Slow traffic: stay to the right

Dear Editor: I received the summer issue of the Claremont City Letter this week. The cover article was about the Claremont Wilderness Park and a bulleted list of 14 park regulations was provided. Yes, the Wilderness Park is well-used, especially on weekends, and thus traffic flow is often a problem. The regulations specify that cyclists and hikers must yield to horses, and cyclists must yield to hikers. However, few people understand what this means. I suggest a simpler rule that, in fact, applies on all other thoroughfares: Slow traffic, stay to the right. If all hikers walked on the right side of the Wilderness trail, cyclists could easily pass around them. Most problems occur when hikersmany wearing iPods making them oblivious of otherscover the whole width of the road so there is no place for cyclists to pass. I suggest a couple of signs on the Wilderness Loop clarifying, Hikers: stay on the right side of the trail. This common-sense rule will help us all enjoy the Wilderness Park and make it a safer place.

Dear Editor: I have just returned from a concert performed by the Pomona First Baptist Church held at the Depot. This was billed as an evening of patriotic songs to honor America. In fact, it turned out to be 15 minutes of patriotic song, and 45 minutes of preaching about the teachings of Jesus, many biblical references and how we are living in a Christian world. The performance was basically an extension of a Sunday church service, not a historical or patriotic program. As a nonChristian, I felt offended for anyone in attendance who didnt agree with the views being thrown to us with every song. If the church truly wanted to honor America, there are many patriotic themes available both musically and in historical reference. I would hope the church would keep its religious teaching in the appropriate spot, and not take advantage of a crowd who came to be entertained.

How much religion is too much at Claremont city events?

laremonts policy on event requests was called into question this week after a complaint alleging the misleading billing of a patriotic concert held at the Claremont Depot last Sunday.

The star-spangled recital, which promised a variety ofmusical tunes reminiscent of the American forefathers, left a sour note for some who felt the CHURCH inordinately Christian tone & STATE was exclusive and its original billing misrepresented. Members of the Community and Human Services Commission who were present at the concert raised the issue because their approval was given with the assurance that the recital would be strictly patriotic in nature with the exception of an occasional reference to God in some of the songs. It puts the commission in a bad light, and I dont think we deserve that, said Commissioner Maury Feingold. The commission asked all the right questions. The debate over the appropriate balance to strike in the private use of public space has long been a sticky issue for municipalities and organizations across America, with representatives attempting to grant the freedoms of the First Amendment while also honoring the Constitutions Establishment Clause. As it stands, the city of Claremonts policy does not restrict the use of public space by religious organizations. In addition, the city did not sponsor the event in any way, and event organizers at Pomona First Baptist paid for the use of the public space. Their usage fell within our policy, said City Manager Tony Ramos. The event was presented to and approved by the city with the understanding that it was a largely secular event. However, given the tenor of the performance, residents have since raised concern over whether or not the city should have stricter policies put into place. The Community and Human Services Commission approved the event on June 6, under the grounds that the event would be patriotic in nature. Given the late timing of the request, event approval was sent directly to the commission instead of the

usual task force or ad hoc committee for review, according to Melissa Vollaro, community and human services manager. Commissioner Bob Miletich was the first to question if the event would strictly consist of patriotic music. In response to his question, the commissioners were told yes. The event coordinator had provided the city with a draft of the program, which was then reviewed by staff. We did verify that it is musical and patriotic in nature, Ms. Vollaro confirmed with the commissioners. Before the final vote, Commissioner Andy Winnick again asked if the event would be presented solely as a patriotic concert. Mr. Winnick stated he had no problem with patriotic music and recognized the presence religion may play in some of those songs. However, it was the possibility of further religious discussion that concerned him. If we got into a discussion from the platform that was much more religious than patriotic in nature, then it would bother me, Mr. Winnick said at the meeting. I just want reassurance that there is no service conducted as a part of this. It is a concert strictly. The commissioners were assured that the concert would not include a service. With that, the commission unanimously approved the concert with one abstention. It sounds like a wonderful idea, Ms. Feingold said that evening. A great way to kick off the Fourth of July week. However, Ms. Feingolds excitement changed just minutes into Sundays program when she saw the Christian Nations flag presented for salute along with the American flag while the Christian Nations song was sung to the tune of the National Anthem. It was a church service written around a patriotic theme, said her husband Jerry Feingold. Peter Torry, Pomona First Baptists executive pastor, said he was conscious of the sentiment, but asserted that nothing in the program was meant to offend or proclaim one religion over another. He says the script in its entirety, lyrics and narration, were handed over to the city with the event application. If the city felt that [excessive religion] was in the script, it certainly would have been taken out, Mr. Torry said. We did

