Neuburger English 102-102 July 23, 2012 Response Essay The Ways We Lie In the essay by Stephanie Ericsson The Ways We Lie is about the different ways that people lie, the reasons behind why we choose that certain kind of lie, and why we lie in general. After reading this essay one can conclude that we all do some form of lying to the people we love, the friends and family that are close to us, and our peers. Ericsson describes, We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare peoples feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the to the big-guy institutions (par 3). The question is how far are you willing to go to tell a lie, we all tell lies it just comes to the conclusion of how big of lies are you telling and how often. Ericsson states, But there is a world of difference between telling functional lies and living a lie (par 34). When lies are being told it shifts how one feels, meaning trying to look good on both sides, to ourselves and the ones we tell our lies to. Ericsson describes, Our acceptance of lies becomes a cultural cancer that eventually shrouds and reorders reality until moral garbage becomes as invisible to us as water is to a fish (par 34). On can conclude that everyone tells lies, its just up to that person of how big of a lie they are wanting to portray. Ericsson, Stephanie. "The Ways We Lie."
