About this audiobook

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Editor's Note

Fire is catching…

Equipped with only a bow and a heart of gold, Katniss Everdeen caught cultural fire, igniting the rebel in us all. A brilliant, action-packed social commentary on media manipulation that defines the dystopian YA genre.

I love the dystopian universe in this book. There was just far too much love story for this to be a 5 for me. However, it's rather impressive that something with this much romance could make it as high as 4 in my mind. The amount and particular style (pining, I freakin' hate pining) in this book is usually just cause for me to give up on a book entirely, and I never even considered stopping this one.

An alright novel. This sort of format is a dime-a-dozen these days, but there are far worse versions out there one could read. A fun read if this is your go to genre, but lacking in terms of depth.

The Hunger games was written for pre-teens, ages 9-12. Having a son who is that age and reads widely and has a large vocabulary, I seriously doubt that he would have understood the underlying implications of this book. That being said, as an adult reader I found the book a rather well-written, plain and simple, post apocalyptic tale. I'm glad I read it, will I want to read the other 2 in the series? Not at this time. Would I reccommend this book? Yes, for a quick, easy read.

This book is action packed, I found it almost impossible to put it down, and I can't wait to get my hands on the second book of the trilogy. This is one book I can say with confidence I would not hesitate for a second to recommend to somebody else.

I found this to be a fantastic dystopian book for teens and adults alike. Katniss and Peeta are thrust into the Hunger Games, a competition of 24 teens from 12 districts fighting to the death to remind their districts the price they paid for war and violence. This novel and series, while frequently banned and challenged fast became a cult classic. This is a very dystopian society withing the novels, but traces of the truth can be found within its pages and this leads to some excellent discussions withing the classroom. One extension activity would be to have the students discuss how the salute from district 12 is quickly becoming a symbol of revolution in countries that are currently being ravaged by war and injustice. Another activity could be to create an alternate, opposite reality to Panem and discuss the pros and cons of a completely passive society.

It's fast-paced, keeps your attention, and leaves me interested enough in the characters to want to find out what happens to them now that they've ticked off the ruling members of the Capitol. Definitely creepy what happens to the contestants who were killed off.

I read this book for a literature class. I found it to be much more than I had expected. There is so much symbolism and truth in this book. Katniss’s relationship with Gale is one that was based on true friendship. Katniss was not a trusting person, and it took a while before she felt she could trust Gale. Once this trust was established, she was able to be herself around him, and believed they worked better as a team. When she was in the forest with Gale, she smiled, and this was not something that Katniss did often. She did not seem to be romantically inclined toward him, even thinking the idea of running away together was preposterous, yet while she was in the arena, she thought of him often, and even wished he were with her. She questioned whether or not there might be more to their relationship, than she had previously thought.

I found it quite difficult to decide, whether I wanted Gale or Peeta to end up with Katniss, because they both had strong feelings for her, and would do anything for her, including die.

This novel portrays a corrupt government, with inequality, and the entertainment factor is disturbing. You were able to see this through this, to the novel that it is. You saw the greed and corruption in this story, and how it brings out the obsession in our culture for reality TV, and how something as horrific as the hunger games, is televised for all to watch; the gorier the better.

I found that the romantic tension, helped me read further, because without it there would be no kind emotions in this book at all.

The book tells us about a new world risen from the death of the old where the capital reign over and as their sport a cruel game comes where the children of their people are fighting for death . A story with a powerful idea, and hence a strong theme.

I was very disappointed in The Hunger Games. The writing was simplistic and just awful. The plot was decent and promising but was fairly anti-climatic. I understand this book is targeted for younger readers, but it could of been a lot better and I feel that it had a lot of potential but never went for it. The ending redeems it a little, but not much. I will finish the series, this book did manage to make me interested to see what happens but if the other two books are as plain as this one I don't see them getting higher ratings.

This book certainly lived up to all the hype!

I wasn't too keen on reading this book as it under the "dystopia" genre, and I generally am usually not impressed with those kind of books but The Hunger Games was completely different to what I was expecting.

The story is so absorbing it is literally impossible to put the book down, the only things I could possibly grumble about were the use of the mutt mutations of all the fallen tributes. !?! too far-fetched for my liking, and also Kat's complete unawareness and denial of Peeta's feelings towards her. That annoyed me.

Regardless, the description and story was AMAZING - and all the different characters were really developed and engaging. I can not wait to read the rest of the series!

Right, now to watch the movie adaptation!

I really liked this book when I read it. Found it very thrilling. Then I saw the Japanese movie Battle Royale. I hope Suzanne Collins is paying the Japanese big fat royalties. If not, they should sue.

I think this book inspires young adult readers to be fearless no matter how much it cost for your life. This is a book where fear is not exceptional.

I read this book because of the strong recommendation of my daughter and my son, both of whom raved about "Hunger Games," despite their being too old for young-adult fiction. A combination of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", "1984", "Lord of the Flies", and the CBS television show "Survivor"--with some Harry Potter-like creatures thrown in for good measure--"Hunger Games" is the story of a futuristic dystopia in which two dozen young teens are selected by a lottery each year to fight one another to death over a period of several weeks on a nationally broadcast television show. It's not great literature, but it is a surprisingly gripping read.

There is no denying the fact that Suzanne Collins is a gifted writer and Hunger games is a well written book. But somehow, the whole premise of this trilogy did not work for me. Hunger Games as an instrument of oppression of the masses seemed so flimsy that I could never take the travails of the tributes seriously enough. 'This can never come to pass' was the constant background chatter in my mind and I was unable to suspend believability of the plot long enough.
I AM going to read the entire trilogy though, because my teenaged daughter is totally enthralled by the book and wants me to read it too :)

I never planned on reading the book, it didn't entice me to want to read it. And now i can't believe how much I love it, I didn't know I would enjoy reading it so much. A very interesting story on the dystopian concept. To be honest I decided to read the book because I wanted to watch the movie but I couldn't bring myself to watch it before reading the book, I will at least read the second book first if not the third before watching it. Hope i'm not disappointed, the writing flowed and it never slows, it was exciting and intense. On to the next now.