the line. They had a right to rent out a space and do what they did. The patriotic musical is the second event in recent weeks with religious ties sparking debate over the appropriateness of religious events held in public spaces. Controversy was incited last month because of a recommendation for Claremont to co-sponsor an event at El Barrio Park that included a Catholic mass. After giving a positive recommendation to the council regarding the El Barrio celebration, the commission was more careful in lending its approval to the patriotic event led by a religious organization as a result. A similar controversy followed the citys decision to rename its Easter egg hunt to spring celebration. Claremont ready to up ante on smoke-free status

he Claremont City Council Tuesday will discuss adding another layer to its plan to establish a smoke-free city. The discourse takes place at the regular council meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 225 W. Second St. The proposed resolution encouraging a smoke-free environment comes nearly 4 years after CITY Claremont established its first ordinance COUNCIL prohibiting smoking in certain areas of town. Clean Air Claremont and the Los Angeles County Public Health Tobacco Control and Prevention Program (TCPP) are bringing it forward for deliberation. In October 28, the city council banned smoking in city parks. That ordinance was expanded in December 2010 to include the Public Plaza, located off Indian Hill Boulevard and First Street in front of the Laemmle Theater. Staff is recommending that the council adopt the res-

olution to establish Claremont as a smoke-free environment and assign $2000 for signage and marketing. Money will be taken from the General Funds unallocated fund balance. In addition, the council will evaluate adopting an official stance in relation to the controversial Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Committee. The resolution proposes that Claremont oppose the Supreme Court decision, which expanded corporate spending in the campaign process. The Supreme Court ruled that restricting independent contributions was a violation of the First Amendments free speech clause. The resolution is being brought back after several residents came forward during last meetings public comment to urge the council to take a stand. Though not all were in favor of adopting a resolution, Councilmember Sam Pedroza felt the case had enough of a connection

with Claremont to warrant entertaining the idea. Claremont already has an ordinance in place restricting the amount of direct contributions a person running for Claremont City Council may accept. Prior to resolution discussions, the council will conduct its annual review of the citys conformance with the Los Angeles County Congestion Management Program, as well as a review of Claremont McKenna Colleges master plan and related actions. A performance evaluation of City Manager Tony Ramos will be conducted in the councils closed session, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Public comment is welcome before the council adjourns into the private meeting. American Red Cross announces more changes in operations

n a scenario rather like the other shoe dropping, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region announced last Friday that the Claremont facility on Indian Hill Boulevard, known for many years as the chapter house, is being sold, necessitating the relocation of health and safety classes that are normally held in that space.
A press release from the office of Monica Diaz, director of communications, was sent on June 29 announcing the changes. It stated that there will be no change in the way disaster services are provided to the Claremont community. Classes in health and safety, once the sale is complete, will be shifted to the ARC Blood Services facility in Pomona, located at 100 Red Cross Circle at the Cal Poly Pomona campus. This change follows a major reorganization in the fall of 2011 that eliminated the positions of the chapters executive director and health and safety manager, announced as a savings of $90,000 annually. EDUCATION

