Write a one-page essay/ critical analysis on the use of English as a medium of instruction in the workforce (office, school, agency,

etc.). Include in your paper facts taken from sources. Maria Reylan M. Garcia The use of English in Philippine Healthcare is inevitable. With the influx of international patients since 2007 and the resulting 8.0% increase in this services subsector (US Medical Tourism Association, 2011), prove that the Philippines is now becoming a destination for medical tourism. For whatever reason, whether it be the sky-rocketing cost of international health care or that the world is beginning to see the skill of Filipino health care workers, it all boils down to the apparent reality that Filipino doctors, nurses and other health professionals will be dealing with more and more foreign patients. The use of English is more than just inevitable, it is already as omnipresent as the Big Joes and Uncle Sams islandhopping in our archipelago. To be able to communicate effectively and deliver the quality care necessary, healthcare givers must be able to exude in correct grammar and fluency in English. The use of the English language has already been dominant in majority of the healthcare routines such as doctor referrals, nurse notes and endorsements and medical reports. The passing of information from one healthcare unit to the next is largely done in English even before the trend of Medical Tourism came into being. However, not much attention was given to details as long as nurses understand the doctors order. But what would possibly happen when the doctor writes in the order sheet, Gave Furosemide 20 mg IVTT as STAT dose? Since its on the order sheet the nurse would immediately carry it out and give the dose not knowing that gave is the past tense form which means it was already given. Poor patient, for he got 20 mg more than what was intended. The necessity for the use of effective English in the Philippine Healthcare sector is not just a recent issue. It should have been given more attention right before the World Health Organization ranked Philippine Health System as 60th in the world which is not a bad number. The use of effective English in the Philippine Healthcare sector will boost and improve the quality of stay of our foreign patients. But it should not be ignored that the use of effective English too would have saved a lot of errors and undisclosed malpractices such as a 20mg Furosemide overdose.
