ME 4550 Test #1 Preparation Dr. Nader Jalili

SET #1
1. A single horizontal force P of magnitude 150 lb is applied to end D of lever ABD. If the portion AB of the lever has a diameter of 1.2 in., determine: a. Normal and shear stresses on an element located at point H on top of the rod (having sides parallel to the x and z axes). b. The principal stresses at this point (H).

2. For the specimen shown, determine a. The radius r of the fillets for which the same maximum stress occurs at the hole A and at the fillets. b. The allowable load P if the allowable stress is 150 MPa.

Stress concentration factor for flat bars under axial loading (note the nominal stress must be computed across the narrowest section).

3. For the uniform beam and loading shown, determine the reaction at each support. (Hint: Use Castiglianos theorem for the deflection of any of the supports (A, B or C) and set it to zero in order to obtain an extra equation for this over-constrained problem).

1. If the diameter of rod ABD is 1.25 in., determine: a. Normal and shear stresses on an element located at point H on top of the rod (having sides parallel to the x and z axes). b. The principal stresses at this point (H).

2. The allowable stress for the specimen shown in figure is 15,000 psi. Determine a. The allowable value of the centric load P. b. The percent change in the allowable value of P if the raised portions are removed at the ends of the specimen.