Claremont COURIER/Saturday, July 7, 2012

Dueling November initiatives vie to fund state education

here is little question that the California education system is in trouble. By 2010, per-student spending at public schools in the state had slipped to 35th in the nation, according to statistics released by the US Census Bureau on June 21.
Education Week painted an even bleaker situation in its 2011 Quality Counts report, rating California 47th in perstudent spending. The former figure is being cited by Governor Jerry Brown and Pasadena-based civil rights attorney Molly Munger as they press for the passage of their respective tax measures, which will both have a place on the November ballot. California public schools, which have the largest class sizes in the nation, have been wracked by budget woes in recent years. The Education Coalition estimates that cuts in state public school spending for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years alone totaled nearly $17 billion. Earlier this summer, lawmakers scrambled to pass a budget that closed a $16 billion shortfall while protecting education. Despite their efforts, the $92 billion budget approved on Wednesday, June 28 reflects $2.4 billion in further cuts to education. Governor Browns initiative California schools stand to lose a lot more if Governor Jerry Browns tax initiativeTemporary Taxes to Fund Education, Guaranteed Local Public Safety Funding fails at the polls. The constitutional amendment would raise the state sales tax by a quarter-cent for 4 years, and increase the income tax on Californians making more than $250,000 for the next 7 years. The governor projects that the tax hikes would raise $8.5 billion in the fiscal year beginning July 1, with 89 percent of education-earmarked proceeds going to K-12 public schools and 11 percent allocated to community colleges. The bills passage would also guarantee funding for public safety services realigned to local governments. If the tax initiative is voted down, a series of $6 billion mid-year cuts built into the budget, most of these affecting education, will be triggered.

The $5.4 billion in possible cuts to K-12 schools and community colleges would include drastic measures like a reduction in the school year from 175 days to 160 for 2 years, bringing California to a tie with Colorado for the shortest school year in the country. Cuts are projected to make for a loss of about $458 per student in kindergarten through high school. Cutting alone really doesn't do it, Governor Brown told reporters on the release of his budget plan. And that's why I'm linking the serious budget reductionsreal increase to austeritywith a plea to the voters: Please increase taxes temporarily on the most affluent and everyone else with a quarter of a cent sales tax. According to a recent Field Poll found California voters divided on Browns initiative, with 52 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed. Supporters, including Claremont Unified School Board member Steven Llanusa, say Governor Brown had little choice but to craft a budget hinging on the passage of a tax initiative to fully fund education. The best way to solve the funding crisis in education is to pass the ballot initiatives Governor Brown is proposing, Mr. Llanusa said. If this tax proposal does not pass, we will not be able to afford what we have in the past. Critics of the initiative say a responsible budget should be able to stand on its own, regardless of the results of the November election. Trigger cuts, they assert, represent unfair coercion. This budget frames Browns tax proposal in November as the following offer: vote for the tax, or the kids get it, Jack Pitney, professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, said in a Wednesday, June 27 article in the Washington Post. The question is whether voters will find that message appealing. A July 5 editorial in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune headlined Our View: A gun to voters heads on ballotput it more bluntly. Maybe the initiative should be written in letters snipped from magazines, like a ransom note. Fork over $8.5 billion, or the kid gets it. Governor Brown defends his tax initiative as fair. Our state budget problem was built up over a decade, and it wont be fixed overnight, he noted in a statement after signing the budget. These temporary increases will

ensure funding for our schools until the economy improves. Molly Mungers proposal Molly Munger, the author of the Our Children, Our Future measure that will challenge Governor Browns initiative, believes support for education should be a collective effort. With this in mind, her initiative would raise taxes on all but the poorest of Californians. She calls for an increase in personal income tax rates on earnings over $7,316, using a sliding scale that would levy an additional 0.4 percent on the lowest earners and an additional 2.2 percent on individuals earning over $2.5 million. The tax would end after 12 years. As Californians, we all should share in the cost of improving our schools and early education programs because we all share in the benefits that better schools and a welleducated workforce will bring to our economy and the quality of life in our state, she has said. She estimates the tax will net $10 billion to $12 billion per year. For the first 4 years of the taxs enactment, 30 percent of revenue would be used to pay down state bond debt. The remaining 70 percent will be used exclusively to fund early childhood education and K-12 public schools. For the following 8 years, 100 percent of tax proceeds will be allocated for school funding. Critics say that Ms. Mungers tax is untimely, asserting it will split support for much-needed education revenue. In an earlier interview with the COURIER, Sue Keith a Claremonter who serves on the Citrus Community College District Board of Trusteessaid she prefers Governor Browns proposal, because Ms. Mungers initiative fails to allocate funds for the beleaguered community college system. Supporters of Our Children, Our Future are likely impressed by the emphasis Ms. Munger placed on accountability when crafting her initiative. Mungers Act limits what schools can spend from these new funds on administration, no more than 1 percent, and insures the new funds cant be used to increase salaries and benefits.

