An ocean current is like a river in the ocean: water is flowing traveling from place to place. Historically, ocean currents have been very important fo transportation.
(When crossing the ocean in a ship powered by the wind (via sails), being carried by an ocean current (or avoiding a current going the opposite direction) could save a ship more than a week of travel time).
