutes and then
went in, took off all of the winter
gear to hear that familiar roar of
the snowplow going down the
street.
That allows me two options to
the problem. I can either put all
those winter clothes back on and
clear out what the plow threw in,
or let it sit and freeze at the end of
the driveway. If I let it freeze that
means working twice as hard the
following day to try and remove it.
Then there are what I like to
call the “attention seekers.” These
are the people that will pop on a
pair of shorts in a raging blizzard,
and walk around in stores just beg-
ging for someone to remark about
what they are wearing.
If you ask them if they are
cold they say “no, not at all” even
though they are shivering like
crazy when you ask. I swear that
there was one guy in a store last
week that had sandals and no
socks on and his feet were almost
purple. But ... he was cool — liter-
ally.
Usually stormy weather has
everyone looking and begging
for cancellations. Every kid and
teacher wants school called off and
the same can be said for meetings
and other gatherings.
What amazes me is they have
blizzards in big cities where every-
one is urged to stay off the roads.
They can’t make it to work or any-
where else, but 70,000 can make
it to a football stadium where they
will sit outside in blowing snow
and windchills of 10 below zero to
watch a football game.
Kind of makes you think
— doesn’t it?
Something else I find inter-
esting is the way people drive in
extreme snow conditions. They will
either go very fast or so slow that

Keep pets warm and safe during winter months
Looks like winter has found us.
As we strive to keep warm, dry, and
cozy, let’s not forget our pets need
our help to be the same. Our pets
belong indoors with us, but if you
must keep them outdoors, make
sure they have a dry, draft-free shel-
ter. Use straw rather than blankets
as they get wet and freeze. Make
sure they always have fresh, clean
water and good nutritional food.
When they come in, get the built-up
snow off their feet. Make sure the
sidewalk salt you use is pet safe.
As we’re getting our homes ready
for the holidays, let’s keep our pets
safety in mind. Tinsel and wrap-
ping ribbons appear quite attractive
to a playful pet but can be harmful
if swallowed. Keep your breakable
ornaments up high. As guests are
coming or going, make sure your
pet doesn’t escape and all pets
should have a name tag on.
If your pets appear nervous
around a group, they might prefer
to be in a room with a few of their
toys. If you are planning to give a
pet as a gift, please make sure the
recipient is ready, willing and able
to care for it. If your house is going
to be busy, maybe a gift certificate
for a pet would be better. After the
holiday, they can come pick one out.
Sometimes busy holidays are not
the best time to introduce a new pet
to a household.