CHS cross country team bonds, helps others during annual relay

ts no secret that members of the Claremont High School cross country team, who log a stunning number of miles each season, are dedicated.

But did you know they sleep on the track? Actually, its just for one night, during the teams annual 24-Hour Relay. This years event, held from Friday, June 29 at 9 a.m. until 9 a.m. the next day, drew 51 students and a spirited group of parent and teacher chaperones. It was a hot day and a long night. Nonetheless, team captains made sure at least one group of students was circling the track and the surrounding area throughout the course of the event. The relay had an Olympics theme, in honor of the games opening in London at the end of the month. The wall in front of the bleachers was decorated with Olympic rings made from painted hula-hoops, and a runner carrying a baton embellished with constructionpaper flames led each relay delegation. When the teens werent running, they relaxed on a sea of blankets and pillows beneath easy-up tents. They came armed with plenty of water, meal supplies like hot dogs and an arsenal of necessities: sunblock, stereos, playing cards, soccer balls, water guns, a Twister mat and, in the case of sophomore Riley Evans, a couple of ukuleles.

Three weeks with Punky

by Jan Wheatcroft

unky lives in London, England. He is a 5-year-old Yorkiepoo. He is small and very cute and attracts much attention from the city folk as he travels from place to place around London. When I visit London I rent a flat from his grandfather. His grandmother, who is my dear friend and traveling companion, Frances, joines me at the flat, and we pal around together for most of my stay.

This time, Punky was part of the equation. His mother owner had just had her first baby and needed a vacation from Punky who is a rather demanding sort of small dog. So the lucky little guy ended up with two old lady grandmothers in a flat with a balcony in a lovely section of the city. London is great for its public transportation. There are busses, both single and double-decker, underground trains (the tube), regular trains, and lots of private taxies. All are very accepting of dogs on leashes. Punkys favorite thing to do in life is to go out...anywhere. He watches us very closely as we dress, knowing that a door will open and planning to be the first one out of that door. It is when our shoes go on that he really goes mad, knowing that departure is imminent. He begins to bark or yap as it gets closer to the door opening. That yap can drive one nuts. His whole body quivers with expectation. Frances takes him on 2 walks a day but he could happily go on 4 or 5 more. He yaps while his leash is being snapped on and then grabs it and shakes it while growling. The door opens and he dashes out and down the stairs clutching the leash in his mouth and growling all the way to the front door of the apartment building. Once out, he barks for joy for a while and then

rushes off down the sidewalk marking any interesting territory where another dog has been before. That's a lot of of area to cover in London. Then he sniffs and sniffs as he waddles along. He rarely pulls as he is not in a hurry. His next great joy is to have a ball thrown for him which he runs after but does not bring back directly to you but drops it nearby and then whines for you to get it and throw it again. Ball throwing can become irritating as he never tires of it nor does he make it easy on his dog walker. When we go out and leave him behind, which we do fairly often, he knows that the door will open and wants to be first in line and so begins his barking. We keep a supply of snackies available and just before we open the door we lob them into his bed and rush out the door. As much as he longs to accompany us, the stomach rules and he rushes to his basket for the treats and we dash out the door thus eliminating the irritating barking. It has worked every time but he is a fast eater of treats and so we have to be well prepared to leave immediately or it won't work. He is a proper little man when we take him places with us. He rushes up and down the tube station stairs, enters elevators and hops on escalators with ease. On busses and trains he hops on laps and sits fairly quietly always alert and quivering slightly with expectancy. He does not bark. As we 3 have been together for almost 3 weeks he

