THE Auditor General is considering a request to investigate the cost of educating schoolchildren from south of the border in Northern Ireland. Over 400 pupils from the Republic cross the border each day to attend schools in the Province
at an estimated cost of 1m a year. Under the current arrangements, the schooling is provided free of charge in what the education minister has described as a more effective and efficient way of running government than ignoring each other. The policy was initially called into question by TUV leader Jim Allister, who has written to the
Auditor General urging him to investigate whether the money should be reimbursed. Mr Allister raised the issue on the floor of the Assembly twice last month when challenging both the finance and education ministers. In response to Mr Allisters question, Finance Minister Sammy Wilson said his investigations to date show that no money has
changed hands. Mr Wilson said: As I have said time and time again, there are occasions when it is a better use of our resources to co-operate and sell services to the Republic and vice versa, but it must be done on the basis that it is not a gift, especially when budgets are under pressure.
