Topic proposal Stem Cell Research A proposal by Justin Parent There are plenty of diseases affecting the world

that are foreign to doctors and scientists such as various cancers that people see everyday. With stem cell technology, we can understand how these cancers develop and how we can counteract them. There are also plenty of risks and sacrifices to this research. However, the controversial nature of stem cell research delays its progress. Never the less, stem cell research can benefit us by understanding these unknown diseases and finding antidotes or even cures. There are 4 methods for stem cell extraction. There are bone marrow stem cells, adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells and umbilical cord stem cells. The most successful type of stem cell is the adult stem cell because it proves to have the highest success rate out of any of the other stem cells. It cures and repairs over 30 types of diseases or injuries, such as Parkinson's disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis etc. (http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/) There are also disputes and religious arguments about the research. The people who are disputing whether or not to use stem cell research refer to embryonic stem cell research. The people against stem cell research call it murder. Religious believers believe that creating cloned embryos and then terminating them is homicidal. (Lori Knowles) I believe that this research will benefit us all in the medical fields and that the information retrieved will change peoples lives for the better. Some sacrifices must be made, but for few to die to save thousands, is a decision most people would make. It is a harsh reality but it's the reality that we live in.