has gotten used to both of us. Frances comes first in his world here, but he often refuses to move if I haven't joined the group and he knows that I am coming. He is generous with his licks and kisses; equally. He hops from chair to chair to greet us happily in the morning. If I get up in the middle of the night he comes out of his bed to check on what is happening and then goes back to his own bed. He often goes to bed earlier than we do and will just get up and go into the bedroom and wait for his basket to be brought in so he can go to sleep. He comes from a healthful, organic and vegetarian home and loves fresh vegetables. His favorites are steamed green beans, broccoli and carrots but he will eat other ones. He gets rice and chicken just for him. Today he is getting ready to return home as I will be leaving the flat for the US and Frances will be going back to her work and can't keep him. So this morning we took our furry little friend with his curls into the pet parlour for his summer trim and nail trimming. Out came a different dog. His curls are gone, his little tufts of hair on his nose are no longer there. His ears appear larger and I could see his eyes clearly. He looked cute but more like a large rat. I know that he will feel much more comfortable as the warm days of summer appear in a London of variable weather but right now I miss that furry little guy. People still stop to fuss over him. One little girl from Saudi Arabia who sat across from us on the underground train leaned over to touch him, it was her first time to touch a dog. She had to ask permission from her mother first. I will miss Punky. He has given a new dimension to my visit to London. He has found a place in my heart. Church and state

Dear Editor: During this week of the Fourth of July, I thought it would be appropriate to review the relationship between our government and religion. The following information is from Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Four myths about separation of church and state: 1. Separation of church and state is not in the Constitution. This would come as a surprise to James Madison, the father of the Constitution and author of the First Amendment. He observed, Strongly guarded is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution of the United Sates. This is the genesis of separation of church and state. 2. The United States was founded to be a Christian nation. Not according to the Founders. In fact, the Constitution contains no references to the Christian religion, Jesus Christ or even God in the body of the document. It is a secular document for a nation with a secular government. (Some people confuse the Constitution with the earlier Declaration of Independence). 3. The American people do not support separation of church and state. Not so. A 2004 poll, for example, found that 78 percent of Americans agreed that maintaining separation of church and state is important. The separation principle is the foundation upon which religious freedom rests. 4. American religious leaders oppose separation of church and state. Not true. Only a narrow segment of ultra-conservative clergy claim a right to preach politics or endorse candidates from the pulpit. Most others realize that church-state separation has permitted faith to flourish in

America. It keeps the government from meddling in internal church affairs and protects the right of all Americans to believe (or not believe) as they see fit.

Honoring graduates
Dear Editor: My son was a 2012 graduate of Claremont High School. This class has a lot to be proud of, and I want to thank the COURIER for your recent coverage of the graduation celebration for Claremont High School, San Antonio High School and also Claremont Adult School. My concern is regarding the recognition of the many colleges our students will be attending. I believe we have outstanding students going on to major universities and colleges, however, other students who will be attending trade schools, going to other countries to study and those entering our military were not recognized. I feel this is unfair to those students who have chosen a not-so-traditional path in their life. These students deserve to have their trade school or their military service recognized as well. I have written to the board of education, and also to Dr. [Brett] OConnor at Claremont High School regarding this lack of recognition for the other students. I do not fault the COURIER for this; it is a concern because these other institutions were not included in the Claremont High School graduation program, so my assumption is that you printed this information from there. Since my communication written to

both the principal and the board of education, they have had an opportunity to correct this by adding it to the marquee, or updating the COURIER as to where other students will be going. However, this did not happen, thus my letter to the newspaper. Why am I concerned? Because I am a parent of a student who will be entering the Marine Corps. My son chose this path because he truly wants to make a difference in this world. He has had a very good education, has done very well, yet his choice of going into the Marines was not recognized in the graduation program, and now the COURIER. I am not just speaking for my son, I am also speaking for my friends children who are going into the military and trade school programs, or one is going to study in the Netherlands. Please remember, all students have worked to get their diploma, and to be mentioned for their career or academic choice should be done so out of respect for their time at CHS or SAHS. I appreciate your time in reading this and paying respect to all students.

