THE CENSUS 2001 REPORTS: General Population
The total population of the state is 603.48 lakhs. Out of this, 314.44 lakhs (52.10 per cent) are males and 289.04 lakhs (47.90 per cent) are females. Out of the total population, 257.93 lakhs (42.74 percent) are Workers and 345.55 lakhs (57.26 percent) are Non-Workers. Amongst the total work force, 191.03 lakhs (74.06 per cent) are Main Workers and 66.91 lakhs (25.94 per cent) are Marginal Workers.

Population aged 5-14 years


The total population of the persons, aged 5-14 years in the State is 158.84 lakhs. Out of this, 83.23 lakhs (52.39 per cent) are males and 75.61 lakhs (47.61 per cent) are females. Out of the total population, aged 5-14 years, 10.65 lakhs (6.71 per cent) are Workers and 148.19 lakhs (93.29 per cent) are Non-Workers. Amongst the total work force, 3.88 lakhs (36.45 per cent) are Main Workers and 6.77 lakhs (63.55 per cent) are Marginal Workers. The share of workers, aged 5-14 years in the total work force of the State works out to be 4.13 per cent.

Population aged 5-17 years


The total population of persons, aged 5-17 years is 192.81 lakhs. Out of this, 102.05 lakhs (52.93 per cent) are males and 90.76 lakhs (47.07 per cent) are females. Out of the total population, 144.15 lakhs (74.76 per cent) belonged to Rural Areas and 48.66 lakhs (25.24 per cent) to Urban Areas. Of the total population, 10.15 lakhs (5.27 per cent) are Main Workers, 12.15 lakhs (6.3 per cent) Marginal Workers and the remaining 170.51 lakhs (88.43 per cent) are Non-Workers. The share of workers aged 5-17 years in the total workforce of the State works out to be 8.65 per cent. Amongst the Main Workers, 6.72 lakhs (66.17 per cent) are males and 3.43 lakhs (33.83 per cent) are females. Of the total Main Workers, 0.74 lakh (7.26 per cent) were attending educational institutions and 9.42 lakhs (92.74 per cent) were not attending any educational institution.