Easiest Vote
Dear Editor: For the upcoming Presidential election the choices are so clear that this should be the easiest vote most of us will ever make. One candidate that tells us we are just one more tax cut to the wealthy away from trickle-down economics working, and wants to continue to provide tax

breaks for the largest corporations who offshore American jobs. The other candidate wants to have all Americans pay their fair share and eliminate loopholes in the tax code that gives billions of dollars to highly profitable corporations. One candidate tells us that teachers, firefighters and police officers arent real jobs, and that we dont need them, that they are a burden to tax payers. The other candidate wants to improve our education and safety, while at the same time helping the economy by hiring more teachers, firefighters and police officers. One candidate tells us that the problem is too much regulation, that we dont need the EPA, or rules for financial institutions, or restrictions on energy, etc. The other candidate wants a sensible approach to oversight, one that allows for growth and innovation while at the same time having basic rules of the road to make the economy fair and protect the American people from corruption and greed. One candidate wants unlimited secret spending on political campaigns by the super wealthy and corporations. The other candidate wants to restrict spending, and would require that groups disclose who donated the money. One candidate wants to eliminate Social Security, unemployment insurance, and Medicare, waffles on increasing the minimum wage, is (at least currently) antiabortion rights and opposes a change in medical insurance that he once advocated in favor of. The other candidate supports all of these issues. One candidate is for the super-wealthy and the largest corporations. The other candidate is for the 99 percent and helping all businesses compete fairly.

Remembering the first day, honoring the last

en years ago, I lucked out. Having just moved back to Claremont and feeling ready to leave my writing/editing position at Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple, I applied for a part-time reporter job at the COURIER. Martin Weinberger, then-owner/publisher, informed me that he had selected someone for the position but suggested since he had not officially informed the candidate, why dont I come in and talk with him.
my life. I do not have the experience of a person very close to me dying and, subsequently, the experience of grieving and healing. Therefore, my closest connections to and almost all of my understanding about death, bereavement and moving forward have been forged through all of you who lost someone and called me. Thank you for all that you have taught me; I know it will serve me very well in time. Besides obituaries, I have been lucky enough to write features for the paper. Claremonters, you know as well as I do that there is no end to the cast of eccentric characters, curious happenings and touching acts of goodwill in town. To learn about and write about such worthwhile people, deeds and activities is to have just about the best job there is. Being able to begin the days work by thinking, That person fascinates me. I think Ill write a story on him/her or Im interested in learning more about that, I think Ill pursue it as a story has been an extraordinary experience. I should have known it was an exercise in futility, but I tried anyway: last week, I began making a list of my favorite people who Ive encountered through the paper. A ridiculous, impossible task. I believe that one reason we are on this earthwhy we have lifeis to authentically know and be known; to touch the lives of others and to recognize, accept and appreciate when others are making a difference in our lives, no matter if this difference is so small its almost imperceptible or if its surprising or even uncomfortable. This is why every person Ive interviewed and written about is meaningful to meeven the one whose

I got the job. I remember my first day well. It was a blazing hot day in September 2002 and, of course, the air conditioning in the old brick building on College Avenue was on the fritz, as it usually was. I was nervous, I was sweaty, I was uncomfortable on so many levels, and then I was given my first assignment: an obituary. Mind you, there was no mention of obituaries in my interview, and I had never written one before nor had I entertained the thought of writing one. I was wholly unprepared and halfway panicked. Now, after a decade and more than 1000 obituaries written or edited, thinking about that very first obituary evokes a strong feeling of fascination in me. I find it marvelous that what was once so terrifying, unfamiliar and, I suppose, even unwanted in that moment became something I am now heartsick to soon stop doing as of July 18, at least as my primary vocation. Working with grieving families and writing obituaries has been so many things: a privilege, a challenge, an inspiration, a constant stream of life lessons. It has been tear-jerking, laughter-inspiring, heart-squeezing and intensely fascinating. There are also some things it wasnt: boring, for example. Nope, never a dull moment; never a dull life. With the passage of years, I have often found myself thinking about the surviving family members who I spoke with during their time of grief, wondering how they have fared since they lost their spouse/parent/child. I think perhaps Ive shared with you before, readers, that I am in a rare position of good fortune in that I have not suffered much loss in

home I fled in tears. Theres always a new knowing and, if we really get to talking and making a connection, theres an exchange that leaves both of us enriched. I place tremendous value on this aspect of my work. I cannot leave the COURIER without making sure my colleagues know how much I love them, admire them and will miss our newsroom conversations both silly and serious. I suppose I could tell them in person, but the page is where Im most comfortable and probably most honest. Kathryn and my front newsroom friends especially, both past and present, thank you. The space you allow for being real, for not being perfect, for being downright ridiculous or awful sometimes, is a gift of profound proportions. To just be ourselves without pretense, to feel equally comfortable with each other in our failures and our successes, to talk about things that typical colleagues do not talk about, I am grateful. I feel slightly self-indulgent for writing this column, maybe even a bit embarrassed and audacious. After all, Im not like syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman who crafted an incredibly moving farewell column after having started writing influential columns before I was born and won a Pulitzer Prize. But the COURIER has meant so much to me, and simply put, I wanted all of you to know that. As for why I am leaving the paper, I will be joining the staff of Pitzer College full-time after 6 months of working with the institution in a freelance/consultant capacity. The position draws upon my strengths and passions, and Im excited to bolster my connection with and service to the school that I have loved for so long and with which I have numerous ties. I celebrate that this job change means a geographic shift of less than a mile, allowing me to stay rooted in the Claremont community. Thank you so much for working with me, enlightening me in so many ways and allowing me to be safely vulnerable in these pages; thank you for reading my writing and taking the time and heart to send your feedback when you were touched. Thanks, COURIER, for 10 extremely enriching, wonderful, slightly madcap years.

Claremont throws a great party for the Fourth of July

he savory smells of BBQ filled the summer air Wednesday afternoon along with the sights of streamers, banners and patriotic regalia spread along Indian Hill Boulevard and Tenth Street. Groups of eager youngsters decked out in red, white and blueaccompanied by parents equally enthusiastic about the days eventsgathered en masse for the start of Claremonts staple Fourth of July Parade.

Maintaining Claremonts annual tradition, the city parade began with a brigade of the young, and young at heart. The pride was palpable in the crowds spirit, star-spangled outfits and decorated vehicles. The band of festive big wheels, bikes, wagons and scooters drew throngs of people toward the Fourth of July Parade route as it has in years past. Its very symbolic, said Bob Banwart, a 30-year Claremont resident, of the parades opener. Mr. Banwart was thrilled to be able to share the significance of the Claremont tradition with his grandchildren. Its a wonderful time to reflect on how great our country is, and just enjoy time with family, he said. Mr. Banwart took the opportunity to make the experience a lesson in family ties and patriotism, helping grandson Gabriel Mabee, 8, and Grace, 6, appropriately decorate their bicycles before parade

CHS CROSS COUNTRY continued from the previous page

The boys and girls of the cross country team also engaged in a miniOlympics, vying against one another, class by class. The seniors and sophomores tied for first place in contests like a water balloon toss, a wheelbarrow race and a game that involved 2 students donning an oversized T-shirt, using their free arms for cooperative tasks like tying their shoelaces and dressing a Barbie doll. The relay is a blast, said team captain Allison Spivack, a senior who joined the cross country team as a freshman, but it also serves a practical purpose. Its an important tradition to get the newer kids involved, she said. Incoming freshman Nathan Jones for whom the relay offered the chance to play Super Smash Bros on a Game Cube brought by an enterprising student agreed. He didnt feel like a total stranger, because his older brother Nick Jones, a senior in his second year running cross-country, was there. Nonetheless, Nathan welcomed the opportunity to put names to a few of the new faces hell encounter during his transition from El Roble Intermediate to CHS. It kind of feels like its going to be more challenging, he said. Im going to need to take harder classes, and make new friends as people start going their separate ways. Beyond strengthening the teams connection, the 24-Hour Relay gives the Wolfpack the chance to give back to the community. This year, the student athletes held a food drive concurrent with

night chaperones, so the relay was shortened to a 12-hour daytime event. This year, the older team members pleaded for the return of the relay in its marathon form. We remembered how fun it was, said senior Maureen Murphy, who considers the event the perfect preview to the season. Its a bonding experience. Jimmy Baeskens, now a senior, said the relay was an invaluable icebreaker when he was a freshman, new not only to CHS but to the district as a whole. It was a great opportunity to meet new people, he said. These are friends Ive kept all of these years. I dont see the camaraderie we have in any other sport. Theres something about in cross country that helps forge strong relationships, agrees Allison. Perhaps its the extreme exertion required, which she says attracts friendly, competitive and determined participants. Its really challenging. You get to work on it personally, but its also a team sport, she said. These are some of my best friends, and I didnt know them before this. It really is a family.

years old. She began her ministry at OLA as a young adult volunteer from 1974-78, after a brief time with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange from 1961-64. She continued as a third grade religious education teacher, followed by a short stint in the seventh grade in the wake of several teachers who had quit in exasperation. Ms. Raef survived that year, but felt called to instruct a younger group, settling on the first grade where she served for 10 years. I fell in love, she said of teaching the younder students. Ms. Raef joined the OLA staff as the elementary education coordinator in 1989, but continued to volunteer in the first grade. Such intimate involvement with the religious education and spiritual formation of others has proven to be a life-long lesson in faith for Ms. Raef. She especially values the opportunity to listen to the stories of faith from parents and to become an instrument of growth for them. The First Communion season is the highlight of her year when all the hard work of preparation blossoms into joyous celebration. She has cherished those opportunities to go back into the

Hundreds of people gather on the lawn to gaze at the fireworks display Wednesday night at Strehle Track at Pomona College. The fireworks show lasted 20 minutes, with background music by artists like Lee Greenwood with Proud to Be An American, Neil Diamonds Coming to America, and Katy Perrys Firework. A CLAREMONT FOURTH continued from the previous page

day. The result had Grace donning a helmet embellished with red, white and blue flowers while Gabriel opted for patriotic pinwheels and ribbons. The bow is my favorite, said Gabriel, pointing out the stars and stripes detailing the fixture on the front of his bike. Beyond the fun decorating with his grandpa, Gabriel was excited to celebrate Americas freedom, something he does not take for granted. Freedom means not being forced to be drafted when you are 10 years old like in other countries, he said, referring to the 20 or more countries across the world where children are reportedly forced into combat at a young age. Children of the Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) were eager to reflect on that American freedom in their own way aboard their living float. The Neal Coble flips burgers for the Kiwanis Club on float was trimmed with plants and handmade signs put Wednesday night at Pomona College. The Kiwanis together by the children promoting solar power and susClub offered hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs tainable energy. The schoolkids werent afraid to work and nachos during the Fourth of July event. hard to promote eco-friendly living, putting in long

hours to adorn the float with the appropriate decor. It took us forever, said Lucy Chinn, 10, who attends Sycamore Elementary. Her little brother, Theo, chimed like one or 2 hours in agreement. For 12-year-old Amber Kaljumagi, the time was well-spent. She likened her experience of building the living floatand her gardening skills acquired from a partner program between CUSD and Sustainable Claremontto Americas first settlers growing their own food. We are celebrating our freedom by growing our own corn and plants, Amber said. We are being brought back to the old days. Several floats back, 12-year old Elissa Perez and her mother, Yvette Perez, got crafty in their own way, wearing matching hair pieces adorned with butterflies. The Perez family floated down the parade route promoting Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, where Elissas mother works as the donor records specialist. Every year, the Perezes enjoy participating in Fourth of July festivities as a family unit. To Elissa, Independence Day is about loved ones. Its fun to be together and celebrate being patriotic, Elissa said, though she admitted to some nerves at her first time as a parade participant. Parade veterans Ethan Landa, 12, and sister Lauren, 9, played it cool at the start of the parade lineup, with more than a decades worth of parade experience under their belts. The Landa family also participates in the parade as a family every year. Though in years past the Landas mainly stuck to bicycling down the parade route, this year the kids went all out with an extravagantly-designed wagon, stars and stripes included. Poles and streamers were part of Ethans design stacked on top of the familys little red wagon. It gave us more of a canvas to work with, explained Ethan of his move from bike to wagon. Lauren, the family artist, added her touch with a painted sign. The Landa parents have enjoyed watching and encouraging their 2 childrens participation in Claremonts Independence Day Parade and its homage to American history. We feel like our kids have really grown [with the parade], said Ethan and Laurens mother, Laura Landa. The celebration is unique and truly speaks to what is so great about the Claremont community.
